A unique and down to earth Mayan-Japanese experience! The staff were very welcoming and clearly loved the food they serve. My husband and I (and all the other guests in the restaurant that night, I observed) ordered the Omakase - a prix-fixe ($129 per 2 people) long wood board of the chef's best offerings including sushi rolls, sashimi, the shrimp tacos, fried wontons, and a few others. All were delicious. The vibe of the place is cozy but lively, waiters dancing and people celebrating various occasions but not at all crowded on a weekday night. 10 out of 10, or whatever the highest rating is! We were staying across the street at Coco Unlimited (a wonderful hotel, by the way), and we were tired and hungry after a very long day of travel. The concierge suggested Ukami, and it was close, so we strolled over. I was intrigued by the menu, and though my wife loves Mexican food, Asian food is generally lower on her list of favorites. However, our 14-year-old daughter can sometimes by a picky eater, so her willingness to give it a try sealed the deal. We were greeted by Spencer, one of the owners, who was a fabulous host and made us feel very welcome. It was obvious he took great pride in his restaurant, and deservedly so. Everything about the place was wonderful: the music, the décor, the ambience, the service, and of course the most important part, the food. We tried the Taka Taka; Yakimeshi Mixto (with shrimp); Teppanyaki (with salmon); and the famous Rock Shrimp Taco. The tacos can be ordered traditional style, with a crispy corn shell, or the "Chef's special," which is served in fried rice paper. Order a traditional, if you must, but you absolutely have to try the Chef's Special too (you will not be sorry!). We ate at a few other restaurants in Tulum, and they were fine, but Ukami was our favorite, by far. So much so, we actually returned two more times before we (sadly) had to leave, and my daughter announced that it was her favorite restaurant, ever! went to spend a day on the beach in tulum and read somewhere about ukami . the hours on yelp say they open at 1 but they do not . it opens at 4pm (at least on sundays ) ... got a large selection of sushi and sashimi from this nice little spot. tuna sashimi was top notch fully sauced up . the gyoza stuffed with yuca were really good as well. i ordered the nigiri 6 types platter . the sauces and fish were very good . ordered the pulpo taco and my oh my what a good small bite ! overall a great sushi spot . very tulum style dining spot. average to above average prices . would definitely recommend to friends that are visiting tulum . high praise to KAI (sp?)our server . not sure if i spelled his name right but he's the london bloke server . read more

Food was solid. Octopus was great. Service and speed was fine. Waiter was a nice guy. The bill came with a proposed 20% tip but the group decided 15% made more sense, based on a few smaller issues. The manager or owner came over and tried to intimidate us to pay more. He was clearly "El Patron". He asked if we wanted to pay the bill or not pay the bill. It felt like he was trying to sucker us into an altercation. Then he did the classic bully technique "is there a problem"? and then said something like "have a good night and please keep your pretty blonde female friend alive". My group was a little freaked out. I couldn't imagine anything really happening but it seemed a little heavy handed over a difference in opinion on tip amount. read more

All the rolls were great and the quality of the fish was amazing. For drinks we got a spicy margherita and the passion fruit margherita. The passion fruit margherita I would highly recommend!! Although it is in the street it is a very comfortable ambiance. The staff is so friendly- the waitress that we had in particular was very approachable and helpful. My boyfriend and I stopped by Ukamj on our last night in Tulum. We live in NYC and eat A LOT of Sushi, so we figured we would try it out since the fish was probably super fresh (which it definitely was). I also found it extremely reasonably priced we got appetizers, three large rolls, sashimi, desserts, and we both had 3 drinks each of this delicious sake/lychee drink and it was $100. Yes, more expensive than street cart tacos, but I found tulum (especially tulum beach road) to be sort of "expensive" so relatively, I found this place to be cheaper. I loved everything we had especially the shrimp rock tacos and tuna tostadas. We got escolar sashimi that was amazing. I def recommend coming here during your stay, they have a very unique blend of sushi and Mexican cuisine. I think it was an excellent choice of our last dinner on vacation. read more

My husband and I went to Ukami on our last night in Tulum this weekend, and I honestly wish we went sooner- it was SO GOOD! We would have gone back multiple times... We basically ordered one of everything that had a Star next to it (which meant it was a favorite) and there was not a single thing we didn't like. Delicious, seriously one of the best sushi places I've ever been to... I lived in Japan for 3 years and comparatively the food here was spectacular. It's all got a Mexican spin to it and everything is really flavorful. The ponzu sauce is pure magic. I only knocked it one star because I'm 50% sure that my husband got sick off of a margarita here. We ate all the same food all day except for that iced/blended drink and I never got sick so we think that it was the ice. UPDATE: It has been 8 days. I am at the hospital with a foodborne disease and severe dehydration. I don't usually leave reviews. That's how terrible this place was. The other reviews say sushi, but what the waitstaff failed to tell me and my boyfriend (but later explained to a larger, more melanin deficient party) was that this was more Japanese/Mexican fusion. That being said, everything is smothered in cream cheese. All the rolls. There was only one salmon roll on the menu (which I ordered). It was salmon, cucumber, rice, and cream cheese, topped with crispy salmon skin. My boyfriend ordered the spicy tuna rice bowl, which was basically tuna, rice, Chipotle mayo, and...cream cheese. We also ordered the prime rib, which was deliciously marinated, but overcooked and incredibly tough because of it. After our meal and cocktails (which weren't completely terrible), we get the check. My boyfriend's cards are having a rough time with the chip reader on his phone. I suggest to the waiter that use the card swipe and he ignored me and told us to call our banks. We get through and there are no blocks on our cards of course. I again, ask him to just swipe the card, instead of using the chip reader. He says he took 3 credit cards earlier so it has to be something wrong with our cards. We end up paying with American dollars. There was a terrible exchange rate of 16p:1USD, where most places were 19-20p. We can finally leave. That was Sunday night. An hour later, I'm on the toilet. At midnight, I'm on the toilet again. 6:45am, guess where I am? At the airport, still dying. On the plane, still. We land, I'm back in the bathroom. We go to dinner 24 hours after this disaster and we rush home and immediately run to the bathrooms (I'm so glad we have 2). It is Wednesday. I am at work. I just threw up. I have no doubts that it was this place. Never again. read more

Went to dinner with my boyfriend for a night in Tulum. The man who seemed like he was in charge was extremely friendly and helpful. Gave us great recommendations for cocktails at the bar and sushi rolls. The cocktails were very fresh and yummy, they use fruit that is in season. Sushi was also very good! Music was amazing!!!! I am so sorry to write this since the staff working at the restaurant seem like a nice people, but this is a fair and square review. The food we ate at Ukami was SO bad it was almost funny. I do know what the heck the previous reviews are talking about but their Sushi is NOT good, they are NOT even sushi. I am a native Japanese live in NYC. I know what Sushi is and I know what GOOD sushi is. If the rice is not flavored with vinegar, salt and sometimes sugar, it's not SUSHI rice. It's just rice. Their sushi rice was mushy and NO flavor what's so ever. I had Udon with eel sauce (?) and the noodle came on a bed of Edamame with the SHELLS! Who the hell would want to pick edamame from your noodle as you eat it? Where did they get the idea from? I could tell some of the fish they use MIGHT be fresh but their flavoring was so off and I couldn't even tell. One saving grace was that they did have a great grilled octopus. That's about it. I am sorry but the previous reviews might be fake. If you are from LA or NY. You have to know good sushi or not for nothing what GOOD FOOD is. Ukami was one for the books! Beautiful restaurant with a warm feel. We came here after a long day of soaking up rays on the beach around 9:30 pm. It was one of the only restaurants in Tulum we found was open late (they stay open until 1) on a Friday night. Service was wonderful and we were so impressed by the plating and presentation. Being from San Francisco, we see all the cool food trends. Everything we ate was soooo good. The owner Spencer even came by to chat with us for a bit and even gave us free tequila shots after dinner! I had a terrible experience here. I immediately knew when I came in that the vibes were bad - we were waiting by the bar to be seated (15 mins after our 8:30 res) and one of the waiters was talking loudly about guests who had sent drinks back. The manager was joining in on the conversation. It was pretty shocking that they were openly talking about it in front of us. They then poured the same drinks into different glasses and sent them back to the same table. When we were seated it didn't get any better. The guy who was our waiter was very incompetent and lazy. Our food took forever to arrive. When it did arrive the portions were tiny and the sushi was extreeemely average. Honestly tasted like the prepackaged sushi you find at grocery stores. The bill was $100 - way more expensive than it deserved to be considering we didn't order that much. Plus they charged an automatic tip with the bill. I was extremely disappointed with this place. Honestly don't go if you're considering. There is so much good food in Tulum and you're just going to be irritated if you do eat here. read more
