I went to Uncle E's because I need a haircut. It was busy so I made an appt for later. I came back 5 min before my appt and sat down 15 min past the appt time. Everyone is pretty nice there. So, I tell the guy how I want my hair. He seems to understand and then he wets some of my hair and starts with a brush. I see the brush when he puts it down: "Who's hair is in that brush?" "A couple of guys. Barbers are busy" "Let's not do that." So, he starts cleaning. and while he's doing that I realize that it is not standard practice there and I left. The owner asked the barber what happened as I left. He didn't address me. So, I can not recommend this place. read more

The shop I had gone to for years shut down . But today I tried Unclee's and man am I happy I tried this place. First off the haircut was great. Lee cut it exactly the way I asked. Despite my vague references, he interpreted my request perfectly. Must be a Vulcan mind-meld or something. Next, I want to add what a cool vibe the shop has. The team of barbers all got along and conversation was great, politics free, just fun. While waiting there's a pool table and pinball machine. And a really cool and mellow pup hanging out. It just feels good being there. Price was decent too $23 for a cut. With touch-free pay if you like. I used Venmo. Finally, all were super respectful of Covid protocols. Mask used and felt safe. But I will be glad when that's in the past. Just not yet. This is clearly a place I plan to become loyal to. Small, independent, community minded shops like this are gems we should cherish. This is the WORST barbershop in town. Between the low quality haircuts and the abysmal customer service you should stay miles away from here. DO NOT GO HERE. I had an appointment scheduled at 11 AM and arrive at 10:57 to get my haircut. I say hello to Lee, the owner and the "gentleman" who is supposed to be cutting my hair. During this time he has someone in his barber chair so I sit down imagining he is just finishing up. While I'm waiting he is also talking to a different customer showing them pictures on his phone. 5 minutes go by before Lee asks me who I'm supposed to be with, I respond "I'm pretty sure you, I have an appointment at 11". Lee proceeds to look at his phone and doesn't say anything back. Now Lee begins to cut the hair of the man in his chair. I ask him when he thinks he can get me in for a cut and says 20 minutes after this one. I tell him I was hoping to get my haircut at 11. (it's already 11:10 at this point). He then asked me if I had to be somewhere at a certain time. Essentially saying "hey I don't give a **** about your time unless if you have somewhere to be" (which I do). I have never experienced such a poor interaction with a business, let alone the owner themselves. There was such a complete and utter disrespect of me and my time. The haircuts were never good. Always below average and rushed. Stay far away from here. Great clips would probably give you a better fade. read more

I did my research, after many recommendations. I made an appointment for my daughter online. Super easy: The day of the appointment I got a text message reminding me which is super helpful. We get their and the place is just packed, my daughter was nervous but excited! She wanted an undercut with a design. She sits in the chair and has a conversation with the owner that's also doing her cut/design. He's super chill, laid back and makes her feel very comfortable. The nerves are gone.... She was legit excited for the design now. I'm taking pictures the whole time which he was cool about. He did a phenomenal job! We will definitely be going back! Such a cool experience. Every once in a while I treat myself to a visit to Sport's Clips, but I had a feeling that there must be more to life. What of the old school barber shops where guys hang around, feel comfortable with a straight razor, and talk shit? Weren't they a thing of the past? No, the tradition lives on at UncLee's. Best haircut I've ever gotten, no lie. Lined up my beard, after I'd accidentally slipped and taken off most of my moustache the day before. Called me Jedediah and asked if I was afraid of zippers (I'm a farmer with Amish vibes since the moustache vanished.) Shit was hilarious. I went to UncLee's for the first time about two months ago. I have been searching for a barber for years and have wound up with more messed up haircuts than I can count. I even tried buying some clippers and cutting my own hair. I decided to give UncLee's a try, mainly due to how easy it was to book online. I showed up at the scheduled appointment time and they were ready to go. UncLee serviced both my son who is 2 years old and myself. We both ended up with the best haircuts we've ever had. I have been back twice since then and each time has been better than the last. My little guy loves coming in and playing with the spider in the box and talked about the dog at the barber shop for about a week after each visit. Don't hesitate, just book and go. They've always done an excellent job with my hair, been seeing the same barber (Jason) for about 2 years now. Staff is friendly and helpful, as well as funny. The first time I went there (the old shop) I noticed on the door that they were accepting of everyone (pride friendly) which eased my anxiety being in there. Not every place is accepting of the lgbt community so it eased my anxiety to start going there. They did make adult humor (never around kids, I've been there when there's kids and they are always appropriate), and it's just a nice atmosphere to be in. See you guys in about 3 weeks! Every time I get my cut from UncLee's it's solid. I stopped going to other barbers who were so inconsistent. On my last visit I got a cut and had them trim up my beard and even got the hot towel treatment. Was the perfect way to relax. Lee gave me the best cut I've gotten in Kalamazoo. He was funny and goodnatured, and the fade he gave me is exactly what I had in mind. I suppose the conversation could be described as crude at times, but they are just a couple of barber pals keeping it real and having fun with their craft. It was honestly refreshing to witness their genuine personalities, as opposed to some corporate facade. The most important thing to me is that the cuts they give are really great quality. Been going here a while. In order of importance: #1) you will get a great cut for a good price. Lee is a master of his craft and from what I can tell he only hires other barbers who are on that level. They always do my hair exactly how I want it - offering good suggestions but not pushy if you don't want to take them. The first time I went I basically said "you decide" and it was the best cut of my life. #2) old school barber atmosphere - there WILL be cussing during your visit, if you cannot handle this probably go to a different barber. Though I've never heard any genuinely offensive ideas being discussed, there's a lot of swearing and a fair amount of "explicit" conversation. #3)They do all hair types (seen great cuts on other customers that were black, white, latinx, east asian and jewish/middle eastern type curls) and most styles - only exception seems to be longer hair styles (particularly femme cuts). They are happy to cut female/non-binary hair but just know that their repertoire seems limited to above-the-shoulder styles. #4) last but not least, this shop is really really busy (at least they have been recently.) After reading the website I was intrigued with their social cause of free haircuts to kids that read one of the books. Unfortunately, as I waited the language and discussion topics were crude and degrading which made things very uncomfortable. I opted to stay and get my haircut which was great and I'm pleased with the cut but unfortunately the overriding memory is the crudeness and degrading conversations that took place while I was there amongst other younger listeners. I recognize different views and beliefs but I felt like the discussion topics were completely inappropriate. I'm disappointed as I really was attracted to the story on the webpage and I think there is some awesome potential to provide a positive social impact on the neighborhood but what I experienced did not match up with that story. read more

Literally typing this up from the parking lot. I had an appointment for today at 4 pm (July 4). I booked the appointment online (something they strongly encourage in their answering machine seeing as they never answer their phone). I called 4 times yesterday on the 3rd to verify that they were going to be open on a national holiday. Not something a customer should have to do, but I wanted to be thorough. No answer, machine kept saying to book online. They're closed today. I drove 30 mins to find out with a sign on the inside of their door. It doesn't matter how talented of a barber you are if this is the business model you're following. If you're not showing up to cut hair, it doesn't matter. Other reviews have touched on them not being open for their appointments either so this is a pattern. If you're going to go out of your way to not talk to your customers on the phone and only book appointments online, then you BETTER be on that online calendar making sure you're there for every appointment, or at least block certain dates so customers can't book them. It's 2018. Do better. read more

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! This is the best haircut "experience" I have ever had! The location is perfect for neighborhood walk-in's and there is plenty of parking just a few steps from the door. The atmosphere is very jovial but always professional. My hair is a challenge but I was walked out with one of the best cuts I have ever received especially for the price! This place is great. I've only gone twice, but each time I've walked out with the best cuts. Main things to consider (if you're new): - They are busy. Make an appointment online and expect to wait 15-20 mins. Be patient, enjoy the shop talk and love your cut. They take time with your cut and don't rush it just to get the next customer up. - Don't limit yourself to only having UncLee cut your hair. Im guessing most new customers request him - as I did. He was behind a bit the first time I went and one of the other barbers, Collin, was open so I had him cut my hair. He did an amazing job and I'll keep requesting him unless he's busy. All three barbers do amazing work. -If you are easily offended or put off by swear words, politics, and adult humor, there is a chance this isn't the place for you. It took me a little by surprise at first, but I'm raunchy myself so I found it refreshing. - They do top notch work at prices that can't be beat. read more

Hate to be the guy to write a negative review here but made a appointment, went in and told the guy specifically not to go up too high with the fade..did just that.
