Takeaways: don't expect you passport to go through until it's convenient for them, don't expect to be able to get member services unless you are free during work hours, don't expect service from member "services."

They literally play EVERYTHING on this station from Classic Rock, Funk, Blues, Hip Hop, and Alternative all entirely commercial free. They rely solely on donations from listeners who have had enough of crappy commercial radio. I have to say the newsroom staff were really great to work with... The editor at the time, Eric San Juan, always treated me well, and I always got paid fairly and on time. Micromedia has seasoned news reporters and editors. I support weekly newspapers since they provide good local content and they hire freelance reporters who are laid off by the bigger papers like the Asbury Park Press "Gannett INC." I have to say Micromedia gets it right!

One of the reasons I love Philly is that it's very active in the literary world. But despite this it's hard to get a feel of who's who when it comes to our local writers. That's why it's great that a free magazine like Philadelphia Stories exists and is widely available throughout many coffee shops, etc. Philadelphia Stories is a quarterly magazine that showcases the fiction and poetry of many writers from our area. Each issue has at least 9 good reads to go through, a local author profile, and some reading suggestions. It also gives writers and artists the chance to readily submit their work. So you might be able to dust off that great American novel idea and send out a chapter. Going to their website also clues you in on some fun literary events that are going on throughout the city. And you can get some insight on some of the books that they put out too. Start reading!

Now that I've been back to being a regular Septa Commuter (as Marlon Brando would say "The Horror")…read moreI've had a good chance to revisit the Metro on a regular basis. and I can honestly say that it's much more worse than Tabloid journalism than I previously thought. it used to at least be amusing when I would see my friends pop up in the question/answer column (especially when they did so under aliases). And it was especially amusing reading through the Yelp review blurbs that would pop up every Thursday. And it had an interesting group of fledgling journalists who used to to keep it a little fresh with locally centered stories on bands, people, and things that you had reason to care about. But today I read a cover story on overcrowding dumpsters on Sansom street and the entire paper stunk just as bad. they have the audacity to run things like a bullshit filled question/answer column by one of the Septa big wigs were he talks about innovations that they have allegedly been working on for a few years now (new ticketing machines,etc) as if they where innovative ideas that they were working quickly on. and the tabloid celebrity sections actually manage to be worse than the usual ones because their much more half assed. And as you might have gathered from this summation is the fact that they don't cover most that's news worthy. It still has somethings that are worth reading through, but unfortunately it's pretty sparse. and that's reason #237 why I usually bring a book with me where ever I go.

They interviewed residents about gay marriage, talked about the recent ruling, BUT NEVER NAMED THE TOWN. It wasn't on purpose; the town had been in the news and it was no secret that they'd allowed gay marriage. Metro isn't any better in other cities, though I heard the NYC edition had a writer from the Daily Show on staff. In most cases, it seems run by recent college grads without any older staffers to show them the ropes, like how to hire a proofreader. (Yeah, I make typos all the time as well. But I don't get paid to write my yelp reviews nor do I claim to be a professional.) I eventually stopped picking it up at all.

Since 2006 they've been trying to open up more Philly venues to short film through their films and others. And they've been doing a good job of it. Together with National Mechanics they have an awesome free short film fest every month called the Solstice Series (coming back in June.) It showcases short comedies and dramas from Philly and beyond. Aegis is also doing pretty hot with their own films. I have a soft spot for "Run Theft", a short film about a really long run. I don't want to give too much away (it's a little over ten minutes so I easily could) but I laugh every time I see Fergie make a cameo in his yellow jeep. They also did a special documentary about the anniversary of Sex Dwarf. They recently just finished wrapping up their latest film "10 Jakes" and it should be on hand when Solstice makes a comeback.

This is a magazine that literally showcases a whole lot of stuff. Primarily it is a music magazine (well most of the time). but it also has all kinds of interesting comics, and I'm not talking your average Family Circus or Ziggy style comics (Red Meat may even be afraid on most occasions)! But I even skimmed through stories about Barack Obama and....Pigeons? some of the stories are serious, while others are far from it. But either you're bound to find something that will grab your interest, and another thing that will disturb you highly.
