The Luke is a historic theater at Santa Barbara Jr High School with lots of parking a large lobby area. I've attended church services, award ceremonies local dance productions, lectures, symphonies, operas, folklorico performances, etc. at The Luke. The Luke hosts many local groups, which I love, but also brings national and international groups to Santa Barbara. There is always something new and interesting happening at The Luke. The Luke was recently renovated, but still has a vintage feel. It's a gorgeous theater and very comfortable. By request, you can tour the theater and see the ins and outs of The Luke. I was able to go on a tour hosted by the house manager himself and had no idea of the fascinating history of The Luke. I would highly recommend this tour.

My experience from speaking to the representatives at Will Call to saying hello to the cast members at the end was beyond fantastic! Everyone I encountered was ever so friendly. The theater in itself is beautiful, the seats are comfy, everything is fairly new, or at least well-kept and modern. Snack stand available during intermission and prices are very fair. Restrooms located downstairs, plentiful and clean. I would happily come watch another production at the Garvin!

The Garvin Theatre was the perfect size for this production. Each seat in the theatre had full view of the stage with great props for the time period of the play. The comedy "In the Next Room made you laugh with the introduction of the vibrator and how and why it was administered. As the story unfolded sad moments occurred with character "Elizabeth" who was hired to nurse another woman's baby after the death of her own baby. Each character in the play had an awesome performance and the costumes were amazing; especially the details in the female's garments.

From The Independent we learned of the SB Dance Center's $7 dance lesson and practice party afterward and decided to give it a shot. The Center is spacious with a nice-sized lobby for chit-chat, and two generous ballrooms with good fans and nice art. Class was surprisingly well-attended for a rainy Saturday night and we were treated to a Charleston/Lindy Hop lesson. I've been Lindy Hopping since '98 (damn I'm old!) but I appreciated the refresher. Our fellow dancers were from a variety of backgrounds and ages, and all were kind and friendly, exactly the wholesome type you encounter at a swing dance. The instructors did a nice job incorporating the basics for all the beginners and even tossed in a couple of more advanced moves for those of us long-time lindy hoppers. We stayed after for the practice dance, and although it was initially weird getting asked to dance (and asking guys to dance again!) it was super fun and I know Chun P. wouldn't mind. Every Saturday night the Center offers a different type of dance lesson, and I'm looking forward to dropping by for a dance and seeing my new friends on my next trip!

As a gay-identifying cis male, we unfortunately do not have a designated GLBT bar to be ourselves. While I would like to say that the days of needing a "safe space" to mix and mingle with others in the community--like a gayborhood--are behind us, sadly it is difficult living in a town without such a venue; even in a fairly liberal, Californian college town. Thankfully there is the adjacent Little Kitchen and Bobcat Room+The Wildcat Lounge (often referred to as "The Shitty Kitty" by locals not only a play on its name, but also due to being one of the latest closing establishments on Lower State's nightlife scene where folks get sh*tfaced). Since right before the start of COVID, they kicked off a weekly Sunday Glitter Brunch. SUNDAY GLITTER BRUNCH is a collaboration of Drag Queens--often led by local MCs Vivian Storm and Angel D'mon--with visiting performers from the far stretches of Los Angeles, cocktails by the Wildcat Lounge, and brunch service by The Little Kitchen. Sure, the food is decent yet overpriced fare. Yes, the drinks aren't as stiff as the average Santa Barbara cocktail for the price (though where else can you get a brightly colored pink drink like The Snap-Pea?!). The venue is outdoors on a patio and parking lot/alleyway with a hodgepodge of furniture. Let's be honest, one comes here to let down their hair, throw some shade, and find their inner singing/dancing diva! At this, the Glitter Brunch triumphs!! I was stoked to see that the Glitter Brunch survived and often sells out post-pandemic! I think we all just needed to get out of our homes and shells to socialize as humans are meant to. The venue still manages to take all health precautions seriously. There is hand sanitizer readily available, socially distanced seating arrangements, masked workers AND performers. So comfortable and safe that I came here with my beloved mother, sister and best friend before vaccines were readily available. And truthfully, the only things "unsanitized" were Vivian Storm's mouth and Angel D'mon's dresses... :X Sorry, not sorry! All in all, everyone has a fabulous time singing in sync (or not), grooving, and drinking to reincarnated, talented divas from the past. In all honesty, it was just what the doctor had ordered for our sanity. Please continue to support this establishment, this (almost) weekly show on Sunday afternoons and these hardworking drag queens!
