How wonderful to discover this local tea house in the community! I first visited here because of an event that was being hosted. Sampled one of their teas, Apricot Brandy, and it was amazing! My second visit was for a Japanese culture class. Another wonderful experience shared with many along with delicious tea. First floor is cozy with plenty of nooks to sit and be comfortable. I see patrons working, reading or crafting enjoying a drink or a pastry the establishment offers. You can also purchase loose leaf tea they serve as well as their branded merchandise along with local designers. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful and I am looking forward to many more visits to the Philosopher's House. read more

This is such a unique place for JC. In an old home downtown. It is Japanese theme tea house that also holds events and classes. I have been going to the Tuesday night ballet class and my daughter drinks tea and reads a book. After just scratching the surface of what is here on my first trip, I am so glad to know that this place exists right here where we live. It's weird going to a new place and not know where to order, how to pay, whether to just find a spot or wait for directions. That was all taken care of here. They asked if it was my first time and gave me an overview such that I knew what to do next. Order tea, of course! I can't overstate the quality of the hospitality. I felt like a member of a private club where they gently teach you the routine when you're new. I mean, I just met a friend for conversation and tea, but we were treated like old friends of the family. You ever find a place that has several seemingly unrelated offerings that are just what you've been looking for? This is that place for me today. The tea was great. I'd totally come here just for tea. But the atmosphere, hospitality, and just friendliness in the place was almost too good to be true. Strangers smile at one another. Politeness without being stuffy. I am probably not doing very well describing this and, as much I hate it when on the receiving end of this message, you just have to experience it for yourself. I swear that 3 staff members went out of their way to make me feel welcome, without being the least bit intrusive. You're welcome here. You belong here. Lapsang Souchong tonight. Really cool place with small privat-ish rooms where 2-4 humans can sit and I could hear pretty well, so that's a bonus (just enough hearing loss that noisy backgrounds make listening difficult). Mostly tea with some French press coffee. A few snacks like chips and hummus, but not FOOD-food like a meal. Super comfortable and hospitable and not expensive. Anyway, that's my review. Maybe a cool place to conversate, but not for lunch. read more

Cold outside...warm tea inside. They know their teas and their tea services. We had the British service with a beautifully balanced ginger tea blend. The atmosphere is homey and relaxing. This space is a wonderful asset to downtown Johnson City. They offer a vast array of teas and light food items. They serve hot tea and iced tea. They have local musicians who play here several times a month. If you check them out on Facebook you can find the calendar of different classes they offer every month.
