The customer service is very nonexistent. I had pre-ordered some balloons and when I arrived, I decided that I wanted to add some to bulk the bunch up a bit so I asked if they had any specialty balloons that say thank you or I appreciate you or something along those lines. I am an avid crafter, painting, calligraphy, wax seals...etc. I love popping in here to browse. However. They do no honor online pricing. They will do a 40% off online coupon for store pickup or a 25% in store coupon. I always place my order online for in-store pickup. Seems like a waste of the employee's time if I am already in store and have done my shopping. Employees could definitely be friendlier and I would really appreciate just being helped at the register instead of being told self check is available. I always say no thank you and can feel the cashier have an attitude when they have to ring me up. It's very annoying. So again, do your shopping online to save money AND save receiving an attitude. read more

I get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of merchandise selection at this store, but the app / online purchase option combined with the self checkout option in store makes it so much better. I came to buy 21 blue T-shirts for a project but had to visit two different stores to get the sizes I wanted. Service was excellent and efficient. Plus I was able to buy a silicone mold I've always wanted on clearance for six dollars. You can find great deals if you're patient. read more

I ran into to Michael's just to browse while waiting for my order to be completed nearby. The store seemed decently clean & organized. I like that they put out holiday items early so I was able to browse Christmas items early into fall. I love doing all types of crafts so it's always fun to go craft stores for inspiration. I will say 2 of the workers were near the door when I came in and they didn't greet me or anything. Another worker later on came and asked if I needed anything. Same for when I checked out. They could be a bit friendlier. read more

This Michaels store is a five-minute drive from where I am staying. It's in Eagan Promenade, next door to OfficeMax. I checked this store out after shopping at OfficeMax. There is plenty of parking at this plaza. I did a lot of browsing. The clearance items are down a corridor when you first walk through the doors. There were some great post-Christmas deals, including Funko Pop figurines and jewelry-making kits. My favourite area is the calligraphy aisle. I managed to find a felt-tipped calligraphy pen that was just over $2. I decided to get it. This section is pretty good compared to most Michaels that I have frequented. The tie-dye aisle stands out. I have never seen such an extensive selection of paint, kits, and t-shirts. If you are into tie-dying everything, you may want to check out this store. The only downside was not seeing a whole lot of staff members helping folks out. I didn't need any, but I did see a couple of customers trying to flag staff members with no luck. I paid for my item with a credit card. The woman was competent, but wasn't exactly warm. Maybe that's simply who she is. It's a decent store. My calligraphy pen works well. No complaints here. My mom was always really into crafting when I was a kid and would frequently take me down to the local art store down a mile or so from our house--named 'Which Craft', of course--to stock up on supplies. I remember sitting there for hours picking out projects to do with her (papier mâché dinosaurs = YESSS) and pointing out patterns for costumes she'd excitedly make me. I'm over a thousand miles away from those days both literally and figuratively, but something about walking into Michael's makes those memories come flooding back full force. Perhaps it's the typical scents of wicker, fake flowers and seasonal merchandise that fills all craft stores; perhaps it's the vivid, sweet excitement of being surrounded by aisles of endless potential. Regardless, it never fails to put a smile on my face when I walk through the doors. Michael's never fails to have good sales on (surprisingly) pricier items like oil paint, beads, sculptor grade clay and canvases. I've taken advantage of their coupons during these sales and walked out with 300+ dollars of merchandise for 90 bucks--true story, brotum. If you're into doing multiple things like I am, I highly recommend making sure you do a quick sweep for the materials for of all of them if you have the time. I've been shopping for beads and found the prices a little on the rape-y side only to go a couple aisles over to see that the sale they had on clay was raptor-balls amazing and well worth the trip. I'll break down my opinion on some of the areas I tend to frequent: ____ Beads: Huge selection of basic 'builder' beads, but their pendants/focal beads are somewhat lacking. You won't find anything unique (such as you would at, say, Beadniks) but it's a solid selection for a beginner or casual enthusiast. Stock up on the more expensive gemstone and crystal beads when they're on one of their kickass 50-60% off sales and nab the focal beads elsewhere. You'll save a ton and your end product will feel a lot more expensive than it actually was. The quality of the wire they sell here is nothing short of heinous, though, and fades/snaps faster than my ex. Canvases/Paints: Their selection is a touch more diluted than a pure art store (obviously), but they have reasonable prices on huge display quality canvases. If you're looking to save a bit of money on paint but don't want to sacrifice on the integrity of your finished product, their mid-grade 'Windsor & Newton' brand is sufficient in most cases, producing rich tones and favorable color retention. If you do plan on springing for the top notch stuff and you don't spooge Ben Franklins, the colors go on 'selective sales' (meaning that not all of them often go on one big sweeping sale). Clay: A wide variety of clay ranging from 'let's buy this cheap neon shit to keep the kids occupied so we can hump or eat Taco Bell' to 'I'm going to eat some Taco Bell after I faithfully recreate the exterior of the Sistine Chapel' quality. -Tons- of BOGO sales in this department, so keep your eyes open. ____ Even though I know it's a chain, I don't want to see it bite the big one. Places like these are slowly going the way of the buffalo, I think, and it would be a shame to see the end of a hands-on era as we delve ever deeper into the digital age. My suggestion? Take up a hobby even if you've never considered doing so before. You'll be terrible at it in the beginning (I'm a realist, gais), but you just might discover a part of yourself you never knew existed. Also, papier mâché dinosaurs. Michael's has a really wide selection but frequently they will be completely out of stock of exactly the one item I need. The store also gives off a cluttered feel because a lot of the front displays seem to get piled up in a disorganized manner. The staff is friendly and pretty willing to help you out if you ask, although I've noticed that the people on the cake decorating side seem to repetitively check in with you whereas the people on the needle crafts side seem to not be very present (or they bustle past you as though you are part of the display). Interesting divide. Something I don't like about Michael's as a company is the amount of coupons they spew. Why not save a few trees and just lower your prices instead of forcing this coupon juggling act? Maybe what I'm saying is that this pales in comparison to a locally owned yarn store, which is pretty obvious from the get-go. read more

I had placed a pickup order at 3pm. Said it was being picked at 3:30. Ready to pick up at 5. Went to pick it up at 7, get there and I can't find my order on the pickup rack. Went to the register and the woman at the front and asked about my order. Didn't say a word, and walked away as she looked around for my order. Came back, still in silence, and in the awkward silence with a long line of people behind me, I asked if she needed my order number or any information from me. She just said "no no no.." and walked away again.. Another 5 minutes pass and she returns with another girl not saying a word to me. The 2nd girl "manager", looked at her little scanner for another 2 minutes and finally spoke. Hallelujah! She said "uh, so I'm not seeing your order in our system." I showed her the email and app that stated that it was ready for pickup at this specific location. She literally just stared at me with no words, again, so then I asked "...can I at least get a refund if it isn't here." She blatantly just said "no." And at this point I'm just confused. I didn't wanna be a Karen, but the only option at that point was to then ask if there was a corporate number I could call to get me a refund for the items that I obviously had paid for yet not received. She said nothing and walked away. The girl at the register just shoved my other items that I had grabbed earlier to the side and yelled "I can help the next guest." Just pushing me to the side. I stepped off to the side and just kept my cool. The "manager" came back with a number and stated she called the boss above her for any help because "this has happened before" and proceeded to walk away. I then just took a deep breath, took the number, and proceeded to grab the same items I placed the order for to just get my items and leave. I asked yet again at the front if she could give me any type of discount as I wasn't in the mood to spend another $50 on yarn. She just said no, scanned the items, and here I am currently on hold with corporate for an hour at this point.
