Here you'll find a surfaced parking lot, grills, picnic benches, a small shelter and public restrooms. If you want to make your way to the beach and the waters of Lake Superior, walk down one of two designated boardwalks to avoid stepping on the protected beach grass. Lakeshore Boulevard has a largely rocky shore, but this is a great stop to dip your toes in the sand or enjoy a picnic lunch like I did.

One hundred of the sites have electricity. The remaining ten are tent sites. Prices in 2023 were $25 for a tent site, $40 with electricity, and $50 with full hookups. We had a very good experience as tent campers here. We were walk-ins on a Thursday night in late May, and were able to secure a site. (About half of the tent sites were already reserved). The girls in the office, both students at Northern Michigan University, were very helpful and friendly -- even giving us recommendations of places to visit and restaurants to visit. (Thanks to them, we learned about a unique Marquette food -- cudighi). The tent sites are clustered along the water, and each has a picnic table and fire ring. Parking is close by but not directly at each of the individual sites. The campground has well-maintained hot showers, restrooms with flush toilets, and paved roads. It has a beach, small playground, grills, and hiking/biking trails. The location is great -- about one mile from the Lake Superior Beaches. We also drove a short distance to do the short hike up Sugarloaf Mountain to the observation deck, and drove over to drive the Presque Isle Park Loop. Finally, the campground was relatively far from traffic and quiet, so we were able to get a good night's sleep.

The Iron Ore Heritage Trail (IOHT) does not disappoint. With equal parts of nature and history, it's a great destination for walkers, riders, joggers, kids and families. While not completely paved, the crushed aggregate is easily navigated on my city bike. I went out yesterday after a night of rain and the path was in great shape (surprise!). Folks in the area are very proud of this trail and rightfully so. It's beautiful and fun, a treasure for all ages to enjoy.

The Iron Ore Heritage Trail is a 47 Mile long multi-use trail that runs along Lake Superior and…read moredeep into the forests throughout Marquette County in Upper Michigan. The trails (which are basically the old railways that were used to move ore to the kilns along the lake) are now used for recreation such as hiking and biking. Along Lake Superior it passes through many parks and beaches with amazing views. There are also places to eat, shop or have a drink along the trail (at least in Marquette). I have only been on the trails in Marquette, which is a small portion of the 47 miles, but according to the information available online or at most touristy spots, there are plenty on other sights, foods and history to take in along the rest of the trail. I purchased a kayaking excursion voucher through Uncle Ducky's / Paddling Michigan during a holiday…read morepromotion and later traveled from out of town specifically for this experience, spending additional money on lodging, gas, food, and travel expenses in order to participate. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disorganized and unprofessional from the moment I arrived. The building was locked, no guide or management staff were present, there was no organized check-in process, and there was absolutely no communication regarding what was happening. Multiple guests were left outside confused and attempting to determine whether the tour was even operating. Company-associated staff eventually arrived but provided no meaningful information until directly prompted. At that point, they stated they were only shuttle drivers and that they had to "figure out what was going on" after the scheduled rendezvous time had already passed. At no point within the first 20 minutes of our rendezvous was there was any clear communication, leadership, organization, or professionalism demonstrated by the company. Considering they're responsible for guiding customers onto Lake Superior, I no longer felt comfortable or safe participating in the excursion and chose not to proceed with 10 minutes remaining until the a scheduled launch time. I attempted to resolve this directly via email since management wasn't present during working hours and present staff couldn't provide a direct way to contact management; however, they refused to issue a refund. The owner instead responded publicly to a review in a defensive manner while claiming an emergency situation had occurred. He even blamed my inability to adapt over his employees vague and unprofessional verbal responses and despite three shuttle drivers being present and not shuttling us to our launch. The issue is the complete lack of communication, organization, professionalism, and reasonable resolution afterward.

After inspecting a crack…read morein a kayak, they first decided to not let anyone use it, but when they were short kayaks, two younger boys were allowed in. The verged on rude during the entire morning. most of the dry bags are very old and pretty useless. the spray skirts were the same. there was endless chaos getting everyone ready for over an hour. The guide was nice but only engaged us in about 5 minutes of information about the sandstone cliffs and it was all information you could get from a visitor center. If you want a naturalist, better to find out who is leading your trip. There was no lunch provided which seems ridiculous for the money paid. We couldn't tell if they cancelled a portion of our trip because of weather (as stated) or because their kayak transport pontoon boat had sunk at the put-in spot. Their website states 6 hours of paddling. After the morning debacle, we paddled leisurely for 2 hours to lunch and less than 2 hours back (with the wind). The 'long paddle' we were supposed to do was supposedly only 2 hours further, far short of the 8 total hours mentioned on their site. I guess their times include waiting in the parking lot, waiting for them to organize on the beach, and a very leisurely 1 hour on a beach eating the lunch you bring along. Seeing the views from the a kayak is great, but this company is not.

6 of us had this lake trout charter lined up for months, we were told to be at the lower harbor in…read moreMarquette at 6 am July 6 2013. We confirmed the location and time before. I live in Houghton and have spent 20 years on Lake Superior and know the dangers well. I left my house at 3:30 am and started to drive the 2+ hours, one hour into the drive I noticed the wind was really blowing, I called the guys and asked if Ducky would call if the waves were too big to fish or too dangerous to go, no calls, so we continue, I get there at 5:40, my friends pull in and we spend the next 40 minutes looking for the charter boat and calling Ducky with no answer. 7 am Ducky calls back and says we are still on but he is confused why we were in Marquette, we needed to drive 20 minutes more to shelter bay. Remember we confirmed Marquette. So we drive the extra 20 and the captain tells us we can go if we want, but he doesn't recommend it as the waves are 6 to 8 feet and building making it impossible to fish, I had the feeling this would happen, but Ducky had no regard for his captain or customers he was only concerned that he get his cut of the $1200 bucks we would have paid. Hey guys you can go in small craft advisories, just make sure you pay up front....A simple phone call to reschedule would have saved us all a lot of time and money and we would have been writing a different review as well. $70 bucks on gas, 6 hours round trip driving time and a waste of time could have been avoided with a simple call. There are many real good lake trout charter outfits, I recommend you look into any other service but this one.
