I called the main SS # and waited on the phone for over an hour, no response. I wasn't too optimistic about calling the local office but tried anyway since I need that missing 1099. I waited on the phone for about 7 minutes but a real person actually answered (instead of the automated message). We were able to track the missing 1099 which was sent to a wrong address. So the agent updated my correct address and printed a new 1099 which is going to be sent out today. I'm greatly appreciative of the considerate service I got in light of recent firings, layoffs, budget cuts, or early buyouts with the current administration "cleaning" our government. The county is the last county to be formed in the state, number 100 in 1911. It was carved from portions of Caldwell, Mitchell, and Watauga counties. The original county seat was Elk Park, but after a public vote, the seat was moved to the centrally located Fields of Toe which was later renamed Newland in honor of Lieutenant Governor William C. Newland, who helped secure legislative support for the county's creation. The courthouse in Newland was completed in 1913 and is a striking Neo-Classical Revival and Beaux Arts design featuring a crowning cupola and Ionic portico. It features a symmetrical five-part façade. Inside, the original courtroom furnishings have been carefully restored, and the building retains its wide central hall and vestibule layout. Recent additions to the courthouse blend with the original design, preserving its architectural integrity while expanding its functionality. Adjacent to the courthouse is the former jail and jailer's quarters, now repurposed as the Avery County Historical Museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the county's past. It is a beautiful building and well worth a stop to tour. The county was created in 1875 and Erwin was selected as the county seat. This is the third courthouse to serve Unicoi County, replacing earlier courthouses from 1878 and 1915. The building faces northwest and is a two-story red colored brick, glass and concrete structure. It is in a Modernist style with a sturdy yet streamlined design. The façade features a concrete porch supported by seven rectangular pillars. A wide concrete band runs along the flat roofline, emphasizing horizontal geometry. The courthouse operates the Circuit, Chancery, Criminal, General Sessions, and Juvenile for Tennessee's 1st Judicial District. I was able to find street parking and walk the grounds easily. I consider these types of structures interesting and definitely qualifies as a roadside attraction and oddity in my opinion. We arrived mid-day to find a few visitors mulling around snapping a few photos and taking advantage of the free access. The Doe River below was filled with ducks and geese swimming and looking for a free handout, apparently they have become accustomed to the generosity of the visitors here. This is a well built bridge that reminds you of how things used to be built there aren't many projects now days that are built to last 143 years, although this covered bridge hasn't been in service since the Federal Highway Administration and the Tennessee Department of Transportation funded a $400,000 bridge rehabilitation in 2003-2004 at that time, it was closed to vehicular traffic and converted into a pedestrian-only bridge. It's definitely a survivor having withstood major flood events in 1901, 1940, 1998 and the horrific flooding in September 2024 and she still stands as beautiful as ever...

It is absolutely FREE and a piece of history you don't want to miss. The state of Franklin never came about but it could have been a 51st state if it hadn't fell through the cracks during all the civil war fights going on. You can go into the cabin and look around. I recommend you checking it out. HISTORY: In 1784, North Carolina attempted to resolve its debts by giving the U.S. Congress its lands west of the Appalachian Mountains, including Greene County, abandoning responsibility for the area to the federal government. In response, delegates from Greene and neighboring counties convened at Jonesborough and resolved to break away from North Carolina and establish an independent state. The delegates agreed to meet again later that year to form a constitution, which was rejected when presented to the general delegation in December.[12] Reverend Samuel Houston (not to be confused with the later governor of Tennessee and Texas) had presented a draft constitution which restricted the election of lawyers and other professionals. Houston's draft met staunch opposition, especially from Reverend Hezekiah Balch (1741-1810) (who was later instrumental in the creation of Tusculum College). John Sevier was elected governor, and other executive offices were filled. A petition for statehood for what would have become known as the State of Franklin (named in honor of Benjamin Franklin) was drawn at the delegates session in May 1785. The delegates submitted a petition for statehood to Congress, which failed to gain the requisite votes needed for admission to the Union. The first state legislature of Franklin met in December of 1785 in a crude log courthouse in Greeneville, which had been named the capital city the previous August.[13] During this session, the delegates finally approved a constitution which was based on, and quite similar to, the North Carolina state constitution. However, the Franklin movement began to collapse soon thereafter, with North Carolina reasserting its control of the area the following spring. And President's Johnson's story is a true rags to riches story - literally, since he started his life as a poor tailor and ended up in the highest office of the United States. Andrew Johnson National History Site in Greeneville has four separate locations. You should start your visit at the Visitor Center, 101 N. College Street. In the Visitor Center is the gift shop, the presidential museum and Johnson's original 1830s tailor shop. You can also get tickets for the tour of Andrew Johnson Homestead there. In the museum you can also cast your vote if Johnson, who was the first President to be impeached, was guilty or not guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors. (The Senate acquitted Johnson.) Across the street from the Visitor Center stands Andrew Johnson's Early Home. Andrew and his wife Eliza lived in this house until 1851, when they moved into the larger Homestead several blocks away. Early Home's exhibition tells the story of Johnson's early life from his impoverished childhood and as an apprentice to his arrival in Greeneville and entrance into politics. The Homestead is located at 209 S. Main St. and the only way to see it is to get your ticket at the Visitor Center and attend the guided tour. This was the home of Andrew Johnson before and after his presidency and also his children and grandchildren lived there. The tour also tells the story of the slaves of the Homestead and that they stayed with the Johnson family even after the emancipation. The final location is the National Cemetery at 121 Monument Ave. Andrew Johnson is buried atop the Monument Hill wrapped in a United States flag, with a copy of the Constitution resting beneath his head. For anyone who loves US history, trip to Greeneville, Tennessee is a must.

I knew he had some difficulties, but his life is interesting. He went from being a tailor to the President. Life was hard back then, and he made the most of it. Very tumultuous time in our country. Nice gift shop and a lot of interesing things to see. We were there on a Sunday so most of the town was closed up. Great place to walk and enjoy the natural beauty.

It was easy to stop and read this marker which has the same text on both sides. It's located at a…read moresmall intersection along the highway and I was easily able to resume my travels. The mine itself is pretty far from here but you're probably not going to accidentally drive that far out of the way. The marker reads, "Sink Hole Mine. Among oldest of area mica mines. Evidence indicates it was first worked by Indians. Remains 4 miles southwest." This is marker number N-7 and it was erected in 1987 by the Division of Archives and History. There is more information on their web page. Commercial mining began in 1867, and the site became a key contributor to the region's mica industry, which thrived until the 1960s. Mica from the mine was prized for its insulating properties and used in various industrial applications, including electronics and wartime manufacturing. Senator Thomas L. Clingman, a former U.S. senator and Confederate general, was hired to assess the mine's potential and helped formalize its development. The mine played a central role in establishing North Carolina as the nation's leading mica producer. 7/24/26 My husband…read moreand I like to take a cave trip every year for our anniversary. This year, we decided to travel from Ohio to the Bristol area. We saw that this cavern wasn't too far away as well and decided to see what a North Carolina cave had to offer. This was the 26th cave/cavern that we have visited in the US. We enjoyed our tour. Our favorite part was standing over the grate with the water down below! It was a unique experience and very cool. Our tour guide was great but we didn't quite catch her name at the beginning of our tour.

We really enjoyed bringing the kids to tour this cavern! It got flooded out by Helene but is back…read moreup and running, and it's a great spot to cool off on a hot day too! My favorite part of the tour was when they cut the lights off for a moment so you can experience total darkness! You couldn't even see the hand in front of your face! Some good history lessons on the tour as well.
