This small business is clearly the owner's passion, as he offered advice (but was not pushy) and cracked jokes with me when he came to check on me every once in a while. He knows his stuff! I was also impressed with the selection of manufactured, handmade, and rental costumes throughout the store, especially since other costume shops aren't even open at this time of year. I am a SERIOUS costume consumer for both Halloween and Xmas Bell Ringing as a volunteer for the Downtown St Paul EXCELLENT Salvation Army Corps ( they provide groceries for over 500 household EVERY week on West 7th and Smith). The QUALITY, the uniqueness of their inventory ( GLORIOUS masks!!!), their hand made rental Costumes, the Ben Nye ( they have the FULL line) top quality professional makeup, the Marvelous realistic noses ears warts, the HUGE selection of outrageous GLORIOUS wigs for any occasion -- SUPER fun colors amazing styles ( i must have 15-20). Deb is an incredible resource FULL of wondrous suggestions and PERFECT ideas. Ssssoooo CREATIVE!!!! Pick her brains! Wow. In my former home Where my daughters happily grew up, we were at the bottom of a huge hill next to 10 acres of woods. I collected 25 (!!) years of magnificent decorations from Virginia and THIS store and decorated for 36 hours over many weeks with over 2000 lights in deep purple orange fiber optics moving lights... pure MAGIC and a professional fog machine next to the woods. I averaged 250 +/- children EVERY year with my old boom box blaring fun halloween rock roll -- no skeletons-- nothing scary. And i had AMAZING fun truly different things -- all from Twin Cities Magic! I just went today for genuine sleigh bells a fun head piece and portable lights decor for my Salvation Army bucket for Roseville Mall Macys! Shops like this are fast disappearing! We were so excited to be able to rent their incredible, light-weight, full-sized wooden coffin for a cemetery scene in a music video, 'Ghosted'. It was very realistic and was the perfect touch! We're renting it again for a live on-stage performance of the song at a film festival. Please, please, please do not support this business. Yes, they have a wide variety of options for costumes and magic supplies, but they are flat-out unethical businesspeople. Here's a first impression for you: I park in front of the store and begin clearing snow off my windshield that was blocking my wipers on the way to the store. A worker (his daughter) entering the store gives me a sour look, and within 30 seconds the owner comes out with a shovel and agitated energy and starts shoveling the minuscule amount of snow I had pushed off, as if to shame me for doing so on his property. Okay, fine. I go in and proceed to rent a jacket and pants for a show the next day (I'm a musician). Showtime: While wearing the rented pants, I bend down to set up a piece of equipment and my pants split down the entire back--a 12-inch hole while onstage with 150 people watching! The details of how I navigated this onstage are not important. A kind friend who saw the show offered to sew the ripped seam before I returned them the following day. I took her up on her offer. Before handing her the pants, however, I took a photo of them: THREE, yes, THREE stitches had been holding the seat of the pants together. The pants were essentially stitched to rip (and I'm a slender guy). When I returned them, the owner asked how everything went. I sad, "not well," and explained the situation. He looked away in silence with that same eccentric smile he always has (I've been there a few times before). I allowed the silence to ensue while looking at him and then said: "I am not happy with this rental. It was an embarrassing situation for me onstage in the presence of 150 onlookers." More silence as I waited for him to say something and perhaps offer something to satisfy his clearly unsatisfied customer. Nothing. Finally, just to break the silence, he squeezed out a weak, ever-so-reluctant "I'm sorry." I turned and walked out, as it was clear that once he got his money there was no way in hell he was going to part with any portion of it. People like this never cease to amaze me, especially because this "professional" could so easily have turned the situation around by being a man, offering a heartfelt apology and then giving his customer a refund or store credit. SOMETHING. The business model of "Ha! I've got your money!" is so near sighted, but hey, they've been in business since 1986. I should also say that there a several other terrific costume shops in the TC area, so please refrain from enabling such lousy customer service and unethical behavior. There's a far better shop (both merchandise and customer service) in Maplewood, in fact. My experience with this business's overall character corroborates others who have taken the time to write negative reviews. What an absolute weasel. read more

My boyfriend and I went into this disorganized, cheaply made, over priced costume store and everything was going great, we looked around the entire store looking for a Halloween costume. We couldn't find anything so we decided to leave, as we were getting into our car the man working at the time (Wednesday the 13th around 5:15pm) followed us out of the store and into the parking lot asking if we "found everything alright" clearly assuming we were stealing. The staff have always been very helpful and attentive, more importantly they offer extraordinarily useful tips and tricks that have helped me save money and achieve the desired results. If I have time on my side, I share in as much detail as possible the result that I'm trying to achieve, and they have researched then ordered options. Their suggestions have been spot on, and they have never failed to meet a deadline so I've never missed mine. If I don't have time on my side and I have a show, they have an extensive library of costumes, make up and supplies that have worked out fantastic! When you're taking stage in front of thousands you need to make sure the effects are right, and you're look will hold during the show. I bought a ton of fake blood last week. Yelp was a sponsor for the Zombie Pub Crawl (which shattered records this year with an estimated 13,000 in attendance or something nutso like that). I ended up having this idea to host a Yelp Blood Bath at the 501 Club, which is exactly what we did. I had a vague notion of how it would work, but it came together about one day ahead of time thanks (in part) to Twin Cities Magic & Costume, who sold me oodles of powdered fake blood for the occasion. The shop is on West 7th in St. Paul, right before it becomes East 7th. I found a metered spot nearby and as I walked closer, I kept thinking "WOW, this place is huge." For a costume and magic shop that stays open all year round, this is an enormous space. They must do OK! The level of merchandise was varied, from the typical Legs Avenue-type sexy nurse things to the real deal (crazy-good masks and tons of costume makeup). Generally, I like to construct my costume using thrift stores, but they have everything you would ever need here in one place. One-stop shopping. It's very tempting. Back to the blood though, I called about a week before the event and inquired what kind of blood options I had. The owner or manager was super friendly and helped me figure out that the powder was probably the easiest for the mass quantity that I needed. He said they would be getting in another shipment later in the week and it would definitely be there by Friday. I was recommended to visit this store by a clerk at an arts and crafts store that sold me body paint. As a disclaimer, I am completely new to this world, and really was not researched well enough to come in and hold my own. That's on me. I came into Twin Cities Magic and Costumes to get help with a body paint involved Halloween costume idea I had. If you've ever watched arrested development, I was going to be blue nevernude Tobias Funke. So, I needed to paint my body blue. I had already bought the body paint, and was told all I would need was setting powder and I would be good to go. Apparently, according to the associate who "helped" me, that was wrong. I needed to buy a powder, a spray AND makeup remover, along with some other products that I still don't know the purpose of, in order to pull off this humorous costume that I'm only going to do once. The price came out to nearly $80, and while I certainly should have spoken up for myself, I feel that I was still taken advantage of, because the associate knew I had no idea what was going on. I got home and researched the body paint I had bought, and on the company's website, it said that I did not need even the setting powder, and that the paint would rinse off in water. There were a few other products that I had bought did not need. I had the products divided into groups of what I did and did not need, and was ready to get in my car and return the unneeded items, but then I read on the bottom of the receipt, ALL SALES FINAL. Look, ultimately I realize that this was my responsibility and that I should have done more homework ahead of time and that I should have just said "this is more than I want to spend"; I was very excited about this Halloween costume idea, and I wanted to make it happen so I sprung to action. This loss is on me, but I do feel like there are much better ways to do business than to take advantage of a first-time customer who doesn't understand what you're selling to him, and then make him unable to return the products he decides he does not need. It looked like a cool shop, but I will never give them my business again, and I will discourage anyone I know who could potentially be one of their customers from doing business there. Be careful what you buy and do not rely on the advice of the owner. I called to see if they had bald wigs. I meant the type that you can put on and take off quickly. The owner said I meant a bald cap. I had no idea what a bald cap was, but assumed this was the technical name. So, I went to the store and told the owner that I was the person who had called. He took me to the back of the store and gave be a item enclosed in a hard plastic box. I paid over $20 for it. When I got home I realized that this was not a bald wig like I wanted. It was a piece of tissue paper that you needed to glue to your head and color with makeup. When I returned to the store to return the bald cap and get a bald wig, I was told that they were absolutely no returns. When I pointed out that they had mislead me and sold me something other than what I wanted, they blew me off. I have since looked on the internet and found that the item I really wanted is in fact called a bald wig. They seem to be cheaper than bald caps. I don't know if this is why he sold me a more expensive item. read more

If I hadn't gone in there with a specific need I probably would've got stuck in there just looking at all the awesomeness. Been here a couple of times and every time I get followed and harassed. They do not allow picture taking so be careful to not ever do that or you will get your head bit straight off by the old lady working the floor. Even though they do not bother to tell anyone you can not take pictures... No signs etc. welcome to 2014, everyone takes pics and shares them. I even talked to the manager about how I feel and he just flat out told me I am wrong and argued with me, did not let me speak, kept talking over me! Very rude and unprofessional! Never will I step foot in this store. Such a shame because they have good stuff and the variety is killer, I'd shop there all year. The one star is for that, because they really do not deserve any stars with how horrid they treat people. read more

I've purchased costumes, gags, and magic like offerings here for years. They've got just about anything you could want. This is a store packed to the rafters with fun and entertaining gags, gifts, costumes, magic supplies, Halloween makeup...you name it! I definitely preferred the old location, but it's essentially the same old place. Last time I came, we bought some costume pieces, some invisible string, and a few other trinkets. The help here is great, they know what they're talking about and can point you in the right direction. The help however, is why I rate TC Magic and Costume as I do. I'd say they were a 5 star establishment if it weren't for the car salesman treatment you get while you're there. read more

My bad timing. I visited this place to pick up a couple silly magic tricks to entertain my nieces. This close to Halloween TCM&C has to be focused on costumes and other goulish tricks. Nonetheless an employee took the time to show me a couple tricks and assure me that even with my four thumbs I could give my girls a giggle or two. Unbelievable selection of costumes, wigs, masks, makeup and all the accessories I've ever needed for costumed events through the years. They have a bazillion types of blood and special effects, lighting and all the fog I needed to put on a killer display at my party. Their customer service is second to none! Every time I've been there, the staff has delivered exactly what I was looking for-and they're extremely knowledgeable. On the rare occasion they didn't have it, they ordered it quickly, and the price was right. I have taken my son here for 7 years since he became interested in magic at age 9. They have a great range of skill levels from beginner to professional. He even took a couple of their magic classes. He got great help from the staff, getting tricks and advice to match his ability. They never pushed tricks that were too easy, too hard or out of his price range. My son performs up-close magic, street magic, and has done a few performances for large groups. I feel that TCMCC helped him to succeed in his goals. read more

Amazing, product was featured there last year, which SINCE then I've found all over the internet. It's DVDs that you can use at home for projecting Dracula and other creatures in your house for Halloween. The display was tiny, I hard ly noticed it among the crowd of people there in late October 2011. But there was a Spider crawling on the floor in front of a counter. If it werent for the overhead lights and bright windows it would have looked real. Truly something to check out in the store. It's a near total realistic 3D effect from a little video projector hidden above a door. A must see. Turns out the maker is a guy named Jon Hyers, but he doesn't have a storefront, only sells the DVDs on the web. But it seems big, Jon Hyers google search brings up hundreds of web store listings. And we can just walk into Twin Cities Magic and buy these, outstanding. HEY TARGET STORE, HEY BEST BUY, YOU GUYS ARE MISSING SOMETHING THAT YOU DON'T HAVE!!!! read more

We visited this costume shop and rented 2 costumes from them for an upcoming party which cost me $189.00 upfront for the rental. 3 days later the costume party was canceled and I am out my $189.00 rental fee. I called the store to cancel the order and was told by "Jim" that he will not refund me for the rental but would only offer a store credit. This store has costumes and magic supplies, I explained that I have no need for anything in his store and then was told by "Jim" that I should throw a costume party. Not at all the customer service one would expect! If you paid for goods and do not have a need for those goods especially costume rentals the business should have a better policy! Needless to say I am disputing charges through my credit card company and plan to go to the better business bureau for full refund. I would not recommend this store for anyone in the future! read more
