sautéed potatoes served with every Teppanyaki
    Laura F.

What a fantastic evening! After a random conversation on Facebook, some of the other Yelpers and I decided we'd make the most of January's 20% off offer being ran at Sapporo and decided to book a table and meet for a catch up. I've been to this Sapporo Teppanyaki restaurant before, albeit a year ago, and remembered it being amazing Japanese food with incredible entertainment. And last night it was just as I remembered. The 6 of us - myself, Andrew Y. Michael B. Emily B. Natalie W. And Natalie's friend Izzy, we're all seated around the Teppanyaki grill and the waitress brought us the menus. Me and Andrew decided to share the Mixed Sushi Roll Platter as a starter. It was 2 pieces each of 4 different types of sushi rolls - so 8 pieces altogether on the platter. All of them were great! Very tasty and obviously very fresh too! I did persevere with my chopsticks, much to the amusement of the others, but I decided to give it up after dropping my Sushi about 10 times. Our Chef, Alex, was great throughout the meal. His knife skills were fabulous and he put on a great show flinging eggs into the air and catching them in his hat!! He went around the table tossing the potatoes at each of us and we had to attempt to catch these in our mouth! I was the only one who managed to do it!! *fist pump* (although Andrew came close) and thus redeemed myself for the chopstick fail. I ordered the Beef Fillet Teppanyaki for my main meal - which was cooked perfectly and was succulent and very well seasoned. The beef was served with sautéed potatoes, stir fried vegetables and egg fried rice, all of which were cooked on the grill in front of us and tasted superb. With the 20% off, my part of the bill came in at a more than reasonable price - and I'd be happy to pay that again for what I ordered and the service that you receive. Sapporo is a great place for a meal if you're looking for a bit of fun as well as some amazing food. I can imagine it's perfect for a works party or birthday gathering with mates.

I think Sapporo Teppanyaki is a great place to go if there is a group of you. Good food and a bit of entertainment too. You get your chance to try and catch some sauteed potatoes in your mouth (I almost did it, so close) and also the chef entertains with his catching eggs in hats and generally spinning things about! I went on Tuesday with a group of people. There were 6 of us. One of the reasons we decided to come was of the 20% off food offer. I have been to Sapporo before but not for a long time. I have had teppanyaki before and its one of my favourites - I generally like all Japanese food. I remember the first time having it many years ago when I lived in Taiwan. I still remember having it in a supermarket in the food court part. Tasted good and was very cheap. I have had it more recently (ish) in Hong Kong in a food court in a shopping centre and its cheap there too. On Tuesday, me and Laura F shared a mixed sushi platter roll which was really good. As well as the entertainment from the chefs, it was also quite entertaining watching Laura F try and use chopsticks. Full marks for effort and persistent! (Although she was better than the rest of us at the catching a potato in her mouth - not an actual whole potato BTW, a sliced potato). I am glad we went for a mix platter option so we could try some sushi we may not normally have. For the main, I went for a teriyaki sirloin steak which was pretty good. It all came with veg, sauteed potatoes and fried rice. Sometimes in teppenyaki, it can be too salty but it wasn't this time which was good. My only complaint with the food (and its just a minor complaint) is that the fried rice was too buttery - so it was kind of like butter fried rice. Also, I asked for the beef cooked to medium rare but it was maybe just a bit more like medium. But it still tasted good. For drink, I had a pint of Asahi beer which is my favourite beer. It did cost £4.20 which I thought was a bit expensive.

wow...just wow... I came here purely because I wanted to try something new and special for a special occassion..afer using the powers of the great Yelpness I found this place.. Luckliy we booked online on their easy to navigate web page, because this place was packed, but considering its busyness this place ran like clockwork. Coming in from the cold , a well dressed lady at reception confirmed our booking and led us to the table. It was like checking in at a posh hotel... We were the first to arrive at the ''cook workstation' and so we mooched at the menu. This place by the way has no one-to-one tables, so if you are not comfortable sitting next to strangers you may not want to come here.. There were a couple of menus to choose from, the Christmas and standard. There is soo much choice its unbelievable! I strongly recommend you do a bit of research beforehand so you don't feel rushed when choosing, as everything has to be synchronised with the other table orders. The waitress was a bit stiff but she took our orders efficiently...for starters we chose the Chef Selection Sashimi, (thank you Victoria for having that alluring pic of this !), spicy tuna rolls and tuna nigiri. I did fancy a sake to wash this down with but a 330ml bottle will cost you £15, a cup £2.50 or a bottle £50..so I chose Ashahi. By the time the food came, the other guests had arrived, and it was a nice layout because you could choose to interact with other diners or not...once everyone had settled in, two chefs appeared in the middle and started doing some fancy motifs with the eggs whites on the grill, and juggled cleavers.. after cooking some thin slices of potatoes we were handed a plate full with an assortment of dips. For a bit of fun, they went round the entire table trying to score potatoes in peoples mouths...I failed...miserably... After this potato fest they started cooking the mains all at once....even this was entertaining to watch, from cooking the rice with egg, the vaiorus fish on one side and the meat on the other grill... I had the assortment of fish which had scallops, and two fillets of this other fish which I cannot place...my partner in crime chose the giant steak which was cooked flawlessly... Overall I enjoyed the experience, everthing was cooked very well and with such passion and entertainment...yes the food is little expensive but I think they need to be able to pay the chef's for their skills too, because not everyone can play with knives without killing someone... there was also a 10% service charge...so I am now a £120 lighter,,,but hey its something you should do once... I won't go back in a hurry because of the expense, but when I do I will go as a big group so we have the whole cook station for ourselves :)

Fab place for groups and if you like a bit of theatre with your meal- this place is always entertaining! Basically you are seated around live cooking stations and if you are having the teppanyaki, you pick out your meats (chicken, duck breast, pork fillet or lamb fillet) along with the sauce you want. All of the teppanyaki dishes come with egg fried rice, stir fry vegetables and sauté potatoes. Then you watch the chef prepare your meal right in front of your eyes, which is very impressive to watch. The chef throws sauté potatoes at you and you're supposed to try to catch it in your mouth. The best bit is when he tosses an egg in its shell around with a spatula, before eventually catching it on the side and cracking it over the hot grill. A great Japanese restaurant if you like tasty food and a lively atmosphere, and aren't looking for a quiet candlelit dinner. I had the chefs selection of sashimi and some edamame too- all delicious!

There is no need for half the stuff the chefs do, half the time I was just sat waiting for my food whilst the chefs where too busy 'entertaining' . it's pointless. You do that stuff for babies and toddlers. This was a table full of adults. The food was pretty good. I had several items from the sushi menu, sashimi, steak and lobster. I was quite happy with it all. The steak caused problems as I wanted it rare. I suppose to all the monkeying around the chefs do the atmosphere is all buzzed up. The bar is amazing, good selection of Japanese whiskey, sake and various other alcohol. I spent at least two hours after my meal having a good natter to one of the bartenders. All in all good experience. Just get rid of the clown act.

My second time coming here, 1st time was about four years ago. As it was my daughters birthday she decided on this restaurant because she wanted the fun factor. ... Our group of 12 met in the bar area for drinks until our table was ready..it was Saturday night so it was very busy, we waited a while but it was worth it.. We were seated and ordered, our personal chef arrived at our table and the entertainment began, it was amazing he was throwing potatoes into our mouths ( I missed)..then he made flames that were phenomenal. .and cooked our egg fried rice in front of our eyes.. I ordered the salmon starter and the duck with raspberry sauce for my main..it was delicious and plenty of it to. Everyone throughly enjoyed the evening it was a great night.

The chef doesn't like, he's making it pretty clear. I know it's all part of the act but I feel that I've been slighty victimized. I think it was the egg been thrown at me that did it. Luckily I caught it but he couldn't have predicited that. Now admittedly I have a ego as frail as anyones and an internal monologue that would easily win a role in Peep Show so I am prone to a little paranoia but I'll bet that the paragraph above descirbes not just my experience at Sapporo's but lots of other peoples too. You have to go once just for the experience of sitting around a table that surrounds a mini kitchen, where you can watch a master trickster at work. Yeah, you have to go the once....anything more would make you a glutton for punishment.

I went in around noon, quickly got sat down and given a menu, and then the problem was choosing what to have. I went for the teriyaki chicken meal set and it was quick to arrive. For a drink I just went with a Japanese green tea. The meal set was quick to come and it had a plate of teriyaki chicken, a bowl of white rice, and a bowl of miso soup. I loved all of it. I read up on the correct way to have it all, picked up my chopsticks and went to town. I was a little nervous for the miso soup as I've had one before and didn't like it but this one was amazing. The chicken was perfectly cooked and full of flavour, the rice shot, fluffy, and hot. I definitely will go back here as there was more I wanted to try. The ambiance was amazing, I was in front of the kitchen so could see the chefs preparing the food, and all the different bottles of sake were around so I could look at those and pick one if I wanted some alcohol. It was so small you had to go through the kitchen to use the toilet. The choice of food and drink did surprise me.. how could they find room to stock it all? With loads of different sake, juices and wines. Selecting a glass of plum wine ..himself green tea we pawed the menu. There was a great use of pictures which helped us decide. From various sushi Nigiri, temaki, sashimi etc to noodles and ramen dishes. I found the sushi a little over priced to the average sushi joint of this nature..we decided on the 12 piece sashimi and sushi platter ..for mains I chose my usual spicy seafood broth with udon noodles, beef and kimchi. Himself had the beef yakisoba. We inhaled the sushi as soon as it hit the table. It was good healthy amounts of tuna and everything tasted fresh. The wasabi did not mix well with the soya though.. My main was a far cry from what I had at Baekdu the week previous. This was packed with veggies..tender beef and seafood. The broth was also excellent. Looking up I could see my other half wolf down his..giving it the thumbs up . Overall the service was very good and food was a stark contrast to the restaurant. It seemed as though a lot of locals did the same too, as people kept popping in to investigate whilst we were eating, in the hope of an opportunistic free table. Despite only opening three weeks ago Sakura Houses' popularity is clear, the restaurant was packed but it's also only 6 tables, which may play a part! Either way we were lucky enough to snaffle a table for two off-the-cuff as there was a 45 minute space before a booking and our waitress was happy to make time and space for us. Due to being short of time we decided to stick to a simple meal each, so we didn't sample the sushi - which seems to be the main fare. I opted for a comforting plate of pork katsu curry and it was very tasty and freshly cooked, so fresh I almost burnt my mouth on the cutlet! My only issues were that it is currently cash only and that my meal came a good 5-10 minutes after my partners - but I honestly think these are just opening month niggles. Sakura House isn't fancy, it's an honest little restaurant with lovely staff and I think it's a welcome and refreshing addition to the area.

I have been to Teppanyaki restaurants in the past and have always enjoyed them - having the food cooked in front of you adds an entertainment value which is great fun. The staff in here are great - the service i cannot fault at all. From the moment we arrived they were polite and gave us time to look through the menu in the small bar area before showing us to our seats. We asked the waitress if we had the set courses, would we need a sushi starter as well? She said no, and mentioned that the set menu would easily be enough food. I appreciated her honesty as i was just about to spend a further £18 on 8 pieces of Nigiri Sushi and California Rolls. My scarf kept falling off the back of my chair when people brushed past me, and the waitress kept picking it up and placing it back on my chair. This must have happened 5 times - very kind. We both opted for the 'Teriyaki Kyoto' set teppanyaki menu at £24.95 each. This consisted of Zensai, which was a small starter dish of some wontons and spring rolls. A choice of either Sirloin Steak or Chicken Fillet cooked on the teppanyaki grill and egg and vegetable fried rice and stir fried vegetables too. We both opted for steak and the waitress was right - this was plenty of food. Our chef was polite and our food was served quickly.. the rice and stir fry veg was particularly good, and the steak was cooked how i like and was juicy and tender. However, the chef went crazy with the soy sauce on my steak, and whilst this is fine for some people, this made my steak very salty. I can't help but compare this place to Sapporo Teppanyaki - where it's only £21 for a filet steak cooked with rice, veg and potatos - so i found this restaurant particularly expensive in comparison. And like i said, whilst the chef was polite, there wasn't the same entertainment as there is at Sapporo - which did leave me a little disappointed. But, all in all, the food was nice and it's a nice restaurant.

I spent much more than I usually do but it was really good fun and some of the sauces made it taste incredible. By far the most entertaining part of the evening was our chef. As we watched him it became clear he didn't speak much English so he made all the animal noises relating to what he was cooking at the moment. Quacking and mooing galore.
