During a road trip from Sydney to Melbourne, I stopped to relax on the white sand beaches near…read moreHyams Beach and needed some lunch before continuing my journey. There were virtually no other options around. As a result of low supply and high demand, prices skyrocket. Fish and chips sounded good since I was by the sea, and with low expectations, I was actually blown away.
The fish and chips were very lightly battered, golden crisp perfection, the right amount to actually taste the fish and get that fishy texture on your teeth (hate when fish and chips just taste like batter). Fish tasted very fresh and actually had some flavor - most places use cheap, tasteless fish with fish and chips. The chips were, well, chips, but I liked the consistency and not overly salty as I've found is common in Australia. The staff was a bit sarcastic when I requested tomato sauce, which caught me off guard, but not a big deal. Added a Coke for a few bucks extra.
Note: they charge more for dine in than they do for take away, and it's presumedly not much difference in portion size. I saved $3 by getting take away and eating on the beach, I highly recommend you do the same!
In summary, you'll pay a hefty price for meals here since there isn't any competition around, but you will be able to taste the quality in the ingredients, so I can undoubtedly recommend popping in if you're hungry and can't wait til you get to the next town.
