Five stars for the convenience, three stars because of the price -- averaged together, that makes a solid four stars for the Heathrow Express train! This is by far the most convenient option from London proper to Heathrow Airport, but you'll pay for that convenience. Where you could reach the airport via a local train for much less, shell out the 20 - 25 pounds per person and you can ride on a direct train with zero stops. The train runs nonstop from Paddington Station, which is easily accessible by Tube. It leaves roughly every 15 to 30 minutes, but there are frequently closures and delays so make sure you allow plenty of time for your journey. In the 4 times I've used this service, twice it's been cancelled and I had to take the regular local train, so be aware. The train stops at Heathrow but the walk from the station to the terminal is quite far (allow at least 20 minutes, and even longer if you are slow or have a ton of bags). Also make SURE that you keep your ticket out because you have to scan in AND out once you reach LHR station. The train itself is nothing fancy, but they have free wi-fi and luggage racks for the short journey. The seats are comfy enough. They often run specials, so make sure you check our their website. I initially planned to take an airport shuttle from Heathrow to my hotel in Kings Cross, however I changed my mind at the last minute and purchased a round trip ticket online the day before my trip. The journey from Heathrow to Paddington is only 15 minutes and trains run every 15 minutes. An advantage with taking the train is that it allows for flexibility. I purchased an Express (Standard) Class ticket and was able to use the first ticket within 5 days of the specified date. The ticket could be used any time of day. The return ticket could be used within 30 days of the specified date. They also have a Business Class option if you're wanting some extra amenities. Some airline credit cards offer upgrades to Business Class, so check the website for more info. Oyster cards can also be used to pay for the train which I didn't realize at the time. The train car was very spacious and clean. The train is equipped with free wi-fi and outlets. There was plenty of room for large luggage too. Once I arrived at Paddington, I followed the signs for the taxis and took a cab from Paddington to Kings Cross. The price for a one way Standard Class ticket remains £25 each way. If I have the opportunity to revisit London, I would take the Heathrow Express again. The Heathrow Express may seem extravagant when now there is the Elizabeth Line, but you are paying for convenience, non stop service between LHR and Paddington. You are on the same platform as Elizabeth Line at LHR. But when that platform is crowded and you're exhausted from your flight, morning or night, there's nothing better than getting in the Heathrow Express where it's quiet and you practically have the car to yourself. In 15 minutes you are at beautiful Paddington Station. If you booked at their Hilton you are steps away from your room. Book early on their apps for deals. I think it's worth every cent. read more

Gayle and I used the Heathrow Express to and from Heathrow Terminal 3 during our recent trip to the UK. The trip was a quick and efficient as ever, although I'm not sure our 1st Class ticket was worth the cost. Even Coach is a bit pricey, and judging by all the signs and help at Heathrow, this train must really be a money maker. Now now that the fairly new Elizabeth Underground Line offers basically the same route (at Tube pricing), I might have chosen differently in hindsight. This was the worst airport transit experience I've ever had. Starting out, it seemed like a good deal that I had read about. I was wary of the wandering agent at the kiosk being a scammer, but what he said seemed legit. He sold us on a roundtrip ticket and was pretty helpful, assuring us that the train would run when we needed it. We boarded our train into London and it was fast and comfortable, getting to Paddington station in about 15 minutes ahead of the Elizabeth line, which runs on parallel tracks. The luggage racks on the train were small and couldn't handle a lot of luggage if the train were full. I didn't count on having to change underground trains twice to get to our hotel and have to drag luggage up and down stairs and escalators. Our biggest headache was for our return trip. We took a cab to Paddington in the early morning (6:00am) and the station is almost deserted. First train was supposed to be 5:40am. Apparently, there was overnight construction and both the Express and Elizabeth lines were not running until 7:40am and we would miss our flight if we waited. So we had to eat the return ticket and spring for a cab anyway. Never mind I was all sweaty from dragging all our luggage back and forth. I was pissed. Luckily, traffic was light and we made it in time for our flight. If you travel light and your flights are in the middle of the day, the Heathrow Express should work for you. If you have any amount of luggage, just grab a London taxi and go door-to door to save yourself some aggravation and don't listen to the smooth talking sales guy. Now I'm going to have to go after them to refund the price of my return ticket. What a royal pain in the backside! read more

Easy and efficient! Forgo a taxi say 'nay' to taking a bus. Go EXPRESS! This is a super quick, like taking the TARDIS. Time travel is not guaranteed, but it may feel like it the way you get to downtown London in comparison with the a taxi ride. Final stop is Paddington station where you can catch another train or take a jaunt into Hyde Park if you have a few hours to kill between flights. Going back to Heathrow airport, it will take you to Terminals 2, 3, and 5. I recommend buying a round trip ticket because it is cheaper than buying to separate single tickets. read more

Yes it might cost a bit more, but if you book your Heathrow Express tickets once you book your flight then it'll be super cost effective. It gets more expensive the closer it is to the date of transit you need it for. What I liked about the tickets is there is some flex time on them so you have plus/minus seven days of the date you planned to use it for to utilize in case your plans change. The trains were super well kept and very spacious. There were charging docks and since it is more of a premium ticket charge plenty of space for luggage. I couldn't imagine trying to take a taxi or uber from this airport and the cost and time it would be. 100% WORTH IT. read more

While the airport is very easy to navigate, pay attention to the different signs and determine your best mode of transportation. I am going to highly suggest the Heathrow Express, this is the second time I have used it, and this time alone, it's very simple. You will see sales attendants as you exit baggage claim and near the ATM (get some cash while you can) and if you know you are returning via train, get both tickets and save a few dollars. The train is a 15 minute ride into London and stops at Paddington Station, you pick it up at the same location on your return. Where I was located in Hyde Park, was a 45 min-1 hour ride to the airport depending on the traffic, this takes 15 minutes! I didn't use the tube anywhere else, I didn't need to, taxis were everywhere and the ride was about 5 pounds to wherever I was going for the day. So don't hesitate, roll that luggage out of the terminal and follow the signs to the elevator outside of terminal 3 and head on down to the train station, hop on and enjoy! Bought a round trip ticket ahead of arrival. 37£. Train stopped operating day I arrived "for a long while" so made other arrangements. I used it back to Heathrow, and it was easy and sensible. However, when I submitted for refund, I was only given 12£. When I challenged the amount, they asked for my bank information to deposit more. Weird. It whisks you from the airport to Paddington in a quick fifteen minutes. What's not to appreciate about the efficiency and ease of that? Navigating LHR (the airport) to find the Heathrow Express is easy enough. The cost is - as of writing this - £22 per person for a roundtrip ticket in which you can take any time during the date of travel (buy roundtrip, not single, the savings are BIG). When it's not busy, there's enough space on this speedy train to store your luggage near the doors; when it is busy, expect to hold your luggage awkwardly on your lap. There are big clear screens on the train that visually announce where you are on your journey (Paddington Station is the final stop for those of us taking a train for other destinations). And, as others have mentioned, taking the Heathrow Express back to the airport brings you to terminals 2, 3, and 5 (so, for your sake and others, be mindful of which one you need to get off and where you're seated). read more

Wow, so fast and efficient! Took the express to the Heathrow airport and it was so much more effective than the Tube. When I took the Tube, it took around an hour but the express only takes around 15 minutes because there are no stops. There are also multiple trains so it's very accessible. At least at 5 am there were barely any passengers and there are always people there to help you with your tickets. The seats were also extremely comfortable. It's also pretty affordable too, the earlier you buy the ticket the cheaper it is. Also it connects with the Tube. Definitely recommend if you ever need to get from London to Heathrow. read more

Whether it makes financial sense to take the Heathrow Express hinges on a couple of factors: the number of people in your party and where in the city you need to go. Cost: It worked out really well for my girlfriend and me. We took the Heathrow Express from the airport (Terminal 3) to Paddington Station and then a cab to a hotel in Marylebone (The Langham). We bought round trip tickets (£37 each) and the cab ride to the hotel was about £13, which added up to only £50 for a party of two for one way. This is really cost effective given the fact that the cheapest airport transfer the hotel suggested was £155. Time: It only takes 15 minutes from Terminals 2 or 3 to Paddington Station (allow additional several minutes for other terminals). Luckily, we were in the west side of London and close to Paddington Station. The cab ride was only 20 minutes to our hotel. So, it took us less than an hour from the airport to our hotel, including the time to transfer to the cab, which is roughly the same amount of time to travel by car WITHOUT traffic. Verdict: Unless you can get an airport transfer for a low flat rate and/or there are 4 or 5 people in your party, it probably makes financial sense to take the Heathrow Express (and then a taxi). Amenities: The train is new, clean, and well equipped. It's only a 15 minute ride, you can use free wifi. There's an area where you can put large suitcases in each car. Summary: The Heathrow Express makes the airport very accessible. It's a cost efficient and convenient way to travel between the airport and the west side of London. The comfort and convenience is unparalleled. The closest is the Narita Express in Japan, but it takes a much longer time since Narita Airport is far from Tokyo. Pro Tip: Save big by purchasing advance tickets (as low as £5 as opposed to the regular oneway ticket of £25). Unfortunately the App is a big fail - kept crashing when I tried to buy my tix. Then when I tried to use return ticket I had to argue 5 minutes with the staff because the ticket had the same date as my outbound. They advertise 15 minutes - was over 30 with delays. £25 way too much, even with the round trip discount of £37. I read this is the most expensive train service per mile in the world. From the Terminal 2/3 train stop to your international departure gate, it is 6 moving walkways, 4 escalators, and well over a mile. At off peak hours you will wait a while for a train. Then at Paddington you will have to take a tube or a taxi to get to your final destination anyway, increasing your travel time and cost. Look, you can book a London car service transfer online to West London for £55, or £65 with tip. A driver will meet you at Heathrow as you exit customs with a sign with your name on it - grab your luggage for you and carry it next door to the car park, pay the parking, load you into a very nice comfortable black car and drop you right at your destination. No struggling with your bags onto lifts and trains at Heathrow and then again at Paddington, negotiating the tube and then hiking to your hotel. Heathrow Express Train: It was our 1st trip to London & as we followed the sign from the baggage claim area toward the "Trains to Downtown London" we saw a ticket agent who we asked about the Express Train. It is 15-18 minutes to reach downtown Paddington Station with no stops in between, vs over an hour on the regular train options. If you buy return tickets, note that the tickets are marked for outbound vs return since they have different validity dates. My wife ,and I tried this thinking it would be cheaper than a taxi to our family in North London. The train was fine but getting luggage on and off wasn't easy. Then, at Paddington we had to haul luggage up a large stair. The London train tube system is great but again, luggage was a real problem. Some stations have escalators but some don't, sometimes requiring climbing the equivalent of 3 flights of stairs. Usually a taxi/UBER takes an hour to get us from North London to Heathrow and the cost is 60 pounds plus tip. The Heathrow express and tube train took almost 2 hours and cost us a little less than $40 each for a total price of $80 or 65 pounds. Bottom line, unless you have a small amount of luggage don't even consider the Heathrow Express and it is cheaper and faster to take a taxi/cab anyway. read more

£16.50 is a small sum to pay for your sanity. Pass through customs and follow the signs to Heathrow Express; you can buy a ticket en route (and pay for it with a credit card!) I've never waited longer than 10 minutes for a train to London. Once aboard, the total time in transit is 15 minutes. Disembark and you're at Paddington Station, with lots of London at your fingertips. All this, and you didn't have to part with loads of cash on a cab or the stress of trying to figure your way round on the tube. I wish New York City would install a similar system to haul me from Manhattan to JFK in such a posh and speedy manor! Sure, £16.50 ain't cheap but I'd say it's a pretty good value for what you get on Heathrow Express. And I couldn't imagine traveling by any other mode from LHR to central London. read more

Heathrow Express is your FASTEST connection from the airport into Central London. Especially convenient if you're staying at Paddington area which is a major hub for transfers for the underground tube. If you're on an expense account and if you need to get to the West End then Heathrow Express is excellent. If you're on your own money, then perhaps it's not the right choice. I find that it really only saves about 20 minutes over the Piccadilly Line. And if you need to be on Piccadilly, compared to Bakerloo, then the Tube is still a better choice. The few times I've taken the Heathrow Express, it's been when work was paying for it and I needed to be at Paddington. The rest of the time, I'm fine with taking the Underground. No more bad connections, no more fake "free wifi" promises (I'm looking at you Virgin Trains and East Coast Trains!), and no more snail-like page loads. Although it is the fastest link between Heathrow Airport and downtown London, Heathrow Express (HEX) is slammed as the world's most expensive train by cost per mile and was not favored by both pro tourists and locals. Previously, I praised HEX as an affordable choice that is a much more comfortable than the conventional tube option if you book in advance, but after the recent reduction in advanced booking discount, you will splurging a lot more money to choose this formerly the smarter way over the "peasant train" unless you booked extremely in advance. On the positive side, HEX will perhaps be the most comfortable train you will ride: clean, spacious, quick, and free fast Wi-Fi. I am surprised that it's even better than the Eurostar train! The biggest selling point is that the train gets you to central London in 15 minutes: 25% of the time required for the tube. However, HEX is often not recommended because of its staggering one-way regular fare of £22, which is 4 times the tube's peak-time fare (£5.5). Additionally, HEX terminates at Paddington Station, so you need to transfer to the tube, which adds to the already high cost and reduces the speed advantage. If you book early 7-, 14-, 30-, or 90-days in advance, you can get discounted fares especially if you travel on the weekends. However, HEX's advanced discount no longer includes return trip and the discount is significantly reduced. To save you the research and the math, you would have to get the 30-day advanced weekend express saver to even be comparable to the cost of taking the tube if you need to transfer at Paddington.
