The town of Sewall's Point is located on Sewall's Peninsula which was named for Henry Sewall who…read moreonce owned it. Sewall came to the area with his wife in 1889. He built a home, a post office, and a dock that everyone who was traveling the Indian River north or south stopped at. During the turn of the century settlers came to the area and built homes out of salvaged lumber from shipwrecks. In the 1940's trailer parks started popping up in the area. In response to the development, the Sewall's Point Association was created in the 1950's to control the zoning on the peninsula and keep it a residential community. Efforts were led by Dr. Elvin Killheffer who became the towns first mayor when the town of Sewall Point received it's charter on June 12, 1957. At 3 and a 1/2 miles long and 1/3 mile wide, the town situated between the St. Lucie River and the Indian River Lagoon might be easy to miss. 850 homes make up the town, 150 of which are waterfront making it one of the most desired communities in Martin County. One block has restaurants and businesses and the rest of the town is residential streets. The town has 13 employees, mainly police and the building department. The town hall is located across the street from the only park, Sewall's Commons. Houses that have deeper water docks can sell for $10 million although older homes from the 1970's can be had for around $300,000. Today 80 percent of the town residents live there full time and many are young professionals and families. Residents of Sewall's Point enjoy close proximity to the beach, good schools, and a low crime rate making it one of the premier communities in the Treasure Coast.
