This would be the perfect campground if getting a site wasn't so obnoxious.
You literally have to stalk up and down the campground looking for people who are leaving so that you can tag their site - if you're lucky, you'll get one in the water.
We camped here in 2016 and had to be there by 7am to secure a spot.
This year, we camped an hour away and got up at 5:45 to head to the campground...we were the second car to arrive looking for a site. We strolled up and down and watched more and more cars roll in. We decided to tag a site without asking and had another person say we weren't supposed to do that and what if he talked to him first? We laughed and told him go ahead. We walked up and down the campground and watched people literally camp out at the end of sites that were tagged to leave that day - a chick in a chair with a blanket and book, the other guy's wife was at another, and another had a guy eating breakfast on the trash can across the street while he waited. We talked to a few people and they said people had already staked their claim the night before. THE NIGHT BEFORE!!! On the next pass through, the site we tagged had activity (it was about 830 or so) - I told my husband to hurry and ask him. As we approached, we saw the other guy headed in the same direction...almost like an old western showdown (not really, but when you try for a site, you'll appreciate the metaphor). We got there first...they guy was super nice and I explained I had tagged without talking to him first - he didn't care, told us to fill it out and put the tag on and put a piece of equipment down. He only asked that they have time to enjoy the site since it had rained the last few days. As we headed out, the other guy approached us and asked if we were going to take the site...uh, yeah. No question. He said, " well, I was going to talk to him, but the ranger made me move my car...". Well, sorry for him, but the ranger was more concerned about him parking in the road instead of us prematurely tagging a site.
But we received payback.
The camp host stopped to visit and told us to update our site date if we decided to stay longer so people wouldn't bother us. The day before we left, we were enjoying the beginning of a sunset on the top of our little bluff and "Michelle from 18" (she said this several times)came all the way the heck back to pay us a visit - were we leaving tomorrow? Can she tag our site? Where are we from? She's from here, she now Iives there...And on and on...we told her yes just to get her to leave. Later that night, I'm trying to get my kids ready for bed and Michelle on 18 was back. "Hi. It's Michelle! What time will you be leaving? Can we put something on your site?" Ugh. Go away! We told her not until noon.
The next morning, her chairs were there. Waiting. We enjoyed what we could of our morning, finally packing up with Michelle on 18 and her crew waiting in a car nearby. As we pulled out, another car tried to pull in, not caring that Michelle on 18 was waiting. Alas, Michelle's man hopped out of the car to stop her as we drove away shaking our heads at what it takes to secure a sight.
Aside from the ridiculousness of actually getting a site, the waterfront sites are amazing!! We will stay again. read more
