Second trip to London we took the London underground from Heathrow to Holborn all along the Piccadilly line without transferring. 23 stops along the line but we we were seated the entire time carrying day packs and one carry-on luggage each.. The cost was the equivalent of $7 per person. If you are coming from Heathrow airport during rush hour you can take the Heathrow Express directly from the airport too Paddington station. For two people this would be about the same Fare as Uber. And you would still have to get from Paddington station to your central London hotel. In our case we could have taken the Elizabeth Express from Heathrow airport to Tottenham Court road station and walked the mile to our hotel near Holborn underground station. The fair would have been about double that of the London underground. Both of the Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line are more luggage friendly. Compared to the London underground. The London underground has contactless payment. You simply scan your credit card on entry and scan the same credit card on exit. Seats seats are cloth with armrest. People with oversized luggage can put your luggage near the doors in special areas. is not advised during peak hours was standing room only. Unlike New York City most London stations have working escalators making it possible, but not easy, to carry luggage on the trains. Make sure you put your luggage on its side. One person put his luggage on his wheels in the luggage area but the luggage rolled out the entrance on its own at the next stop.

London Underground is an excellent model of public transportation. We used it to get to and from…read morethe airport from Paddington Station, which was near our hotel. London Underground is certainly cheaper than a taxi or uber, and we had no problems finding room on the trains with our luggage (two people, each with a carry on). Announcements remind you to "mind the gap", and the stations we visited were staffed and welcoming. One even had an inspirational quote up. As expected, some stations are more modern than others since they are utilized more. I loved that I could tap my credit card to get through the gates onto the train, rather than buying a physical card or downloading an app. I wish the DC Metro used this system.

We travelled on the Uber River Bus from Tate Modern to Royal Victoria. Our intent was to see London…read morefrom the Thames and enjoy the boat ride. Our experience was meh. The use of credit card to tap on and off is easy. We waited for two boats to pass before we could board because boats were full. Our wait was about 30 minutes. On a rainy day, it was hard to see much once onboard. The windows are a bit foggy. The seats are comfortable and the on board cafe is a nice touch for coffee. The ride is smooth and relaxing. The ride was ok but we decided to return via Tube as the trip is easier and quicker. I think the ride could be lovely on a sunny day. I can't imagine using the boats for needed transportation since boarding time is unpredictable.

Extremely busy at the docking areas so give yourself and added 20 minutes at each location. Each boat provides a wine and beer bar with vegan muffins and other small snacks. Today we boarded at The Eye and traveled up the river to Greenwich to party in the market area. Boarded again the river bus and traveled back to the Embankment pier to continue our exhausting day at Tattershall Castle.

Very large and busy station close to the Borough Market, London Bridge, and within walking distance…read moreto many attractions such as the Tower Bridge, The Shard, etc. I took the Jubilee line here when arriving in town to run the London Marathon as our hotel was close by. The Northern line also runs through here. This station goes pretty deep and good thing the escalators worked! Also, tap and pay was easy here. It was a main station for the marathon runners to board and head to the start line area. Its one of the oldest stations dating back to the 1830's. There are now some current businesses here to grab a coffee and bite to eat. Can be a bit confusing to navigate for some as its massive and winding so make sure you know where you're going.

Mansion House is a tube station in the City of London. It is on the Circle and District Lines, and…read morethe station is a short walk away from central London attractions, including St Paul's Cathedral and Cannon Street. The history of the station dates back to its opening in 1871. The station is steps only, I'm afraid - no step-free access here. It acts as an OSI with Blackfriars Station nearby, which has National Rail services. I found the station easy to navigate despite having multiple entrances and exits. The signage inside is clear and well-placed, making it easy to figure out which exit to use for specific streets or attractions. However, the subway tunnel connecting these exits left much to be desired. It felt poorly maintained, dimly lit, and dirty, and you could see cardboard boxes and litter everywhere. It also looks like it's being used as a sleeping area for homeless individuals. I didn't feel safe walking through this space, and I presume this may be why certain entrances and exits are closed at specific times. For a busy central London station popular with commuters and tourists, the state of this area was disappointing and felt inappropriate. The platform area, however, was rather standard. 3* - Handy location but they need to do something about the tunnel as a matter of urgency otherwise I'd prefer to use Blackfriars.

Well, there are two things about this station that I should mention, the first is that it closes…read morepretty early, but that is probably because Cannon Street is a short walk up the street, or a run if you are attempting to do the tube challenge. For those who don't know, this was the station that some dude got off to prove that he could literally run faster than the tube, namely by getting off here, and getting back on the exact same train at Cannon Street (I could probably do that in Melbourne, but I bet that I don't even have to run to do that). Still, the fact that it closes early is still quite annoying.

I was going to say that this was as far west as you could get on the DLR, but you can actually get…read moreonto it at Bank Stations. So, well, this is basically a spur, and as it turns out it is a quite annoying one as well because you can't get to Canary Wharf from here without interchanging. Anyway, it's okay, but it is also rather new, well relatively new with all things consider. In fact, I get the impression that they basically wanted to build a public transport line on the cheap, and came up with the DLR. Still, it gets you close to the Tower of London, it is just a shame that it doesn't interchange with the tube.

In terms of overall design and layout, Tower Gateway is one of my favourite DLR stations, the…read morebuilding stands out with the dome, not forgetting the central location which is overlooking the Tower of London. The location is also good as it is close to Fenchurch Street (National Rail) and Tower Hill (London Underground), which allows you to continue your journey from beyond the East London of the DLR. There are also bus services that stop outside the station, including the 343 which runs between New Cross Gate and Aldgate, via London Bridge. The station has both lifts and stairs from the street to platform level, the layout is pretty easy to follow. It is the terminus of the line towards Lewisham, Beckton or Woolwich Arsenal. The first stop from this station is always Shadwell. 4* - As far as DLR stations go, this station is visually appealing, it did appear to be unstaffed so could be a little difficult at first for a tourist, but it is pretty easy to get your head around after a while.

Borough is one of the handful of stations south of the Thames, on the Northern Line between Elephant & Castle and London Bridge in Travelcard Zone 1. Like some deep stations, Borough does not have stairs for reaching street level, instead has lifts ("elevators" in American). I would suspect that they get just as crowded as the Tube does on busy days. It's called deodorant, people. Try it sometime. Other than that, a nice enough station.

Bermondsey (I'm not going to try to tell you how it's pronounced) is one of the few stations south…read moreof the Thames. It's on the Jubilee Line, between London Bridge and Canada Water. It is in Travelcard Zone 2. Because it was only opened in 1999, it is a modern station and has step-free access from the street to the platform level. Like other Jubilee stations, it has the platform edge doors. It's a surprisingly airy and modern station, with high ceilings and quite a bit of natural light even down on the platforms.

The thing that I really like about this station is that the platforms sit on a bridge that crosses…read morethe Thames, and there are entrances to the station at either side. The Thameslink basically stops here, and my previous treks here I didn't realise that you could use the Oyster Card to not just access the station, but also catch the trains from here as well, which I have to admit is actually pretty cool.
