It appears no matter where you rent a U-Haul in Bakersfield you are most likely going to have a bad experience. I made a reservation plenty of time in advance and then 2 days before go time, I get a call saying I need to pick up the truck a day early or else I have to wait until 10 am of the original day, when I made the reservation for 7 am. Pick up was also much further away than where I reserved it. I reserved furniture dolly's and those were not in the truck, so I had to go to another location instead. read more

Rating the overall experience with this location is poor. The 10' moving van was in poor condition, both sun visors were broken with kept falling in front of the driver's area of view, which is a hazard. The gas gage would not read unless your actually driving so filling up at the gas station is a hit or miss. But the icing on the cake was when we were returning the vehicle a young short girl with a bunch of acne on her face was EXTREMELY RUDE! Referring to me as "Bro" and calling me rude. She inspected the vehicle told me the amount that would be charged, so I simply asked her was that the overall total that was going to be changed? She looked at me as if I should already know the price and stated the price again. So we kept going back and forth on if that was the overall charge, she couldn't just say yes, she kept stating the price. So I asked her okay maybe you don't understand what I'm asking, is that including the Price I got charged this morning plus the amount now, because no one told me that the price in the morning is just a hold then including the mileage I would get the grand total at the end. It's not like I rent Uhaul all the time. I still didn't get the answer I was looking for, I just asked her to give me a receipt so I could figure the price out for myself. So frustrating to get one simple answer! So future reference Uhaul, please train your employees better regarding customer service and not call a customer "Bro". I'm giving this u-haul location a 1 star because unfortunately it doesn't let me give it a zero star! We came here a day ago to rent a U-Haul, and the lady at the register (Marsha) was being absolutely rude to my husband.. we came in today to return the U-Haul and got her again (Marsha) and now we both received terrible service. She shouldn't be allowed to work with people. she has NO good customer service at all!!!! Dont waste your time trying to get propane here. several times over the past 2 months Ive waited for them to come out to fill my tank only to be met with, "we're out of propane," understandable sure, or "we don't have anyone who can fill it for you." Two of those times I called first only to get the same answers once I arrive OR have to wait at the propane fill for more than 30 minutes. I paid and booked a tow hitch with installation on July 29th via https://www.uhaul.com/Trailer-Hitches/ , paid in full, and then received this confirmation email for my appointment. On the morning of the confirmed August 8th appointment I got up extra early to drive more than 2 hours to Bakersfield uhaul location from Guadalupe/Santa Maria. I arrived at 10:15am just for the staff to tell me there's no scheduled booking for me to install a hitch, no part, they had no accountability of poor communications for customer service. After speaking with manager Heather she tries to "educate " me on how to use the computer and how the internet/website/database/etc works. In other words, all employees at this location was trying to find anyway out and anyway possible to say this is not their fault for negligence. Ultimately they processed a refund that is $10 over. Giving a customer an extra $10 for their negligence is embarrassing and sad for the establishment. read more

Looks like i get to add another unfortunate one star tale of woe when dealing with this business, not that it matters as the company and management dont seem to care about their already low star rating. This business had an opportunity to have a raving 5 star review for doing the bare minimum to help us out of a tough situation, they also had a chance at this poor one star review for callously doing nothing instead, sadly, they chose the latter. On memorial day I had a van with 7 passengers (including several children) break down on me, due to the holiday we were not able find an adequate solution for transporting us and our vehicle home. We were able to eventually contact a family member who was able to use a vehicle capable of towing our van us (with a tow dolly) and transporting our passengers home. We did need to rent a tow dolly, though. Enter Uhaul. We contacted the White Lane location about our rental needs, they had the equipment, we made a reservarion. We informed them that we would be arriving near 7pm and that we were grateful they were open on the holiday and had the equipment we needed. Due to construction and traffic (and traveling with small children) we arrived at Uhaul at 7:03pm, where we were informed they closed at 7:00 (I think they might have even closed early, despite knowing we were on our way) and they could do nothing to help us. They wouldn't let us rent the equipment, they wouldn't help us, they didn't care about our situation or circumstance. And that is how my family, despite our best efforts, got stranded in Bakersfield on memorial day, just trying to get home. All for 3 minutes. Thanks a lot, Uhaul. read more

My friend came to rent a U-Haul and forgot his ID so he said he will be right back and the lady at desk said no something is weird , you cannot rent, we were surprised how she was acting like she needed to be drug tested, so I have a valid license and ordered a U-Haul and just because he was with me she was totally rude and put both of us on a do not rent for no reason. I have great credit and did nothing for her to discriminate against us. The fat lady needs to be fired and so does the tattooed girl. Well you can consider you've read a book if ya get to the all important conclusion. *Four parts The three Yelp questions were too binary. Answers would have been deceptive. The 15' truck was what you'd expect. Suspension was in had shape so the right lane on the 5 was a ball buster especially empty. It got 11 mpg mostly freeway. Why no tie down points in the box?! The fir strips are to protect the exterior not to aid the mover. TAKE PHOTOS. I obsessively took photos of all the damage inside and out. Cigarette burn holes in the seats-I don't smoke! Cracked windshield-I don't crack either!! Scuffs, damage of any kind. Not my circus. Beginning tank and ending tank take a pic!! Hell that's two!! 2 Now to the location. I'd reserved it a week before. Woman who runs the storage, I'd later learn, was friendly, competent and efficient. Arrive at arranged time on Monday morning and am not greeted by the woman who is doing several tasks inside the location and out. She's giving off an aura of a not so friendly truck you kind of deal. And I have to say I generally like red heads. I ignore it and figure it's Monday morning and she's covering for someone or just normally is overworked. When we got to the insurance that they want to be paid I told her my CC covered that. And I wasn't paying any of that. I'd actually gotten a cert emailed from my CC company (didn't know they did that) and checked on my personal auto insurance and I was more than covered. I was looking down but out of the corner of my eye, as she explained the seven(at least) levels of pain that U-haul would be sure I experienced if I didn't cough up more dinero for unnecessary insurance, I'm pretty sure her head spun 1080 degrees and her eyes flipped over to reveal a pentagram as she reiterated my future pain and lack of collaboration and cooperation from U-Haul. I had my special witch repelling sunglasses affixed and unphased told her I'd skip the insurance. Funny thing was she didn't ask to have a copy of any of my insurance printed or emailed. Wonder why that is.....Now, mind you, my glasses didn't inoculate me from giving her back a percentage of attitude. Just a scoche though. 3 So I do my move and return it taking the aforementioned obsessive photos. Oh forgot to say an employee saw me snapping before I started it in the morning and made note and went in to narc not to charge me the windshield etc because I was armed with one of those pocket computer-camera-phone contraptions. I filled it to the 3/8th tank in fact above because while I don't have a circus I've been to a few rodeos. I then dropped it after hours taking beautiful photos again of all the smart and stupid stuff. Including a fuel indicator above the required point. Who'd a thunk it? The next morning I'm greeted by the 1080 chick, well at least I think she said can I help you. I'd gotten a text from my card of @$25 additional to the estimated cost. She explained I was four miles over my estimated mileage and I hadn't filled the tank to 3/8th. So I was at 504 miles vs the estimate of 500(whoever's closest without going over! Come on down) I chuckled at how close I'd nailed the mileage and said the fuel part is an error, whoever did that needs to make sure one shoe isn't prematurely warn. I did that she replied as her eyes did that trick and her head disconnected from her body elevating as it spun rapidly without any mirrors or cgi I could see. No blood either. I told her I'd gotten X $ and X gallons at X price at the station just under a mile away and that dog don't hunt. She now levitated as she pulsed with an incessant faint beeping sound like a bomb past its detonation point was fixin to go boom. I told her I'd like to speak to her manager. It's like 7:40 am. She says she'll be in soon. About 7:55 I tell her to have the mgr call me please that I can't wait. I know I know she's not saying jack to her manager-whatever. 4 So I do what I have planned and circle back at 10 after my appt. I go in and the storage manager again is great and says the uhaul mgr is outside. I wait and she comes in. Now she's taken retail mgmt 101 and 110 and got a C in each. But she only audited integrity and honesty 101. She tells me she'd already reversed the erroneous(my words) charge a few moments ago in the most understanding and heartfelt Mom after your team loses but she's with ya voice. Stupid me I don't ask for a printout or anything but am so foolishly in her kind Mom tractor beam I tell her she has a bear with an itch that I was lucky enough to interact with on my only two interactions with U-haul. She's again that Mom after you lose your game voice of empathy and understanding. Phew he's gone I'm sure. Yelp won't let me finish. Sorry just run run away! read more

Should be zero stars. Rented 20ft truck had x's where damage was but onlly 11 of them I took 62 photos of damage. Returned they tried to say WE did it but my 62 photos saved us!!! Had to rent a snall trick forva mattress at the same time we dropped iff 20 ft truck. Same x's marked but only 7. I still took photos. Returned keys 4 hiurs later & next morning instead of $31 dollar charge I was charged $238 & told it was for damages!!!!!! So we hired some movers because I'm over 40 and so are all my friends. Pizza and beer doesn't appeal as a payment for helping a friend move any more. The movers didn't freaking show up, I'll be doing a review on them as well. We were told they'd be there at 1, then they called and said it wouldn't be till 3, then comes 6pm and we still haven't heard from them. We HAD to be out of our house so our buyers could move in the next day. We were in a bind and luckily uhaul had trucks available. So we went and got a truck by 7pm. Now, I was that overweight 40 year old trying to move their belongings in the middle of the night like some crackheads or as if I was in witness protection. Uhauls availability was what I really liked and why I'm writing this review. You can get a truck last minute and scramble like we were. I don't recommend it. Bright side, right after we rented the truck, the movers finally called back, apologized, and offered FREE moving early the next day. Customer service was rude, combative and yelled at me in the parking lot to move the vehicle that I was returning to another spot that was not only unavailable was inaccessible. I told them to move it and I was told in no uncertain terms "no YOU MOVE IT!!!!" I was yelled at. I'll have to post a picture of my storage unit when I return to get the lock I didn't damage cut off. Tl;Dr Someone clearly tried to break into our storage unit and all they did was offer to give us the number of the Locksmith they use regularly. We needed to go to our unit today in order to sell one of the items inside because we really need the money at the moment (ironically we need to sell some things to even afford the unit next month). We barely had enough to even pay for the unit this month and I was initially afraid that UHaul actually crimped the lock because we were late on this month's payment (the employee was quick to inform me that they could do no such thing, they can't use lock cutters, and plus we are completely up to date on our payments now). We haven't been to our unit in over a month or so, but when I attempted to open the lock I noticed the sliding mechanism was bent outwards and the lock was crimped as if someone tried to break into it making it impossible to open. We went inside and waited in line for 30 minutes to be told that there are no notes in the system about it (???) and that we have to hire a locksmith to come out and cut the lock off. I told them that the unit looks like someone attempted to break in and it's damaged (the silver sliding latch that the the lock attaches to is bent outwards like someone tried to hammer it off after falling to cut it). I asked if they had any footage or any form of assistance they could provide to help us understand what happened, but they just offered to give me the number of the locksmith they use frequently. They didn't even bother to go look at the unit nor did they seem even the slightest bit concerned. I don't even feel comfortable using them as my storage provider anymore, especially considering the fact that they were so laissez faire about the possible safety breach a helping me figure out what happened to my unit. I don't honestly even think the cameras serve a purpose, it's like definition security theater. I can't wait to have to waste more time and money to have someone cut a lock off my unit due to not fault of my own. We rented a Uhaul 20 feet truck for our move, costs $40 per day and comes with a set of miles for the long drive. They forgot to give us the furniture pads we ordered, had to ask for refund on that. Affordable and they had equipment for us rent like appliance dolly and large boxes to buy in bulk. read more

Well, let's see....first time I reserved a trailer the helper I had realized one tire was flat. The Uhaul had us loading up the trailer and about to check lights of trailer, when we realized we couldnt use the reserved trailer. The younger white guy stated, "They didnt have another open trailer and if we didnt mind going to another location?" Before I could answer my helper told the guy theres another same exact trailer right there. Can we just use that one? Employee replied "oh, yeah! You can use that one" Before you check out Uhaul has to call an alternate person not with you. However, if a person is with you, they can go outside as Uhaul calls. Not sure why? Sometimes Uhaul tells you the person can go outside, sometimes they just stay silent and tell you an alternate person cant be with you. Not sure what the reason for this is? Its a waste of time, let me get a trailer to get moving. This location has free boxes at the front of the register. Also, FYI if you reserve a trailer with the app. theres a feature where you can book helper movers that are contracted out from Uhaul. If you can afford the moving help, I highly recommend it. The movers are punctual, helpful, very careful with your belongings, they will bring anything you need. (Trucks, dollies, etc.) Lastly, this location gets packed early, make sure you go first thing when they open to speed up the process. read more

I have had good experiences with U-Haul in the past but today was not one of them. I had issues with the app, however that is not the blame of this local office. When we got to our location to load, we discovered the back of the truck was locked and we did not have a key for it. We had to either go back to this location to have them cut it off or wait an hour for roadside assistance. Once returning to our loading location, we loaded everything up, and then discovered that we could not close the door at all. There was no rope hanging down and it was impossible to grab them. Obviously some sort of "checking in" of the trucks needs to improve. read more

Rented a trailer in Northern Ca on October 1st, returned it to White Ln location as instructed on October 2nd. Imagine my surprise when on the 5th, we received notice that our trailer had not yet been returned. I was charged $29.65 for a late fee. After four different phone calls and a total of 53 minutes on the phone, I was issued a refund. The problem all started when we arrived at UHaul and the young woman working the trailer end of the lot was obviously unhappy with our arrival, seems she had to suspend her conversation with a male employee. She was rude and dismissive and apparently didn't feel it necessary to complete our transaction, thus the late fee. I asked if I needed to go to the office for a receipt, she said no, we could just leave. My bad. read more

My initial experience was negative, as my check in through the app wasn't working so I had to wait in line for over an hour. But later the manager or the location called me to apologize for the wait and she even offered a credit of 25.00. I expect that sometimes customer service levels aren't going to be the best for various reasons, but for Nicole, the Manager to recognize this and make it right was all anyone can expect.
