Jorge worked hard to find fish on a choppy-water day and came through when we caught a large kingfish that took about 20 minutes to reel in. Jorge cleaned the fish, cut out filets for us, and arranged lunch at a nearby restaurant. The fish and lunch were fantastic! Jorge struck me as a first class person and great captain. Will arrange my next Miami fishing trip with him again.

I mustered the courage to hook the frozen squid but once the fish came up, I'd be damned if my hands went anywhere near it. Then there came Steve. My new fishing buddy took me out to this pier just down the street from my house. Like adventurous (and trespassing) teens, we hopped the dumpster and jumped over the fence. Only 10 yards away, an obvious entrance to the apartment building welcomed everyone else without the wits to illegally enter. Nevertheless, there we were on the short hike to the pier on the bay. The scene was quiet and serene with only the rapping of the tide against the low seawall. As dusk turned to night, Steve and I settled in as the only two fisherpeople casting our hooks to sea. Steve's friend claimed to catching a 20 pound tarpon only weeks earlier. For us, the only fish looking to sample bait happened to be baby snapper and grunts. Every catch went back to the water and as I huddled close to my hoodie and took in the low glow from the pier lights, I loved every second of my little adventure with Steve and thought I could be anywhere but 5 minutes from my house.

I found these guys on Yelp and decided to call them to see if there was any last minute availability. To my surprise, they had a tour available for the following day, our last day in Miami. That same night I got a call from the owner. I was dreading answering the phone because I thought for sure it was them calling to cancel on us because of some unforeseen circumstances. But I was wrong! The owner called to let us know that he had an even better tour (one more suitable for what we were trying to do) at a much more convenient time! I really appreciate that they thought to call us and offer us the more beneficial package. I should add that the owner was super kind and helped me throughout the entire booking process. He was very patient with me while I struggled to book online. There site is super easy to navigate, I'm just not tech-savvy. When we did go out on our tour, we were given the greatest captain/instructor. Captain Sasha was so sweet and funny and knowledgeable. It was my first time snorkeling and he walked me through everything and made it all so simple. He was kind enough to take a ton of wonderful photos of my friend and me while we snorkeled. He let us take our time and enjoy ourselves and was such a pleasure. He even gave us a tour of the area which I know he did not have to do. After probably too much decision making, I chose a guide, only to have him cancel on me a day later (family emergency). He was kind enough to put me in touch with Captain Mo, and I cant imagine having a better guide. My wife and I made the drive down from Lauderdale, with the plan to sight fish for bonefish and permit- something I'd never done before. We've fished all over North America, but I've never had more difficulty than I did with bones. Guess my eyesight was terrible that day, and my casting wasn't great either. Didn't get a thing, and when I asked what else we could target, Mo suggested barracuda. Caught more than our share of them, mixed in with a shark or two. We only had four hours, but it was outstanding. Couldn't blame Mo for me not being able to hit the fish he put us on! Mo is a knowledgeable guide, and more importantly, a great guy. He made the day very enjoyable, and I'll definitely give him a call when we are back in town!

Fortunately the water was nice and calm. The sky was blue. But the fish weren't biting. We did catch a couple that we threw back. We were certainly disappointed in that, but that's how it goes sometimes. This is an older 45 foot Hatteras. Good looking boat but it certainly has got some age on it. There were no matter chemical problems of course and the boat has a very nice and smooth ride. All the tackle which is provided for the $750 half-day trip is included. We bought our own refreshments, but upon arrival to the boat the ice chest was already full of refreshments for enjoyment. That was very thoughtful and appreciative. We will certainly use this boat again in the future. Check in on yelp before you pay. There is a $50 discount for those who check in. This will reduce the $750 half-day trip down to 700.

Container ships move through this harbor. You stand on the jetty and watch scale happen in real time, cranes and stacks and the whole industrial apparatus that makes Miami function. That's more honest than another beach bar with a sunset filter. The pier is maintained like it matters. The surface holds, the railing is sound, the whole structure feels like someone decided it shouldn't fall apart, and they stuck with that decision. The breakwater gives you rock access, shallow water, tide-dependent depth. Early morning swimmers treat it seriously. The jetty extends far enough that the city shrinks behind you, and you're in dialogue with the open water instead of looking at it from shore.
