It fits us since the adults can do the mead and our kiddo gets the honey's. Both the whipped and the straight honey. The bee hive is a neat taste as it allows folks to just watch them do their thing. Talking to the staff there they are VERY knowledgeable and amenable to talk to. I feel like we learn something every time we visit. I recently visited Valley Road Vineyards in Afton, and they are clearly at the top of their game…read more They just took home the 2026 Virginia Governor's Cup for their 2023 Cabernet Franc Reserve, and after one glass, it's easy to see why. This wine is a standout. It opens with these incredibly lovely violet notes on the nose that transition into a spicy, well-structured palate. The finish is fantastic--long, smooth, and refined. It's exactly what you want from a premium Virginia Cab Franc: elegant but with enough depth to keep things interesting. The barn-style tasting room is lovely, providing a great rustic atmosphere, and they have excellent outdoor seating to enjoy when the weather is nice. The setting at the Gateway to Nelson 151 is as great as ever, but the quality coming out of the cellar right now is what makes this a mandatory stop. If you can get your hands on a bottle of the Reserve, do it before the post-Cup crowd clears them out.
