When we started, my wife and I weren't sure how things would turn out since we had our daughter in soccer and that was a disaster because she was completely unfocused. When our daughter started with Synergy, Sensei Linda and Sensei Bob were able to get her to finally focus on what she was doing. And with each belt, she matured more and more, to where now she helps instruct the class. She is also on their Demo Team, giving demonstrations at assisted living centers for senior citizens and other places. Sensei Bob has said that the karate school was a microcosm of the real world. And I think that is true. If you perform well, they let you know, and you advance. If you don't perform well, you don't automatically advance, but you are helped to improve. In soccer, my daughter got participation trophies for essentially nothing. She played with dolls and picked flowers for most of the games. At Synergy, she has had to earn each belt and has gotten true satisfaction from it. Synergy has also given my daughter the ability to defend herself. There have already been several occasions where she had to use some techniques on kids who were physically bothering her. Needless to say, that stopped. I do think it was helpful for my daughter that Sensei Linda was there as an instructor because it made her more comfortable as a girl doing karate. I attend Sensei Bob's weekly Krav Maga class because I am interested in self-defense and not being helpless if a bad situation arises. I travel a lot for work and Sensei Bob is able to accommodate my schedule. So after almost seven years of knowing Sensei Linda and Sensei Bob, I can wholeheartedly recommend Synergy Martial Arts.

So when I came across Dante Rivera's BJJ Academy, it felt like a breath of fresh air. No sales pitch. No pressure. Just structure, discipline, and real mentorship. I had heard there were two main options locally--Silva's and Dante's. Silva's is known to be more "fun," but I wanted something with purpose. Our past experience with Master Park's Taekwondo was friendly, but confusing. Kids who could barely stay balanced were advancing through the ranks. At Dante's, that doesn't fly. I filled out the website contact form and got a quick response from Norma. When we showed up the next day, I expected the usual sit-down about pricing or discounts for paying cash (code for off the books), but that never came. Instead, Dante walked in, shook hands with every parent, and jumped right into class. What I saw was exactly what I hoped for: a balance of challenge, fun, and respect. My daughters (7 and 8) were pushed to think, focus, and move. I watched a girl struggle emotionally--Dante didn't coddle or ignore it. He guided her through, and she finished strong. That kind of moment tells you everything you need to know. There's discipline here, but it's not cold. It's real. Kids are expected to give their best. Parents were laughing as Dante cracked jokes--like threatening to lock kids in a closet or eat their feet. It's the kind of tough love that works, and the kids eat it up. He does a great job instructing the kids, but also teaching them life values and respect. My wife and I are so happy we have signed the kids up and look forward to continuing. They even have Parent Survival Nights every month or so. This allows kids, regardless of being students, to attend a fun night of activities, games, and overall fun stuff.
