L-R: kingfish, octopus, otoro tuna, unagi eek, wagyu beef

I had been looking forward to coming to Umezushi for ages and I was so glad I finally got myself organised and made a reservation (it's very small, so you probably won't get seated without one during peak times). Despite being small, the chairs met with bf's approval (he doesn't like ones that make him slouch forward). Also meeting with approval was the plum/sake (?) that we drank. Service was highly efficient, friendly and helpful. I really like it when those working in a restaurant can give you good advice on options and are clearly enthusiastic and proud of their product (which they should be, in this case). We decided to try most of what was on special for the sushi. I don't generally like white fish sushi that much but I thought the kingfish had a nice flavour. The salmon sashimi was predictably good although not the best I've ever had (thank you chef Shimizu for putting the bar impossibly high). However, let us talk about the really good stuff: 1) Otoro (fatty tuna) 2) Wagyu beef sushi (on special, which is a shame as I want to eat it every day forever 3) EEL (i.e. UNAGI) both in nigiri and kushiyaki form GOOD LORD these three were good. As an example of how good they were, we ordered them all again. They are some of the most delicious things you can eat in Manchester today. The eel in particular was beautiful seasoned and cooked. The tuna was fresh and rich in flavour. And the wagyu to me tasted liked really excellent quality meat that had been perfectly prepared to be both extremely tender and tasty. Can't wait to go back!

Thanks to Yelp, I got to finally taste the best authentic sushi in Manchester at Umezushi! I've heard many good things about it and one of these was that it's listed in the Michelin guide! It's not 5 minutes out from the hustle bustle of Exchange Square but it's pretty isolated, tucked under the arches on Mirabel Street. I was slightly surprised that the place was already quite busy and still waiting for reservations to arrive! Luckily they found us space at the sushi bar, which I've decided are the best seats in the house! It's like the sushi chef is making sushi just for you! We got the Shikkoku black lager (actually lager, didn't taste like a porter or stout despite its looks) and a green tea for drinks. To start we had miso soup and then we were each served the prettiest bowl of sashimi of Argentinian rock shrimp, Hamachi (Japanese amberjack) and lightly pickled mackerel - the Hamachi was meaty and melty, the prawn was firm and sweet! We were then served 8 nigiri each in two sets. They were salmon topped with wasabi tobiko, Toro (tuna belly) topped with yuzu tobiko, scallop topped with regular tobiko seared Toro (topped with plum I think?), octopus, Wagyu steak, grilled eel (which I later learnt at a Yelp event that it's completely home made), and sea urchin. All were amazingly prepared to a high standard of presentation. The fish were fresh and sweet! (Still not a big fan of sea urchin though!) The picked cucumber and freshly pickled ginger that the sushi was served with were great to cleanse the palate with between sushis. Our 'stew' course was a consommé made with fresh abalone which had been slowly cooked so that it wasn't too chewy. This was sooooo nice! The soup looked clear but it was packed with flavour! The abalone pieces were meaty and had a good texture. Following this we had a 'grill' course of a small piece of Wagyu fillet steak that had been cooked over charcoal for added flavour. The steak was cut up into little pieces like melt in the mouth meat chocolate! Mmm. Try that from the specials menu if you don't take the tasting menu! To end with, we got melt in the middle chocolate pud and vanilla ice cream. It was made very well but I was expecting a more Japanese style pudding (with green tea/red bean/black sesame). Still, the night felt really special because of the quiet surroundings, immaculate presentation, polished service and really good quality ingredients! Five well-deserved stars! I'll definitely be coming here again!

Been now a couple of times and after some initial teething problems they have reached a great standard of both food and service (for Manchester). It's easily the best sushi place I have tried in Manchester and apart from a daily changing fresh fish selection for sushi, the also have hot special dishes. Recommend the tempura whitebait - lovely batter, great dipping sauce and a good sized portion too. Don't be put off by the location. It's worth going a few steps out of the city centre for.

Wow - what a fantastic place this is! If you love Japanese food then make sure you get yourself here for a fantastic range of sushi, tempura and some of the best BBQ ribs I've ever had! Just tucked in by the Manchester Arena under one of the bridges, space is limited so booking ahead is advised. Food is cheap, drinks are great value (£3 an Asahi) avid service was with a smile! Definitely up there with Yuzu as my fave Japanese in Manchester :-)

Great little restaurant. Amazing food, and friendly helpful staff. The menu can be a little overwhelming if you don't know the different types of sushi, but the staff are happy to explain it to you. If you sit at the counter you can watch the chefs at work. The food us always delicious and they stock a mind boggling array if sakis.

I love Japanese food and there really aren't enough Japanese restaurants in Manchester. Had wanted to go to Umezushi for ages. This is a small little joint under the arches near Victoria station- it's a bit out on the edge of town but worth the trek. Went early around 5pm but the place was fully booked from about 8pm onwards. It's not cheap but the food is excellent. Make sure you get the aloe Vera juice, could drink that all day!! Ordered a bunch of dishes including miso grilled aubergine, salmon head, tuna uramaki, crab uramaki, miso soup and Taiwanese pork rice. All delicious. They have a specials board which included things like snow crab, tuna tataki and salmon teriyaki. The main menu has a variety of sashimi, udon dishes, sushi rolls and tempura. Prices vary from about £4 per dish to £15. They also have set menus and sashimi/sushi platters. Joshua the waiter was lovely and very helpful with choosing dishes. All in all a great meal and casual setting- music is a bit serene but had a great time. The prawn tempura looks INCREDIBLE- didn't get it but saw some people on the next table eating it.

Gorgeous little Japanese restaurant with an open kitchen where you can see the chefs prepare the sushi / sashimi / tempura of your choice. We ordered a couple of things off the menu, but mainly were on the hunt for some fresh sashimi. We were not disappointed, the tuna and salmon were amazing. Incredibly good quality fish which tasted very fresh. We had a couple of sides and also a miso which I have to admit is probably one of the nicest miso soups I have had. We were very pleased with the quality of food at the end considering it all only came to £18. The staff were pleasant, food came very quickly and the atmosphere was chilled. We noticed they do a variety of selection boards and also some great looking set meals which we are keen to try when we are a bit more hungry. It is a pretty small place so unless you're heading down super early, make sure you book! Great place, will be heading back in the new year to check out some more things on the menu :)

I lived in such close proximity to this amazing sushi restaurant, but only discovered this thanks to Yelp! We came here at around ten on a Friday night, and it wasn't busy so managed to get a table from walking in. The sushi was incredible!! Really fresh and light. I think we definitely over-ordered - we had a small sashimi, the large sushi platter, extra vegetarian sushi, pickles, seaweed and edamame peas. The sashimi consisted of scallop, tuna and salmon and melted in your mouth. As we couldn't finish our platter they very kindly bagged it up for us. Staff were awesome, really sweet and knowledgeable about the dishes. It is quite pricey, and I think we went a little crazy so next time I would try one of their tasting menus.

Run by a lovely Japanese family, this place is incredibly hard to find but worth every step! Slightly pricy for the a la carte menu but if you ever dip in for lunch they have a fantastic lunch special menu in the price range of £8-9. Food is tasty and you can tell everything is fresh. Definitely a perfect place to take friends of someone special as the ambience is very contemporary and quiet.

Randomly walked into this place, its one of them gem places. Hidden but highly sought after. When we came in the place was booked. Small tiny place but that's Japanese for you. However the host/waiter said we can sit at the bar. I ordered as I always do miso soup and sashimi before hitting for every single item on the kushiyaki menu and whatever they had on the specials menu. The special menu changes from day to day depending on what they get in so I'm sure it is fresh produce. On that day they had cobia collar which was really freaking good. Good selection of sake and Japanese whiskey. Service was slow on that day but only one waiter on floor so its expected however we didn't have to wait for food the chef would just hand whatever was ready over the bar. Sushi and Japanese food/drink lovers need to hit this place up.

Visited this cozy place in a Tuesday night , previous reservation , the place was wonderful, the food was excellent . Price for wines and liquors are a bit high , but we decide for Japanese beers . I highly recommended .

Authentic japanese restaurant, fresh local ingrediants. They list their suppliers on the website. The food was delicious we came here for lunch and had the salmon don, tuna don and a variety of sushi.

I went last year and didn't enjoy the meal. However gave it another shot this year and absolutely enjoyed it! The service was excellent. The sashimi and the sushi were delicious! Thoroughly enjoyed it and will be returning soon! :)

This place kept popping up on my socials so I knew it was fate I had to try it. I was glad I did!! I went in around noon, quickly got sat down and given a menu, and then the problem was choosing what to have. I went for the teriyaki chicken meal set and it was quick to arrive. For a drink I just went with a Japanese green tea. The meal set was quick to come and it had a plate of teriyaki chicken, a bowl of white rice, and a bowl of miso soup. I loved all of it. I read up on the correct way to have it all, picked up my chopsticks and went to town. I was a little nervous for the miso soup as I've had one before and didn't like it but this one was amazing. The chicken was perfectly cooked and full of flavour, the rice shot, fluffy, and hot. I definitely will go back here as there was more I wanted to try. The ambiance was amazing, I was in front of the kitchen so could see the chefs preparing the food, and all the different bottles of sake were around so I could look at those and pick one if I wanted some alcohol. Went down several flights of stairs, cute, at the time quiet atmosphere, seated straightaway. The staff were really nice, especially the lady that closed our ticket. She was a hoot and sharing with our son how he should be a Manchester "United" fab vs "City". Ordered several different things to try since it was our 1st time, most reviews seem old and not good. So let's get into it: 1st up: Duck Gyoza: fried very crispy with a side of cherry hoisin sauce. The meat was pretty tender. Was it good, yes, would I personally order again, no. I like the steamed gyoza better for me. 2nd: The Hot Honey Fried Chicken (Teriyaki flavor). Chicken coated in hot honey + teriyaki sauce. Topped with mixed pickles and served with a zesty vegan mayo on the side. Let me clear my throat, this right is my kinda food. Th meat was tender, spicy, sweet and savory all at the same dang time. In fact, we ordered a 2nd order. This was a table hit!!! 3rd: Bang, Bang Cauliflower. Hear me when I say,SPICY!!! Good but SPICY, my husband loved this so much he ordered a 2nd serving. 4th: The reason we came, our son's request (11may I add). shirodashi pork belly ramen slow-cooked pork belly drizzled with korean barbecue sauce + ramen noodles in a rich chicken broth. pea shoots. menma. wakame. spring onion. half a tea-stained egg. To our surprise, he tore into this bowl!! He will likely eat most foods kids his age doesn't eat but he didn't shy away from any of the ingredients, I was taken aback when he bit into the egg!! As for mom tax on his food, the noodles could have been a bit softer (cooked longer). The flavor was pretty good. Not saying I need to order my own but glad he enjoyed it!! We had water, him a Sprite, happy about the Zero Sugar but wish it was fountain vs. can. All in all pretty decent meal, pricing was okay for the amount of food, I guess. . I liked the decor and how vibes overall. The staff were friendly and polite but service was quite slow as it took ages to get the waiters attention to order. The one thing that disappointed me was the lack of sake ok the menu as they seemed to be a Japanese tapas bar, so sake seems like an obvious option. Nine of us turned up for lunch on a miserably cold, wet day. The meal here was just about better than ok, but not at all near great; scrapes two stars against price paid. If I were invited back I wouldn't be looking forward to going again. The teppanyaki 'show' is almost non existent. We've been to dozens of these shows over years in USA and on cruises. The shows are usually highly entertaining with food portions tasty and generous. This place was lifeless in comparison so if it's the show that attracts you'll waste your time and a lot of money too. Customers are also being ripped - off. This is the biggest shock I had - although the cooking left much to be desired as it's not simply cooking that's essential: building and concentrating flavour and plating up tasty food is important and mostly missing here. My wife chose what was a mean - portioned duck spring roll starter at a stonking £8 - 75p in ingredients to make (see photo). It tasted ok but not super. I got a 1 star tempura seafood £9.5 starter. It was also quite poor, not generous, lukewarm and the tempura wasn't crispy light either. I do better/tastier at home. A £1 chicken breast becomes a £20 teppanyaki with the addition of some sliced fried potatoes, about 20 pence worth of potato and tasteless thin sliced vegetables, tipped from a plastic bag onto a hot plate (beansprouts/carrots/snow-peas) then steam cooked to limp, unappetising, served with a very small bowl of fried, long grain white rice; say about fifteen pence worth. The rice wasn't cooked in front of us but at the hot plate behind our 'chef'. My pitiful small portion of cheap rice was al mush rather than al dente, with lumps of starchy boiled rice still prominent (see photo). No second portion was offered. I opted for fillet steak main £26 for 4/5 ounces of raw meat; had I opted for sirloin it was £24 for 6/7 ounces. The meats were tasty and cooked as ordered. I chose the Sapporo peppercorn sauce. It was far and away the tastiest part of the whole meal by a distance (not a big challenge) but the 'chef' slightly burned the pepper sauce. My first 330ml ale choice at 7% wasn't available (£12.05 a pint) I got a 6% tasty amber ale (£10.32 a pint). The staff are polite and courteous. The atmosphere was surprisingly muted despite the fact that the restaurant was very busy ripping off lots of folks at one time.

In a hotel setting, and dining concept run by Amir Jati ; attention to detail is everything! 4 star experience but don't think I would go here again. Interesting concept mixing Mexican and Japanese, it's definitely worth a try if you've never been!

Located inside the excellent, Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel, just off Deansgate on Peter Street in…read moreManchester. Peter Street Kitchen combines Japanese and Mexican cuisine in a cool, modern menu down to the standard A la carte menu and even the breakfast, for example with your standard hotel breakfast which is served here you can order "A taste of" one of these beautiful countries. Japan: Smoked salmon sashimi on a toasted muffin with wasabi mayo, shichimi and fresh lemon Mexico: Poached hens' eggs, cayenne-buttered muffin, sliced avocado and Mayan-spiced hollandaise. I visited here for breakfast during my stay at the Radisson, and I feel I was impressed with the quality of both food and service. Breakfast is served from 7 to 10:30 during the week, and between 7:30 and 11 on weekends and bank holidays, which is pretty much in line with other hotels in the area. At £20 per head, breakfast is slightly more expensive but as it is located in a five-star hotel this can be expected, and there is a discounted rate for hotel guests, for previous bookings I've paid between £6.25 and £7.25 each which is a considerable saving, while being much cheaper than other hotels in Manchester which generally charge between £13 and £18. The buffet selection is small and it can be hard to access at times, as they are located on a high table and the breakfast area is slightly small and cramped so can get busy with everyone wanting the freshly made baked beans (had a paprika kick), or the creamy scrambled egg. One thing I found confusing is that you had to order toast with your server, which most other hotel breakfasts usually let you do yourself, which did cause some confusion for me in knowing which toast was and wasn't gluten free, luckily I managed to stop myself before eating the first lot of toast that comes out - the gluten-containing toast my friend ordered looked stunning, it was presented in a cardboard tray with butter and jam, and split into quarters. I've never seen toast presented so beautifully, which is what added insult to injury when mine come out unsliced with no extras next to my omelette, with soggy store-bought bread which tasted like cat food. All of the items on the buffet I tried were good quality including extras, they managed to make poached and fried eggs to my liking, even though I would have liked them on the buffet, ordering them fresh meant they'd be fresher and be able to make them to my liking so I did like that. I also ordered a ham and cheese omelette, it tasted good and was seasoned well, I did have to send my first one back as it was really overcooked which was a shame. The orange juice here was fresh, it tasted freshly squeezed with pulp, however, my main issue with the fruit juices would be that they were in jugs rather than the pourers most hotel use, and there was only a selection of orange or grapefruit juice, I would have prefered another juice or two to choose from such as Apple. As within the hotel, they used the premium tea brand Newby and I had a really enjoyable earl grey tea which tasted fantastic, which is also something this hotel does better than others. Overall, minus a few negatives and inconvenience, the breakfast and overall service at Peter Street Kitchen is good, and despite being in a five-star hotel the prices are much more reasonable than one would expect, such as charging between £6.25 and £20 for breakfast, and £28 for afternoon tea. A four-star review for good quality food and service has been awarded, but due to issues with the presentation of the buffet and issues with how my omelette was cooked (an egg station would have been super to watch the chef cook your food), I feel it doesn't deserve higher than the four-star rating.

Why 2 stars??? The sushi is premade and fridged, self serve. The soup was hot but pretty tasteless even with all the toppings. Just very disappointed with the food. I was looking for something quick, that's how I ended up here. Well, that's what I got, a quick effortless and tasteless food. Oh well, time foe my cruise! Gonna have to try something different after!

Forgoing that opportunity, myself and some colleagues returned two weeks later for a quick lunch and catch up. It's located in the old Samsi unit and it's a huge space, with lovely large floor to ceiling windows which let in lots of natural light (a nice change from the moody ambience of the likes of Artisan and Neighbourhood). Their array of salads and sushi can be found in the cooler units, along with their drinks selection, and hot pots can be ordered from the counter. They also have frozen yogurt which, come summer, I'm sure will be a much welcome addition to the area. Now, it's easy to feel overwhelmed in this situation; there's so much choice! Not wanting to hold up the busy lunch queue, I decided to pick up a chicken teriyaki rice salad, though the hot pots looks delicious. Staff were very efficient and worked well to keep the queue moving. You pick up your cutlery or chopsticks from a side unit, plus any additional sauces you may want, including hoisin and itsu's own hot sauce. These are also on the table if you eat in. We had a good experience and it was great to see the area so busy, a trend which will only continue with the opening of XYZ. However, their price point is enough to put me off returning - £5.99 for a salad which didn't fill me up, and roughly the same for a hot pot, simply seems too much. If you were to add snacks and a drink you could easily spend £10+. Somewhere to keep in mind for quick lunches in the future, but only near pay day.

Don't expect traditional sushi here as this chain caters to more British-inspired and street food…read moredishes. The food is good and the service is pleasant though they do add a (removable) service charge by default. It's in the Arndale shopping centre so it's quite noisy and you definitely hear the music and announcements from the centre. Plenty of seats, both bar seating and booths. They have recently launched new deals including a pricey all you can eat option and a three-plates for a set price option on Mondays.

Now .. this review is based on my liking of sushi ... this was the first time I tried proper stuff…read moreBUT everything about the restaurant was fine so if you like sushi then BY ALL MEANS .. you'll not find a better place. On my trip, it was a little late to open as they had problems with the hot food service ... these things happen so I won't hold it against them ... so I got a seat straight away, the staff were extremely helpful and it felt good. I love the idea of food coming around and you checking it out on the menu and picking it up. First thing I picked up was some broccoli ... it was really nice .. the sauce it was in was awesome. I did kinda have an idea of what I wanted before hand so I just had to wait for it ... as it was just opening, things were a little slow to come around ... plus I was like at the opposite end of where the sushi chefs were so it probably all went anyways. I wanted the seared beef but it never came and, thinking about it now, it probably won't have come until the hot food part was working again ... by the time it was on, it was fuller so it would have taken a while and I'd already had 2 desert plates so going back to beef would have been weird I opted for the basic water .. it was so cool that there was a tap in front of me to get however much I wanted, when I wanted it. The downside was that it was tepid .. so maybe the cooling thing was bopped too or they hadn't turned it on I don't know. I finally tried my sushi and it was meh ... but this is me not really liking it so it could have been amazing. One downside for me was the soy sauce ... it was far too salty for my liking ... but I am used to having low sodium soy sauce at home so going to normal soy sauce is a big change. The desert plates were awesome .. I had a pancake with custard thing with a raspberry coulis and omg .. I wanted that coulis on everything ... I even did put it on the chocolate moochi that I also picked up ... the deserts were amazing but to go to a sushi restaurant for desert is weird. As I say .. if you like sushi then by all means go for it .. you'll love it ... but if like me you're not sure and wanna try it then go .. but look at what's on offer before hand to try it. It was also expensive .. but I guess sushi is. 4 plates cost me a little less than a burger and fries from solita and I couldn't finish the burger .. this left me slightly contempt but I snacked later. GREAT PLACE IF YOU LIKE SUSHI ... I can't stress that enough ... my review was because I found out I don't like sushi it seems. But I'm glad I tried it
