I was craving sushi while in Tulum but honestly should've known better. My friend and I got two rolls and an eel hand roll. The sushi rolls were basic, nothing special but nothing amazing. The eel hand roll had bones... SO SO MANY BONES. I LOVE unagi and could not finish it because of the amount of bones they left behind. This has never, I mean never happened with me and unagi anything before. Not only this but as soon as we sat down we were ATTACKED by mosquitos. I know we're in the jungle and every night we got a few bites here and there. But this was something new. I felt like hundreds of pins were stabbing into me from the second I sat down. My friend and I each left with at least 10+ bites each (which turned into welts) despite the restaurant providing bug spray and bringing a bug repellent pot/smoke right next to us. I don't know why all the bugs concentrated here but it was hard for us or any of the neighboring people eating to enjoy the meal. Also, a day after I ate here (with nothing in between but bottled water), I became violently sick. I'm talking throw up at the airport sick and then a week in bed when I got home. Freaking fantastic sushi and the rock shrimp tacos and octopus tacos were the stuff of dreams. Tasting menu is worth it as they upsold us and included 2 rounds of cocktails. This is some of the best sushi in town. A lot of what you get here is Mexisushi where they put cream cheese inside. Yuck. Ukami has great rolls without the nasty stuff. They have an AYCE sushi deal, their portions are great and the sushi actually looks like sushi!!! Super wonderful. The cat with the beads is one of my favorite things to look at. The place is run by Spencer who really takes care of you - since it's his place! I would highly recommend omakase experience where he will keep feeding you not only sushi with amazing Mayan flavors on what i call a 'sushi catwalk' (see photo), but also a plethora of appetizers with flavors and accents one can not describe in a post. After eating at all the famed joints in Tulum for two weeks, we decidedly rate Ukami our top choice in terms of food quality, ingenuity and price. I was in Tulum on vacation and decided to come here on my last night. It was AMAZING! The ambience was really nice and the food was delicious. I ordered the passion fruit margarita and it came in a shark cup (so cute)! I recommend the Arigato roll which has to be the best thing I've ever eaten! The Spicy Edamame and Famous Rock Shrimp Taco were 10/10. I wish I remember everything we ate but everything we ordered was great! I wish my stomach was bigger so I could have ordered more. We weren't planning on eating Japense food in Mexico, but a few of our friends watched a bunch of YouTube videos about Japense food at our air bnb and started to crave it- so we ended up here for dinner one night! Best decision ever. This restaurant is a Japanese-Mayan (Mayapanese) fusion and was absolutely delicious. The sushi rolls and bowls were very unique and tasty. The drinks were amazing as well. The ambiance is very hip and chill. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming! Our server was very attentive and always made sure we were doing well. I have never written a Yelp review before, but I felt compelled to say how amazing the sushi, drinks and service was at Ukami sushi last night. I have been fortunate to eat at some amazing sushi bars including Matsuhisha, Nobu and Sushi Gen in LA along with Nick San in Cabo, and Ukami is in their class! We had a group of 12 people and ordered a modified Omakase menu and everything was fantastic! Bruno and his team went out of their way to make sure that we had a magical night! The watermelon jalapeño margaritas are fabulous, the spicy salmon tostadas and rock shrimp tacos were amazing as were all of the sashimi selections with sauces that offered a tropical twist to high quality fresh fish. We finished the meal off with some high end tequila shots and a desert of deep fried cream cheese and caramel that was to die for! My only regret was that this was our last night in Tulum so we couldn't come back againbut we will for sure on our next visit! There are a lot of amazing restaurants on this strip along the beach in Tulum, and Ukami is one that you should not miss! read more

What can I say? This is the best sushi restaurant in Tulum. No question about it. We went to Tora (good and fun), Kokoro (over rated), the restaurant in Togo (very good but quiet), and Funky Geisha. My girlfriend and I visited Ukami on new years eve. Upon making my reservation on open table no where did it say that it would be a fixed menu. So when we arrive the waiter informs us that we have to order omakase. Which was shocking and even more shocking was that we had to have all you can drink . So we decided to stay the omakase comes all good. I was enjoying the sushi and the drinks until when the couple next to us comes and is given a menu which we were told we could not have! Upon seeing this i let the owner know and he bullshits with me for a few minutes saying how the waiter did not know. The waiter even told my girlfriend that we would have champagne at midnight. So midnight rolls around and we come to find that they were serving Martinellis instead of champagne! Overall it was pathetic how little ethics the ownership of the restaurant have. read more
