    Audience for Emmet Cahill

How do you review a church? As a parishioner? As a sightseeing tourist? As an admirer of architecture and design? Because of the people who work there? In my case I am reviewing it because I visited it as a venue to hear the gifted Irish tenor Emmet Cahill perform to a small group one cold winter night. I won't review his performance here but it was well worth the visit. As a local Phoenix resident St. Mary's has long been on my list of places to see, I've walked by it dozens of times when attending functions at the convention center (which is unfortunately right across the street and blocks any good visual perspective of viewing the exterior of the church). I always assumed St. Mary's was the seat of the local Catholic diocese just because it is the oldest and most historic church in Phoenix, but no, the diocese is actually based at the Cathedral of Saints Simon and Jude. Architecturally St. Mary's is majestic yet oddly serene and non-ostentatious inside in a modified Spanish mission style. There is a nice balance between the appearance of art from the middle ages and stark modern pastel colors. It looks like a comfortable place to visit whether you are of the Catholic faith or not. By the way I understand for those who favor the more traditional Catholic traditions, such as masses in Latin, Gregorian chant by a choir, incense, etc. that this is the place to come. I met some of the Franciscan friars who administer the church and they are friendly, down-to-earth and fun to be with. The church is fortunate to have a talented musical director, Gordon Stevenson, and a beautiful pipe organ which accompanied Mr. Cahill for his final song. The acoustics are excellent, without the hollow echo sound heard in many churches. One final note, I purposely did not include detailed photos of the inside of the church to not be a spoiler for those who wish to visit and experience it first-hand.

It's a beautiful and historic Basilica loacted in Downtown Phoenix right across from the convention center. It is smaller than I thought, but beautiful nonetheless. Named a historic site by Pope John Paul II his statue is right outside. There is also a pretty fountain in the courtyard. There is a small parking lot with posted signs that you have to be registered with the parish to park there. The first time I went was in the early evening and it was closed, so please check the hours accordingly before your visit.

Me + my dog Romeo @ the annual Blessing of the Animals event.

I attended their annual St Francis of Assisi - Blessing of the Animals (honored every year on October 4) event early this afternoon with my Shih Tzu dog Romeo for the 1st time. Romeo, among other dogs and a turtle, in attendance was blessed with a sermon and holy water. We explored the beautiful church grounds throughout the event. I love the statues of St. Francis, Pope John Paul II, and Mother Teresa, and also the children formed in a circle. The pope visited the church in 1987. I also love their very Bermuda-green grass. which Romeo loved to lounge on because it was cool ;) The Mission Revival-Spanish Colonial Revival building was established in the early 1900s and staffed by Franciscan Friars. It was registered with the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It is a respected member of Phoenix history. Maybe someday in my future visit, I'll view the inside (for the 1st time)... My thanks to the Friars for your services!

Beautiful church. Spent Christmas mass here and it was amazing. It is a very traditional Roman Catholic church so no surprises here!

From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed. We were also a little overwhelmed by the size of the congregation and the music; it was such a different experience from what we're used to in the Netherlands! The worship was inspiring, the messages were biblical, practical, and encouraging, and it was clear that this church has a genuine heart for people. One of our favorite memories is seeing our four-year-old son dancing during worship; he absolutely loved it! As parents traveling with young children, we also really appreciated the family room. It was a wonderful place where we could care for our baby while still being able to follow the service. After returning home, we continued following Impact Church online, and it has truly helped us grow closer to God. Even from across the world, we still feel connected and continue to learn from the sermons each week. The only thing I found a bit challenging was the strong emphasis on giving financially. At times, it felt like there was quite a bit of focus on it. That may simply be a cultural difference, though. Overall, Impact Church has been a true blessing to our family, and we're grateful that God led us there. If you're in the Phoenix area and looking for a welcoming, Bible-centered church, I would absolutely recommend visiting!

There's an incredible amount of young adults that go to their church which was awesome to see. The reason I give only 3 stars is because of the children's ministry. They were super friendly when I was dropping my 2nd grader off for the first time, but when I picked him up, I was bummed to see him sitting alone and no teachers around him. I was a bit late to get him, because I was talking, but I have served at many churches and no matter how late the parents are, the volunteers do not leave the children. He wasn't the last kid picked up and completely alone, but in the 2nd grade "area" it was just him with no adults. Also when we were walking out, the person I gave my tag too kind of ignored us and when I said thanks and goodbye, she just continued to talk to her friends that were nearby. So in a way I felt like people were kind and friendly, but not as welcoming as I hoped for a first time person. Wanting to try the church again and hopefully it will feel different next time.

Then right before the message started we had a staff member come and publicly embarrass us in front of others around us by saying we must leave right now due to our dog. Coming in we were welcomed with our dog explaining that he is an emotional support animal and that he has just had surgery 2 days prior. We are unable to leave him at home due to his 6 staples in his leg. Instead of the team coming up with a solution they just kicked us out. I asked if I could speak to someone about this and they quickly declined and didn't even give us another option. We weren't allowed to listen to the message not even outside we just had to completely leave the premises. Walking out the door there was an 8 person team standing there waiting for us to leave like we were some threat and they just watched us walk out. How embarrassing. To say we are extremely saddened and disappointed is an understatement. Every other church we've gone to with this 7lb puppy has never had a problem. Safe to say we are not welcomed back here unfortunately. Such a bummer. I would seriously not recommend a church less. How awful you have no solutions and you're not allowed to speak to anyone, you just don't care about your guests and kick them out. Because of this expiernce its affected us going back to church in general that we will be kicked out again at another church and caused us to feel as if someone is always watching to judging us like they did here. The environment was welcoming, and our kids became heavily involved in several of the church programs. At first, we truly believed we had found the right church home for our family. Unfortunately, after our family experienced a very serious and personal situation involving one of our children, we reached out to the church seeking support and guidance. During that difficult time, we hoped for some level of care, follow-up, or even a simple check-in from someone within the church community. Sadly, we did not receive any response or outreach from church leadership or members. I even met personally with the pastor at one point and shared that we were hoping to find a church that would stand beside families not only during good times but also during difficult seasons. When we later reached out asking if the church could simply provide a letter acknowledging our family's absence due to the situation affecting us, we again received no response or support. Another disappointment was that after signing up for various church programs, the primary communication we received consisted mostly of promotional emails encouraging purchases or sign-ups, rather than meaningful engagement or community support. This experience has been very disheartening for our family. While we appreciated the involvement our kids had early on, we ultimately feel that the church did not stand by the values of community and care that it promotes. Because of this, our family has made the difficult decision to stop attending and will be searching for a church that more closely reflects the support, compassion, and accountability that we believe a church community should provide. I sincerely hope that in the future the church places greater emphasis on following up with families who reach out for help during difficult times.
