This review is for the beauty salon-this is my go to place for all make-up and hair services. My favorite person here is Alyssa (she has gone elsewhere as of July 2024). She does make up very well and she also does hair well too! I like how patient she is and how she makes sure to do a great job. She cut my hair, colored it and styled it for less than 200.00 so very reasonable (I have a lot of hair). Really like how she cuts, styles, and colors my hair. However, any of the girls at the beauty salon are good and will do your hair and make up very well. Great service for reasonable prices. read more

I had a super great experience today at this ultra, mainly with the Clinique consultant Cynthia. She wasn't trying super hard to push products, just giving me honest recommendations, even pointing me in the way of a doctor for one skin condition. I really respected that she didn't just sell me a product, and told me to talk to a dermatologist. She gave me a super thorough demo on the moisture surge and I walked away with an added step to my routine and feeling confident it was worth the price! If you have curly hair DON'T let Alyssia near your head! To begin this review it's important to know that my hair was down to my shoulders. Now it is up to my earlobes and hair line!!! After spending hours trying to get my newly cut hair to not look like I stuck my head in a blender, I decided to write this review. First her scissors were dull and instead of cutting my hair with smooth edges they basically crushed it and left it ready to go into split ends and snagging on air. I told her what I wanted done. "Just cut off the relaxed part just leaving the 4 or 5 inches of grown out hair all over my head". She gave me a man style hair cut. About 1.5" from the center crown down, tapering to about 2" on the sides and back with about 3" on the top. I said DON'T texture cut my curly hair, she did anyway. then when she was almost done she kept snipping off the ends of my curls that were hanging out. I have divots in my hair like a golf ball!! Needless to say I will need it cut again SOON but it's already so short I look like a man! I would attach photos but I don't know how to get them off my phone. read more

I visited this Ulta on Saturday, February 11 to pick out a new concealer and get help finding a shade to match my skin. The young woman who helped me was excellent!! She tried maybe four or five different shades before she found the perfect one. Midway through, I needed to wash my face so we could start over and I was surprised by the facilities... the bathrooms are not meant to be used for face washing... the sinks spray oddly and there are only air dryers so the employee helping me (I wish I'd caught her name!!) brought me tissues to wipe my face. Surely I can't be the first person needing to wash their face there?! Anyway, she helped me get my makeup in order and recommended a few other products which I happily added to my basket. When I went to check out, the person at the register was extremely unpleasant toward me. She asked for my phone number and I asked if it'd be ok if I skipped that (I'm just not comfortable giving my personal information out) and she instantly started acting very angry. She had a nasty scowl on her face and didn't speak to me the entire time other than telling me my total. While the computer took my card, she got on her cell phone and acted bored with me. As I left, I leaned in to thank her but she cut me off, ignored me, and shouted "next!", never saying thank you or wishing me a good day. It was so shocking. I really like this location. They have better selection than other locations I've been to. Also their Anastasia collection is pretty big here! They also carry diva curl products, which I love. The location is totally stuffed. But I find that's common with Ulta and Sephora. It can be super overwhelming when you are trying to pick up one item. I wasn't able to find anyone to help me. It was early on a weekday, so maybe it was a fluke. But the woman at the counter was lovely and talked to me about curly hair. The location is clean and close to the local mall which makes stopping worth it! read more

Compared to their westside location, this store feels really cramped and like they don't have as much stock. I went in with a particular item in mind (their 3-in-1 bath gel) and went on the hunt. I circled the store. Then circled again, this time walking up and down almost every aisle. The third time I circled, I was craning my neck, stopping to look down every aisle again, when I encountered an associate. We made eye contact, smiled, and she proceeded to blow right past me. She had seen me stop to look every few steps, a clear sign of not knowing where I needed to go in the store, yet no help was offered. Finally I found their tiny display of house-brand bath supplies (the last time I went to the west side location they had several shelves worth). Online the items had been buy two, get two in addition to being 25% off. In-store, this was not the case; they were 25% off but no BOGO. I grabbed one bottle and waited in line. And waited. And waited. It took about ten minutes to get through with three registers open. No idea why transactions were taking so long. My cashier was very friendly and had me out in about a minute, so I'm grateful for that. The store was clean and orderly but I've had much better experiences on the west side - the difference is enough that I'll stick to that store even if I've got east side errands to run. read more

Every time I go in there and ask for help one of the following happens either I ask and person just disappears or I can't get a person to help me (people are not around or just say they point in a general direction and walk away)... meanwhile people are getting assistance and personal attention. I see people getting one on one attention to match foundation, getting questions answered, being directed to products. Not me. I don't know if it is because I wear light makeup and they don't think they can make money off of me and don't think I am worth their time, but it is frustrating. One time I came in without any make up on (I have quite the dark circles) and I was merely insulted about what I looked like and the girl walked away. Thanks Ulta. read more

stopped in today to get a shade match with my mom. when we arrived we noticed beauty consultants/ sales girls huddled together laughing and talking which is whatever. I'm already nervous enough because i am out of my element and insecure due to my lack of knowledge with makeup. We then ask for help because they didn't notice us standing there, and they kind of hesitated and laughed at us then decided to send someone to help us. The girl that helped me had no idea what she was doing which is fine, i'd rather her just be honest and have someone step in to help. I was very overwhelmed with how many times she had me clean my face and swatch colors and then clean my face and then lose track of the colors that barely matched. she then clocked out midway through the shade match and left me with random shades on my face and literally left over 10 tinted moisturizers on the counter. I then was so overwhelmed I asked if someone who knew what they were doing could please help us. The beauty sales advisor (supervisor? dark hair) was super awesome and helped us and apologized. I've never had an experience like that and she was awesome. I was just baffled by how insecure and overwhelming the beginning of our experience was. The checkout girls were nice and helped us out as well. They definitely need to train their beauty sales a little bit better because I should not leave feeling more insecure than when i came by their sales team. (not their management, i didn't get names but the blonde lead management and dark brown hair management were super awesome.) read more

I don't really shop for makeup here but the last two visits here I was being watched several times by employees. As if I was attempting to do theft in the store but that was not the case. I understand employees ask You if you need help finding anything but every time I went into the store to many employees were watching me and asking if I needed help. Than I believe who is the lost prevention guy who works at ulta came up to me and asked if I needed help.. this is not okay.. I shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable or being watched!! read more

Sucks big time - I don't get coupons in mail and staff will not use the records they have in the store that says i am a member. Help scatters if you need help and are ignorant of what they have. A rare exception is trained knowledgeable staff that is there occasionally. How this store got a good rating on here is shocking to me. As someone who resides on the East side of Madison, before Ulta opened, we didn't have any other cosmetic and beauty store in the area. I was forced to drive on the West side of town if I wanted to shop for new makeup. Thank goodness Ulta opened saving me some gas! Ulta offers so much variety of beauty supplies, it's almost overwhelming. They practically have every kind of beauty product from false eyelashes, to manicure sets to hair products that typically only professionals can purchase ( or sold in salons) like KeraCare, Chi, Biosilk, etc. Prices are typically reasonable as well. The staff is beyond friendly and are always willing to help you locate products. They also seem knowledgeable of the products they sell from my experience shopping there. I was so happy to learn that they sale my favorite mascara, "They're Real!" by Benefit in full size. The only size I've been able to get my hands on without ordering online were the half sizes. Let me just stop and say that this is by far the best mascara I've ever used and I've gone through at least 10 different brands. A nice perk they offer are free (amazing) samples every time you make a purchase of a certain dollar amount. It's been because of these free samples that I've been able to expand my cosmetic bag. You can also sign up for an Ulta Beauty Cards at no cost and start gaining points for your purchases. Ulta is a great place to shop for beauty products. They also have a salon so you can schedule to hair appointments. I've yet to try that out because I prefer my other stylist and to do my hair myself but at least it's offered. I'd never heard of this chain until it recently opened in Madison. I love it! It even smells new. :-) As someone who finally said "no more" to spending money at professional nail salons, I walked into ULTA needing manicure products, but not sure exactly what. The staff was very helpful in showing me the selections of nail care products and what pieces I would need to do a manicure myself. I've gone back again to shop more since I had a good first experience. I would recommend this store. read more

Ulta is well known for having pretty much everything for your beauty needs, and this location is no exception. You can walk in and find everything on your list, from high end cosmetics to drugstore finds (most times cheaper then CVS) skincare products, the best selection of quality perfume/ cologne, hair care products, and even have a salon in the back of the store when your hair needs a little extra love. The store is well lit, well stocked and the employees are super helpful and friendly. Definitely my favorite stop of the day! read more

Shopping here was a truly terrible experience. The employees this afternoon were extremely rude to my younger sister and I, and treated us as if we had no money to spend. When it came to checking out my sister preferred to not give her phone number and the cashier proceeded to pressure her until she was on the verge on an anxiety attack as there had been a line forming behind her. Overall, the service was lacking and I'm not sure if the employees acted as if she had no money for she is a poc (I've heard stories of this Ulta being racist) or if they're just jerks that hate their jobs. In conclusion, this Ulta isn't held to high standards in any regard. I have had previous issues here regarding my race and have even worked at the location before and received terrible treatment and in turn quit. I will not be returning to this location and will be telling everyone I know to do the same. read more

As a member of the beauty industry and a firm believer in salon products, the mix ULTA offers did confuse me at first. I have been here twice both times the staff was helpful and friendly. I know my fair share of beauty information so when I say "help" I mean leading me to the brand I was looking for or having a conversation that compares a product I have use to one I'm thinking of trying. Although I am not exactly thrilled they offer "box color" - I do think providing affordable alternatives to higher end products is smart marketing. But what matters to me is they offer the brands I like close to where I live so I can stop driving to the west side for my make-up needs. ULTA will be seeing a lot more of me. read more

When I saw that Ulta was opening, I was ecstatic. I have shopped there numerous times since opening and only once have I had a good experience with an associate who seemed genuine in helping my needs. There are a TON of different products to choose from, both high end products and more budget friendly ones. It could be the one-stop beauty shop for most. They have a reward program that their computer system tracks, and I often get emails/mailings with coupons and deals. Their customer service leaves me feeling angry and frustrated as I walk out the door. Working in retail management for years, maybe I'm expecting too much at stores, but rarely do I even get acknowledged when I walk in, let alone when I'm wandering the aisles. I've even had associates look at me and leave the area without seeing if I need help - which half the time, I do. I am not the type of shopper to really seek out customer assistance if I can't figure it out on my own, and I especially won't if I feel unwelcome. I will however, spend money, a lot of money, on beauty products that I believe in. I don't know how many sales they have lost due to poor customer service, or lack thereof. When I have been assisted, the knowledge wasn't there or the helpfulness wasn't true. I really want to like Ulta, and have given many chances. But I would rather, and now will continue, travel to the other side of town for my beauty needs. read more

Makenna mapped my brows and informed me what I should do to grow them in. She showed me some really great products to help with my brows and lashes too! I booked my next appointment! I have shopped at this ulta for many years and never really had a large complaint, but yesterday I went to redeem my birthday gift and buy a new anastazia brow pencil. The entrance to the check out line was blocked by an employee helping a customer. So, I did not want to ask them to move while they were mid convo. I went around to the other side and the girl behind the register was talking to her coworker and I was waiting and the girl goes, 'what's your phone number?' she doesn't greet me, talk to me, or anything. So, I told her I was there to redeem my birthday gift and showed her the coupon on my phone she grabs the gift and grabs my phone and scans the code. I paid in cash for my other items and she handed my bag without saying anything. I have had way better service here than that and she was newer. I shop there almost every month to stock my collection and this was my first bad experience. read more

Got a facial with Jaunita! It was so relaxing!! I even fell asleep! Honestly, Jaunita knows her stuff. She's very knowledgable about the Dermalogica products and what works with your skin. My face lost its glow when the cold months hit and its back! I'm currently experiencing some dryness and she recommended a really nice precleanse and moisturiser that's making my skin bounce back! This is really your one stop shop. I love the fact that they have brow bar! Lord knows I need help with my eyebrows! I didn't catch the girls name but her brows are spectacular! She gave me some tips and I will definitely go back to her to get my brows on point! They always have my preferred products and all staff members are always friendly and very helpful. I got my hair cut sometime in July 2014 by the Manager and she did a horrible job at it. I asked for layers and came home to chopped off, uneven, and most disturbing haircut in my life. I will never go there again. Please go elsewhere for hair cuts. Horrible service and haircuts. Come to think she would know better but she obviously doesn't know what she was doing. I am visiting from Monterey, CA, and needed a previous (awful) hair cut corrected -- the store manager Jenelle cut and colored my hair last week and I just returned again 10/2/14 to have her do the Kerastraight smoothing treatment. She did an amazing job! After 3 bad haircuts from over-priced salons in CA, my hair finally looks awesome!! I HIGHLY recommend Ulta's smoothing treatment for curly haired women - I've had it done many times over the last decade at other salons - Ulta's prices are very competitive and the product gave me great results. read more

I wasn't impressed with this store eighteen months ago-now I've changed my mind. My Halloween costume was different and unique: I went as a makeup brush. I was trying to figure out a specific look in regards to makeup, and Bri took the time to help me. After searching through a few product lines, I mentioned I like Urban Decay, and showed her what colors I have from that brand. Bri gave me the best tips including color, and I looked amazing! Since that experience, Bri has become my go to girl for questions. The staff there has changed, and they take the time to listen, along with offering product suggestions. I'm impressed with this store and really like it, compared to what it used to be. read more

Needed a new brush to tame my new bangs, and I decided to check out the Ulta on the East side. This store was terribly disorganized and also straight up disgusting. They have an extensive selection of brushes, but absolutely nothing was in its correct spot. This is a big deal when Ulta sells multiple different brands of essentially the same brush, and the difference between brands for a basically identical product can be as much as $12. Having to match up tiny tags on the shelves with the brand name on each brush I looked at was a pain in the butt. Additionally, I reached into a bin to look at some nail polishes and wound up with a glob of liquid foundation all over my sleeve. Their miscellaneous bins are a total mess. When I asked a sales associate for some paper towel or something to clean up my sleeve, I told her what happened, and nobody seemed interested in cleaning up the actual bin. Whatever. This place is gross. I don't care if I have to drive twice as far to get to the one on the other side of town - I won't go back to this location. read more

This is a review of the Salon Manager, Jenelle, at the East Madison Ulta Salon. Jenelle has been cutting and coloring my hair for over a year now. She is the perfect hairdresser! She has a lot of experience. She makes suggestions if you ask her to; never goes ahead and does something you didn't ask for; does what you ask her to do--but at least in my case I trust her judgement and taste over my own, so I always ask for suggestions and so far her suggestions have always worked out very well. She is pleasant to talk to, easygoing and fun. read more

Normally I love going to Ulta. So many great products, but today they just lost a customer. Planned on buying some things but I felt as though I were being treated like a criminal. I was followed the entire time I was shopping, and in the middle of me picking out my items, I was asked to leave my purse with the cashiers. I refused, set my stuff down, and left. Not sure why they set their sights on me, a 28 year old brunette. I had nothing more then a tiny bag containing my wallet and sunglasses and a tiny bottle of sunscreen. Was set on purchasing more than $200 of items but they ruined it. Never going back to this Ulta again sadly. read more

So disappointed. The woman I saw before had left, and I was assured that they could match the color she used easily when I made the appointment. Kim did my hair and it's so bad I can't tell if she was being malicious or just that bad. She acted like she had never heard of bayalage and so I asked for my roots just to be touched up. She talked me into all over color close to my natural color, because it seemed simple enough and she suggested that the color block of the bayalage was not flattering. She decided to make it lighter than the color I had picked and my roots are a terrible unnatural yellow color and the rest is very uneven. I haven't had hair this bad since my adolescent hair experiments. All I asked for was to have my roots touched up and she said she decided to go with the lighter color so I wouldn't be shocked by so much dark hair? Not cool. Reverse of what I wanted. I've cried and thought terrible things and not slept at all. I didn't even think it could be an accident, it seemed such a simple task. read more
