This place is garbage. Unhelpful people on the phone, will not make changes to your reservation even though the website says you can make changes. Says making changes 'breaks your contract'. Why would I be wasting my time on the phone trying to make changes if I was planning on breaking my contract? Save time and money, hire a moving company. read more

Cody the manager is fantastic. He's a one man show most of the time because he doesn't have enough staff, and that's out of his control. Please remember these are people too. All the negative reviews are understandable due to each experience but come on people you can only do your job if you are provided with the proper tools. That comes from above. It's frustrating at times yes, because that location is so busy and they are under staffed, however that doesn't all fall on the manager. I find the employees they have very pleasant and easy to work with. My husband and I rented for several days and weeks in a row for about 3-4 months this summer and they always took care of us, I would definitely recommend them. Patience is something we tend to forget, because we are all so busy and in constant go mode, but it's something we should remember. No way they should have one person working on a weekend. If someone doesn't show up to work, the owner ought to be hustling in. I chose the express online checkout option. After that experience taking fifteen minutes (they took 10 minutes to verify my ID matches a picture I took), I had to wait 25 minutes in line to get a key only to find my truck was blocked in. 15 minutes later, I was on my way. Originally went to this U-Haul to have a hitch installed. Didn't call, or set it up over their web site, actually went in to make the appointment for the hitch. On the day of the install, the manager (who does the installation) was late, and then rescheduled for a different day because he didn't have all the parts necessary. On the rescheduled day, again the manager was late and still didn't have all the necessary parts and said he couldn't find the parts he needed anywhere. As stated in some other reviews, the parking lot is small and hard to maneuver in. read more

Reserved a truck. $19.95 + $10.00 insurance, online. At this time, they put a $69.00 hold on my card to hold the reservation. Next day, picked up the truck, had it for 4 hours, brought it back & received my final bill of $43.00. St. Johns double charged me by billing me my credit hold & a separate bill for the actual rental. I tried to clear tbis up with the Manager, his final wird to mr was they did not see it on there end. I had to go through my Bank to clear it up. I would never trust this company, nor will i ever do Business with them again. read more

I should start off this review by saying that it is specifically for the U-Haul of St. Johns location. I have had nightmare scenarios with U-Haul as a national corporation in the past, and was looking for any other option for a recent move from Portland back to SF. Don't get me started on the month-long delay caused by U-Haul when we moved from NYC to Portland two years ago.... Unfortunately U-Haul has the best network of locations and it was the most convenient company for the move from Portland to SF that I just did. In anticipation of problems I reserved a 10' truck two weeks in advance, knowing that when you make a reservation with U-Haul it's not always locked in. So of course a little less than 48 hours before my truck pick up I get an email from U-Haul reminding me to schedule my truck pick up. I went to the link and it said there were no 10' trucks available in the Portland area on the day I had originally reserved it for... I'm not sure if this is to "forcibly" upsell customers into a larger and more expensive truck (the system said only 14' trucks and larger were available), but right away the next morning (the day before my original reservation) I went to U-Haul of St. Johns to verify the situation. I was panicked because I was nervous enough driving a 10' truck by myself for 12 hours; I did not want to have to drive an even bigger beast. I'm not sure if he's the franchise branch owner or the branch manager, but when we went in to check out the situation he knew who I was and that I had a 10' truck reservation for the following day. He assured me that he was personally going to get the 10' one-way truck that afternoon and I had nothing to worry about. He even called U-Haul central command or whatever it is and made sure my reservation was confirmed in U-Haul's system, which was also reassuring because they were trying to tell him I had changed the reservation (I didn't). He also called me that afternoon to let me know the 10' truck was there at U-Haul of St. Johns and that I had nothing to worry about, which I totally appreciated. He went over all the details with me and told me about the Multnomah County tax that they add on to make sure I wasn't shocked when picking up the truck the next day. He's a really nice guy and customer oriented. I guess your overall U-Haul experience depends on the individual locations you deal with, and U-Haul of St. Johns is by far the best U-Haul branch I've ever dealt with (and that's coming from someone who has done several grueling cross-country moves). I wish all U-Haul branches could be this good. It really took a lot of stress out of a very stressful move. read more

So last weekend I finally decided to rent a small trailer in order to haul some construction scraps to the dump. You know, the same ones that have been lying around the back yard since I moved in? Yeah, those ones. Since they're right in my 'hood I figured I'd try this U-Haul location, and I'm glad I did. I was really impressed with their customer service- I called on a Friday afternoon, and just a couple minutes later had a trailer reserved for the next morning. The cost was very reasonable at about $19 for 24 hours. They were fairly busy when I arrived Saturday morning around 10 AM, but the store manager was literally running to help everyone. I needed to purchase a hitch ball mount, hitch ball, and wiring connection adapter in order to tow with my vehicle, and luckily this U-Haul had a good selection of those items. As I expected, they tend to cost a few dollars more here than they do at a big box hardware store, but sometimes the convenience of being able to get everything in one place is worth paying a little more. Many people won't know exactly what they'll need to equip their vehicle to tow anyway; if that's the case for you, the guys here can help. Whether you just need a ball mount or whether you need a complete trailer hitch and wiring harness installed, they'll hook you up... pun intended. The little trailer I rented ended up working perfectly. Since it was light enough to roll around by hand, I was able to unhook it from my vehicle and maneuver it right into a convenient spot for loading... which was great, because apparently my backing up with a trailer skills have gotten a bit rusty. The end result, my yard is looking cleaner than ever before; and renting the trailer was so easy and inexpensive that if I need to do it again in the future I won't procrastinate for two years... read more

guy at the counter had the worst customer service ever the most crazy thing i've ever experienced. complained i didn't make a reservation ahead of time and complained about it being the busiest day of the week. said he gets paid salary with a customer ahead of me so obviously he is a manger or something, so why are you complaining? you made the schedule idiot? cussed and started pressing the keyboard all aggressive when the system wasn't working properly, like dude chill out it is not that serious you work at a uhaul. don't come here, if your planning to move if this place is your only option, cancel the entire move and just stay at your current place. the guy that takes the vehicle when you drop it off is nice tho read more

Got there at 7:15, the store was locked and the woman working outside couldnt possibly help out for another 10 minutes cause she was busy "doing something else". Absolutely do not shop at this location!! They completely messed up scheduling a wiring harness. Scheduled me at different locations for different prices. Charged my card without my authorization. Couldn't find me in the system after my card was charged and I called to ask about it. And then denied that they had ever scheduled me in the first place. Even though I got a confirmation email and THEY CHARGED MY CARD. The manager Cody was so rude and a nightmare to work with. Avoid this location!!! read more

Got a tow hitch installed on my BMW X5. Super simple, took about an hour, painless. Already put it to use, held up like a champ.

Did not rent from here by choice. Originally chose the U-Haul off Columbia Blvd. but due to complications beyond their control, U-Haul of St. John's was the next closest option. The parking lot is terrible. When I asked if I could leave my car where it was, I was told that I had to move it to street parking. The attendant would have rather been anywhere else (she was watching a cooking video on computer and looking through all her selfies on her personal phone). I told her I had reserved a "9' van" and she told me they didn't have those. I corrected myself and said cargo van and got an eye roll like I was an idiot for calling it something else, although the name of the vehicle is a "9' cargo van" so...? Came back later to return the van, at the same time as someone was returning a 10' truck and we were backed up into the street. Ran in to ask if they could move a parked van and was told they were helping a customer, "which takes a minute so hold on." The other attendant (same one from this morning) who was sitting down held out a hand for my key and told me to have a nice day without any other info. Very unwelcoming and rude on an already stressful day. read more

Unfortunately I had to rent twice in a week, and I gave them the benefit of the doubt after the first shady experience. I won't make that mistake again. Not only was I checked out late and therefore overcharged $37 on the first day, after handing the keys to the manager before my checkout time, but when I called to let them know the next day, the two staff I spoke with told me that they could not help me, that the manager did not have a cell number (which I later discovered he had - on his business card), and he did not call me for the next 6 hours that he supposedly was just on lunch for, to return shortly. When I returned in person the next day to rent again (super close to my house, again, wanting to give them a second chance) he did not apologize, but told me he would give me credit for the $37 when I returned the van that time - and that if he wasn't in the store, the staff who would be present, could help me, having made a note on my contract with his initials for them to see. Not surprisingly when I returned the truck, the two staff there said they could not help me, and one said 'I don't want to bother him with another call on his day off' (mind you he was working that morning). Only when I made it clear that I was not leaving without a.) my total for that day calculated - and properly this time, and b.) the return of my money from the first day, did they call him and he fixed it, within 10 minutes. Made an appointment to have trailer hitch installed, was told that it would be no problem to have it back by noon if we drop it in the morning. We arrived to leave the car, and there was only one person working and when I said we had an appointment to put a hitch installed, the employee looked shocked and annoyed and said "Today?!" And "You know you are dropping it off and picking it up at the end of the day, right!?" I told him we called and were told we could have the car by noon, he said that was not possible. I purchased a tow package online and within 10 minutes, I received a call from Cliff to set up an appointment to have it installed the following day. I went in, he told me it would take approximately two hours to install, I left to wait and they called me because it was finished early! Fast, friendly and professional. I was making a big move across the country and wanted to tow a trailer with my car. However, getting a hitch for my car was more of a hassle then I realized it would be. The call center at U-haul messed it up several times. Then finally, Bill, the manager of this U-Haul in st. johns called me and figured it all out. It's a long story but at the end of the day, he got me a truck and tow for my car with plenty of miles and time to make it across the country! He went out of his way to do everything possible to take care of me. He worked all of his crazy magic to get me where I needed to go in for the right price. Before this big move, I have rented from them several times and it's been the same thing, great customer service and very very knowledgeable staff! This place is terrible! I walked in to pick up a trailer after the main line I called said they have two trailers that I can rent one way. When I walked in the guy said he doesn't rent trailers. I asked if "your business is renting trailers, what are you talking about?" He said he wasn't in the mood to rent trailers today. When I told him the main line directed me to his store he said "well they are idiots and I'm not renting trailers for one way." Not only was the guy rude but just disrespectful. Maybe he treats local renters better but I won't find out anytime soon. I'll never rent from here and I suggest you avoid this place too! read more

Went online to make an appointment to have a tow hitch installed on our 2015 Subaru at this location, which allowed me to not only indicate my exact vehicle model but also pick a specific time and day, along with indicate either drop off or have them do the work as I waited - I picked the latter. Showed up right on time for my appointment and the guy didn't seem to have any idea that I was coming in, and the first thing he said was "you do know that this is an all-day drop off?" and I said no, and repeated what I had requested on the website (why would you make a specific 11 a.m. appointment "while I wait" if they weren't going to actually try to do the work around 11 a.m.?), and he said the website is wrong and he wasn't even going to be able to get to my car for a couple of hours. Since I was not in the position to sit around and wait for several hours just for him to get started, nor be without my car for the entire day, I asked him if he could simply call me when he's done with the two cars ahead of me and I would bring it back since he said the actual installation of a tow hitch is very quick. He then said he would not be able to do that which makes no sense. Along with that, he said that the website picked the wrong wiring for my vehicle (not something I have any control over because the website picks it for you based on your vehicle model and year). I then asked for a refund and he got on the phone and started calling other locations (not telling me what he was doing, just picking up the phone), rather than simply process the refund. Again I had to ask him to process the refund which he finally did. While it's not his fault personally for the company website and the branch location having a horrible system, he could have easily made this right by simply agreeing to give me a call when he was close to being done with the other two cars, so that I could come back and wait while he installed my tow hitch. His defense was that he could not predict how long something like this would take... even though minutes earlier he said it was a very quick job! The fact of the matter is you don't make an appointment for a specific time only to find out you're going to not have access to your car for an entire DAY. Lots of companies make appointments, and this just shows me not only does U-Haul as a company not care about being truthful on their website, but those at the branches aren't motivated (or empowered?) to do right by the customer when these deceptions occur. Not only will we not be getting a tow hitch installed with U-Haul, we will not be using any of their relocation services either for our upcoming move. read more

Horrifying experience. Jeff didn't finish the job he was PAID for. Jeff left the breaking system for our trailer on the ground & told my wife she could install it herself because she was being "rude." Never a swear word, never a named called, not even an insult. After three visits to install a hitch, wiring & breaking system (which should have been done in a SINGLE visit) it's still not complete. Our plans for camping this weekend might be over because JEFF the MANAGER was unwilling to finish a job he's been paid for. Jeff seems to think his response was appropriate, I spoke with him, but corporate was equally horrified as I shared the story with them, even escalating the concern for prompt attention. INSTALL IT HERSELF, JEFF THE MANAGER, THE MANAGER, actually said that to not only my wife but to me when I called to inquire about a resolution. Jeff was not interested in a resolution, but I'll bet CORPORATE is!!!! read more

there were some miss-haps when i arrived, and the unit i had reserved wasn't reachable due to an elevator outage. the staff was super helpful however. Murissa spent a lot of time making sure they found a comparable unit that was reachable and honored the quote i had been given, which was super cool. moving can be very stressful. it is awesome when the staff at a storage place gets that and is flexible and honorable. you can tell the most about a business not when everything goes perfectly, but when something goes wrong! and they handled the situation super professionally. read more
