Over the last few decades, Brighton's flagship hospital has had so many extensions and new buildings attached to it that it now resembles a maze. I usually go in through the main entrance and find myself leaving an hour later, through a completely different exit on a different level and different wing. I've tried asking porters, nurses, doctors and complete strangers for directions and nine times out of ten, the only directions they can give is to follow the complicated Way Out signs. Of course, I think it's amazing that England still had hospitals like Royal Sussex - where you can go for free treatment, MRI scans, surgery and advice. I'm all for the NHS and health-care for everyone. I'd just like someone, somewhere to design a decent, colour-coded guide and some clear signage that allows people to navigate their way through Royal Sussex.

However, having been put off by Queen Alexandra's Hospital in Portsmouth by their lack of physical tour (you have to get by with a substandard YouTube video), and also feedback from others that it was a busy hospital and somewhat akin to a sausage machine (I had one story of someone being in and out in 12 hours - and they didn't necessarily want to be processed so quickly), I decided to opt for Chichester. It was the right choice - indeed quieter, albeit a bit older looking, but still fit for purpose. This maternity ward is very well run, the midwife was very good and I got the epidural that I wanted (needed!) for my third baby. I would definitely recommend this hospital to any nervous mums. Getting the tour and having a chance to ask questions and familiarize oneself with the layout was really helpful in orientating me to the NHS way and allaying any fears/answering questions. My only pick up point was infant security. As I left the hospital the receptionist let me swan out - no outgoing checks, no bracelet checking, no escort to the door, nothing. It made me wonder what the protocol was should there be an attempted baby theft...

We tried all the 4 or 5 car parks and there is also very limited space on roads near the hospital. Bus services in Haywards Heath are practically non existent, so no help there either. Looking at the map, a lovely porter stopped and directed us and then a man in a light green shirt, just asked us where we were going, and practically took us there. All the staff we met, were friendly and professional. We arrived 15 minutes early, and got seen in 5.... What a great hospital, keep up the good work!

I had to see a specialist here today a few months after i wrote this review. the care i received was excellent and the staff i met jolly and helpful. however the toilets in reception were still not up to standard. the disabled one and a cubicle in the ladies were out of order. Out patients 2 and the pharmacy were lovely and clean. There is even a tv in the pharmacy now to pass the time. It is a good hospital but the cleanliness in the loos worry me especially as they have had MRSA outbreaks.

My husband and I ended up here at about 11pm after I had not been feeling well. The wait was quite…read morelong and we were finally seen at around 2:45 am- the wait, although long, was not unpleasant nor unexpected. I was seen by a sweet Doctor that (although clearly busy and slightly rushed) was attentive. Overall a pleasant experience (as much as visiting and Emergency room can be).
