We decided to go with laminate again due to its longterm durability, warm and slightly forgiving 'feel' ( especially as opposed to stone or tile), easy care, great new patterns and surfaces, period look (1948 ranch house) and relatively low cost. After examining our kitchen, Pete noted that he had probably installed our old countertops - perfect mitered edges and seams that never faltered over their long run. We got to talking about the durability of formica when it's treated well - no scorching pots, no cutting on the surface - and found out that over the past decades he has installed formica at many of the restaurants as well as doctors and dentists' offices (easy to clean and keep sanitary) around town. Turned out he had just worked on remodeling our periodontist's office and her countertops are beautiful and elegant. She gave him a sterling recommendation. His bid was about the same as others we received and we saw that his craftsmanship and attention to detail was clearly superior. I saw The Top Shop's ad in the Lompoc Record and I went by to see if they had any remnants as I didn't need a very large piece. Greg was very accommodating and tolerant of my indecisiveness. He showed me what remnants he had that would meet my needs. Since I was having the fireplace retiled, I decided to use the same countertop material for the hearth too. He also knew someone who could do my tile work and they coordinated the project together. Greg and George do beautiful, precision work. I am so pleased with the outcome. The old hearth was terrible with chipped tile that had been painted and it wasn't level. Now I have a beautiful, sleek, level hearth with a matching countertop. Countertop person came over to measure and he informed me that there would be a fee of $150 to get a quote. It was an automatic turn off. No other companies do this. It should have been mentioned before we even booked the appointment. He gave me a ballpark number that was at least 7k to 10k over the company I intend to use. Appointment was a waste of time.
