Everyone gets "CASS cough," a long-lasting respiratory illness. The ventilation ducts and ceilings are caked with years of built-up crud. If you've have breathing problems expect them to get worse there. Case managers aren't much help, except for giving you useless "resources." Security staff are relentlessly rude and will put out the person on the receiving end of a scuffle rather than the instigator. SMDH! Expect to jettison what few belongings you might have. Needed an electrical outlet to run my CPAP at night. I had to jump through hoops for days to get moved to a bunk near an outlet. Then other guys would unplug my machine in the middle of the night to misuse the outlet to charge their phones. Do not leave anything of the slightest value unattended--it WILL be stolen. If you want to lock your storage drawer you will need to foot the bill for a lock. Avoid, even if it's your last resort.

When I asked for assistance I was ignored and told to wait longer. To my understanding members have been held to be totally reliant on the organization although the supports are good but make sure you are providing independence and encouraging it. She grew up in homeless shelters and group homes from all over Arizona since she was about 7 years old. Her mental health was incredibly damaged and she was unable to finish school due to learning disabilities. From being forced to one home to the next and never receiving even an ounce of love and affection the way Christ would to the point where she landed in what I believe was a cult. This is where I met her. We got out together and began to seek Christ further together and she has been growing slowly and understanding more. She struggles sometimes and makes mistakes and doesn't understand sometimes. But in the time of her being at the dream center--she's worsened. Her faith has decreased and her mental health has as well. I've also discovered that some donations are meant to go to the women there but she has yet to receive anything or any help at all with finding work, re-applying for school, relearning basic life skills, and recovering in full. It became bad when she felt the need to sneak her phone back to reach me rather than use the phones so she can open up--to which, of course, I corrected her one as her sister in Christ. It's ever right to do things like that no matter the circumstance. But doing that led to her being placed outside in the dark alone with her phone on low battery and strange men passing by and making her uncomfortable for nearly 2 hours. When asked if she could come back inside and give back her phone so she can go to bed and feel safer, she was told to wait out there until 7 am. While outside, she was tempted to wander off alone away from the center even with the men giving her creepy looks and peeking around corners at her. The staff stood by and looked out at her and continued to talk as she stood at the door until she knocked to be met with another "7 am." This is what began to boil my blood. I hadn't heard of the place before but when I looked it up I was shocked to find that they're centered around rescuing women off the streets and preventing trafficking and providing care for those they welcome in. But to hear that they willingly put out a struggling 18-year-old with depression and a dwindling faith as a Christ-centered community and home for young women--it strikes a different cord. Upon getting there, I found out that she discovered some...odd conditions. Such as bugs and mold. But none of that truly matters because it's a roof over her head and clothes on her back as well as food for your belly. And I encourage her to be grateful for the things that God places in front of us. But it's hard to encourage her if she cant call me even from the phones there due to restrictions let alone be able to feel confident that she is in good Christ-loving hands. I just continue to pray that God guides her steps and places a hedge of protection over her. I may only have one side of things but the things I'm hearing don't settle well in my stomach or my heart...I pray that those in the center are able to express more compassion towards the people they bring in. Especially young women who don't have many people to depend on outside of Christ...God will provide. God bless you and I hope that things improve with this place. Im still gonna continue to raise money for her to get her back on track, God willing.

EVMC has a 94-bed shelter that provides comprehensive programs and strategies for each resident. For many men facing challenges because of past substance abuse, criminal involvement, life changing events or simply a long life on the streets, it means a long road back and that journey starts here. EVMC does pre-screened of potential residents before enrollment. They are asked to be candid about the problems that resulted in their homelessness. Once at the facility, EVMC staff ensure that each resident comply with established rules. During their stay, all residents must work full-time and save 85% of their income. Some area churches has given bicycles, reflectors, helmet to help residents travel to these jobs. A New Leaf and EVMC believes that the key to success for the residents in re-entering society is providing life skills training, work assistance, counseling, socialization skills, food, basic needs and shelter. There are also Case Managers who work individually with residents to set personal goals and address their barriers in becoming productive and contributing members of society. Definitely kept us busy! All questions you have are answered when prepping. Feeding so many people for free is just amazing. They are very organized and could always use the help. The parking isn't the best and you're surrounded by obvious homeless everywhere so make hard to leave some but overall we had a great time and would definitely come back and help.

Andre House has been a vital resource and safe place for the unsheltered in Phoenix for years…read more Their volunteers are always working so hard to provide food, supplies, and community to folks in need. Their staff is amazing. Especially Taylor! She has done so much to help people connect with housing, work, rehabilitation and medical care. She goes above and beyond always. 6 days a week the guests are able to get water, clothes, showers, a hot meal and assistance with housing and resources. Taylor and the staff at André House protect their guests, serve them faithfully and do it with a smile. Andre House is a critical resource for so many living on the streets of downtown Phoenix. We are lucky to have them. Consider volunteering or donating. This place is incredible!

What a beautiful place. Went here for the Sunday 9am mass for lent. It was packed. The congregation…read moreis so diverse and included all ages, races, and genders. Just a neat group of people. The mass itself was nice. The priest who lead it was relatable and seemed kind. It wasn't the most intellectual mass but had a good lesson. The grounds itself were beautiful and I walked around for a bit. Parking at the underground lot next door. And they had donuts after mass in the downstairs basement.

On a recent visit to Phoenix, I found myself walking around downtown on a Saturday morning and…read morewandered into the beautiful gardens of St. Mary's Basilica. It was incredibly peaceful with the lush grasses, shady trees and water fountain. There are also lovely statues throughout the garden that represent different religious figures. Inside, the church is full of history and beautiful mission style architecture. The stained-glass windows are nice and the ceilings are tall which make for a neat environment when you want to meditate or reflect on life. There is a dedicated parking lot, but it appears to require a permit. I was staying at a nearby hotel, so I just walked. Take note that it's near the convention center, so during events you might be facing a bit of traffic. I did not attend a formal service, but felt very welcome and comfortable stopping by for a few minutes on my own.
