Impeccably clean, warm and inviting and with an air of sophistication that belies its humble South Jersey location, VA is one part tattoo studio and one part art museum. No flash, piercings or body mod here; VA is all about the ink and taking it to a whole new level. Owner MJ Bonanno, Dan Fisher and Kristy Ruggiero are three of the most talented tattooers in the area. MJ recently re-did my first tattoo and the end result was twice as good as the original (which I had done elsewhere, back when I didn't know any better!) This is MJ's second studio and he's clearly learned a thing or two about what a studio can -- and should -- be. Whether your getting your first tattoo or your 100th, do yourself a favor and visit Valhalla Artworks before you make your final (permanent!) decision. Not only is it extremely clean and sanitary, but the artists are talented... REALLY talented. The shop is tucked away in South Jersey, but don't let that deter you Philly residents. She went over everything with me and showed me the earrings. It was way too plain for me and the only downfall - they don't have a good variety to choose from in stock. If you wan't rhinestones/more bling or a specific style, etc., you'll need to order it with her, wait for it to come in and then go back to get your piercing. With the fact that I have been contemplating getting this piercing done for a long time, I knew I was ready to get it done right then and there..but also wanted something with bling. Lucky for me, Shannon was able to find an earring with a "little" bling and told me it was available since the person who ordered it, after a month or so, never came back. I decided to go for it and so glad I did. I did tell Shannon to not show me the needle she was going to use or anything because I'd probably run out of the room lol Shannon was very informative; told me everything she was doing, step by step. She was very clean, very nice and super gentle. It happened so quickly with one deep breath. After she was done, she went over in detail on clean/care instructions. The staff is super friendly, and the shop takes their service very seriously. I show up at my allotted time (maybe 10 mins early cause there's always paperwork). I get all signed in. The person running the desk is usually pretty busy. They seem to get a lot of calls and bookings when the shop is full of artists and folks. When it's my turn I get escorted back to the artist or they come and get me in the cute little waiting area. There's clearly a lot of time taken to keep the shop clean here. I've seen so many single use sanitary needles and paper towels among other things. Everything gets wiped down before I get going. The artists do a good job of making sure you are ready and super happy with the sizing and placing. One of my tattoos I actually asked to be moved three or four times and I felt like a butt but the artist was super chill about it. I am not the person to send back a restaurant dish if it's wrong and it took some practice to tell artists to resize or relocate an outline. During the tattooing process I get asked a good number of times if I'm comfortable or if I need to stand up and shake it out. They do have water and snacks if you forget, but you should always eat! I will always return to this shop. It's a third-place for me for sure. I always feel like family.
