I have read many reviews on Unicorn since 2008. YES - this course deserved it back then. Here is what I know for fact - the new irrigation system worked perfectly last year, they have dropped or trimmed 25 trees, replaced many tee boxes, the greens are purina (awesome), 6 bunkers replaced - go to their new website and look at the pictures yourself. They have 3 par 4's over 430 yards from the back tees and a great par 5 as well. Where the heck can you play a nine hole course in this condition for $24 during the week or 18 holes for $53 with cart?? Last September played 18 holes in 4 hours and 18 minutes on a Saturday. read more

This course used to be a weekly spot where we've golfed many times. This year they have been nothing but rude and nasty. We booked a tee time and arrived 5 minutes before that time for check in. We got met with attitude from the worker saying we should have been there sooner. To which I responded at least we're here still early, and he immediately snapped back in a nasty manner. All of that to just wait 10-15 minutes to even tee off anyway, followed by 10-15 minutes on every single hole. It doesn't take longer to play 9 holes than at this place. If you're looking to dodge golf balls, and have the slowest round of your life, than this course is for you. I am reviewing Glow golfing as I am yet to play during the day. Denise and his team are amazing at holding this event. This as my third time and last for the season. I will surely be back next year. I love seeing that they started with Sat nights but most of the people I play with can't walk a course, but that is a great option for those who can't afford the tournament. Last time I played here was over 6 years ago when there was a crap gm named Jeff and told myself I'd never be back. Heard there was a new gm with great vibes and also heard the course was in great condition. well , it was TRUE!! Actually met Dennis the GM. super nice down to earth dude and his course dog Boston was the best. They have done so mmuch renovations (new pro shop, bathrooms, bunkers, irrigations) amazing!! 10/10 recommend!! read more

My friends and I went to the glowball event and were ecstatic about how well everything went. Firstly, the staff are so helpful and attentive. They were understanding that we were only there our second time and took the time to give us some information on some expectations we should have and some instructions to make our time there more enjoyable. Other staff were super friendly and happy to answer any questions. The layout of the lights helped make our experience more enjoyable. The pizza was great and delivered to us right out at the course while we played. The price for the event was very reasonable and also included carts. To be upfront and honest, I haven't played this course...nor will I ever play it. Over the weekend, some buddies elected to spend their Saturday playing at Unicorn. It was there that they chanced upon angry Little Jeffy. The details of their experience with Little Jeffy are typical of the numerous other reviews you've all read...the guy is just a plain asshat. Is he just the manager? "Pro"? Does he have daddy issues? Regret about his failed pro career? Wife/husband recently left him? Whatever it is, Little Jeffy seems to be holding this business back with his piss poor attitude and lack of social skills. To ownership/leadership: why on Earth would you continue to employ the douche canoe that is the subject matter of every single negative review you have here, on Gold Advisor, Google, etc.? If he's your pro, there are 29,000 current PGA professionals and thousands of other aspiring young bucks that want a shot...so replace him. I get that, especially with Muni courses, the conditions are going to be less than ideal and not championship caliber. That being said, if you have a shitty course then you should make up for it with a great experience. Little Jeffy is holding you back. Guys like he are the reason the sport is dead recreationally. I'm an avid golfer and so are all of my friends. We play around Boston all of the time. For the sake of Little Jeffy's jaw and my maintenance of a criminal record sans an assault charge, I/we won't play there. You should probably address this before it's too late. read more

Have played Unicorn many times over the years. Played here last week for the first time in a couple of years. As usual, the greens are in terrific condition. Most of the fairways are in good shape except for the 6th and 7th fairway, they both need some work. The course is pretty straight with the 3rd hole the only slight dog leg. It's not a short course by any means, it has some length. Overall, it's a cool 9 hole track. read more

To be honest, I have very limited golf experience, but I've played at Cedar Glenn and Mt. Hood. First, there are no signs until the 6th hole pointing you in the direction of the course. We took about 10 minutes on the first hole, when the supervisor rode up to us and threatened to kick us off the course. We were being nothing but respectful, we weren't drinking, being loud, were giving an appropriate distance for the people behind and in front of us. When the man approached he was so rude. He said we took "35 minutes to tee off", I was timing it on my apple watch, we were well onto the second hole within 10 minutes. He wouldn't even look at us when he was talking to us. When we explained that we were all fairly new at golfing he said "Every course is like this". It seems as though people have had similar experiences on this course and its very unfortunate. In a time where everyone is looking to do something to uplift spirits and have some fun in the mix of this pandemic, this man ruined something my friends and I looked forward to for a week and a half. One of us is even an essential worker and has been working through this pandemic, he was granted the day off and he ruined our day. We felt rushed and unwelcomed. One of us even stopped playing at hole 2 after the interaction because he was so uncomfortable. For the amount we paid, and our skill set this is unacceptable to be talked to in this manner. We followed all the rules on our scoresheet and outside the clubhouse. If you're in the area, you'll have a more enjoyable time burning your money than playing here. Mt. Hood and Cedar Glenn are the way to go. read more

A quick 9 holes for $22 sure count me in. Course is fairly wide open with not a lot of obstacles or foliage. The course was fairly dry and could use some watering or landscaping. No beer cart person unfortunately. Was able to crush a couple of beers with my friends (socially distanced) in the parking lot with no hassle afterwards. read more

I've golfed Unicorn for years and will continue to do so ! No one should have to be worried they are holding up movement on the course for any reason except looking for lost balls too long. Being told you can't hit a Mulligan on a public course by someone who works or even owns the course that's all backed up because of normal public course reasons i.e. all different levels of players, as well as overbooking, is a strange behavior . What's even stranger is acting out this behavior because one or more of the public course HACKS A.K.A. patrons is complaining. Maybe I should give unicorn three stars after all you have to expect this type of silliness when you golf public. read more

I have been playing early Wednesday morning golf for the past few weeks. I would like to say that the grounds crew are very friendly and do a great job maintaining the course. I played this course four times in 7 days approximately 9 months ago and LOVED IT! I love playing 9 hole courses (because it does not take up most of my day) in excellent condition. This course had a little of everything for all golf levels in 9 holes. I consider myself a very decent golfer (10 to 13 handicap) but I occasionally hit my driver all over the park and this course allows you to get away with it on a few holes. I live in SoCal and wish I had a course of this caliber near me so I could play it 4 times a week. Did I mention the course was in excellent condition and very affordable (you can not find that in many courses around the world and believe me I have traveled the world playing golf). This is best public 9-hole golf course in the area. I have golfed there for 25 years and been in a league the past decade. The current professional staff and management is best there has been. There have been many improvements to the course and in the golf shop. I recommend Unicorn GC for a straightforward test of golf, no water hazards and overall fun experience. read more

One Star only because of the complete asshole named Jeff that treats people like dirt. The course itself is an okay rugged little course good for learning or practicing after work. It's rough around the edges but decent lay out- small town local course. Everyone else I've interacted with here is great and some even apologized for Jeff's behavior. Jeff is an over the hill "pro" who had a disappointing career and he takes it out on everyone who steps foot on to this course. All of the other Yelp reviews referring to the manager, or the pro, or the staff being jerks- it is all in reference to Jeff. So first off, I'd just like to put a disclaimer on this review stating that I am definitely a beginner golfer and was trying to find a place to practice and get better. So my boyfriend (who is actually good) and I (who actually suck) tried this place out so I could get more experience. Lo and behold, this is NOT the place for beginners. We shelled out almost $70 bucks for a 9 hole course with a cart rental, and as soon as we about to tee off, a gentleman came out and informed us that each golfer has to have their own set of clubs, but it was no big deal. Fine and understandable. Next, he came out once again about 10 minutes later and told us that we were taking too long and the people behind us in line were complaining. He said he understood and appreciated that I was trying to learn the game, but we were holding up other players and we had to move a little faster, and the proceeded to provide us with a complimentary putter to move our game along. But again, it was no big deal. Alright buddy, I get it I suck. We were so thrown off by the frequent interruptions and the hurried pace we were told to pick up, that we decided to leave so as not to bother the other golfers whose time was so obviously more important than ours, the non-professionals. They told us we could not have a refund. Even after we explained that we weren't going to bother them further with our (my) awful golf skills, they pointed to a sign that read simply "no refunds". After ten minutes of shouting, we finally got (part of) our money back and left with a very very sour taste in our mouths. As a beginner, I almost never want to golf again, and I definitely don't want to golf here. Snobs. I agree with Dan M and Johnny C. First, the guy that runs the place acts like its a privilege for players to step foot on his muni. Second, the fairways and especially the traps are in rough shape. I don't know why they don't rake out the bunkers in the morning before play, but it'd make the round much more enjoyable. I don't mind paying $20 to play 9 walking; I think that is a fair price. However, a replay shouldn't be $20. Hole reviews: 1: straight terrible fairway and dangerous to play on with 2 and 9teeing off towards you. Right bunker is well placed but is in terrible shape. 2: straight over hill then uphill shot Nice fairway and green. Birdie hole. Bunkers.... 3: slight dogleg left Worst tee box I've hit out of ever. It's not that hard to fix. Pure laziness. Great hole otherwise. 4: straight Great little par 3 with a huge, well maintained green. Bunkers.... 5: straight Hilly fairway that is generally well kept 6: straight Par 5, well maintained. Best green on the course. 7: straight Long par 4 with a very sloped green. Hit above the hole and you're going to add a stroke or 2. 8: straight Par 3 that definitely plays longer than what it states. Nice green with some tough pin placement. 9: dog leg right. Long par 4. Well kept and tough pin placement. Overall, holes 3, 7 and 9 might give you some trouble but the rest are certainly par/birdie holes. read more

I definitely would not recommend this course if you are a beginner or not super experienced. We were told to hurry up by management before we were even done with the first hole. Even worse, we were told to hurry up right after a member of the staff asked us to pause for a minute while he drove across the hole to pick up balls. In addition to this, the course was estimated to take 2 hours and 15 minutes for 9 holes, but we finished in under 2 hours (because we were being rushed). The course itself was also only okay. The 9 holes are either par 3 or par 5, with nothing really in between. It is also a very straight course, so there is not much challenge. It is VERY hard to find the next hole, as nothing is labeled and the cart paths are horrible. Finally, the tee boxes had a good amount of divots and wear. read more

I know it is a muni, but this course is in the worst shape of any course I've played in ten years - oddly except for the greens which were pretty well kept (hence second star) The fairways were either barren, dried up lerperous patchy crap, or puddle laden goose poop bogs (literally ducks and geese in puddles mid fairway) Boring layout, no views, sand was rocky, etc etc. All the marks of a poor muni- but not as cheap. If it were $10 im okay with that, but not for $20 to walk 9. Never again. read more

The course was in decent shape but the golf pro, Jeff Barnes, ruined the entire experience. It was an early morning tee time when a group of friends accidentally used a cart path that had two small red flags to pick up their golf bags. Jeff had just finished a round of golf which apparently didn't end well and proceeded to scream and stomp his because they missed his barely visible flags. Once he finished referring to my friends as idiots he jumped in the cart, whipped it around the corner and slammed on the breaks. We tried to explain that the cart path wasn't clearly marked and it was an honest mistake but he continued to shout and belittle us. I will not visit unicorn again until Jeff has been terminated and removed from the premises. read more

Very good golf course to learn on. Most fairways are straight shot to the greens, so beware if you have a slicing problem. Went on a Saturday afternoon and there was no wait, but picked up and got a little busy. You can probably play in 1.5-2 hours. Overall, good course and fair prices, definitely will go there again. read more

I dont even want to give it 1 star. 1) the guy at the proshop is an absolute miserable person. He is ignorant, rude, and has no respect for paying customers. Golf is 50% mental give or take. This guy ruined my day from the beginning. Though i played particular well for being so pissed off. 2) they charge a 5.00 fee if you use a credit card. Im pretty sure that is illegal in the state of massachusetts. Especially upsetting because the town of stoneham owns the course and they should know better. I know what credit card companies charge them for fees. 2-4%. 5.00 extra on 30 bucks is ridiculous, do the math...thats no 2-4%. They also sell snacks and the guy pockets the money. Typical town worker. 3) Now, the actual course. Wow. What a horrible, horrible course. You never know what hole your on. No tee box has the hole #. (There are a couple with faded signs). They use the cheapest flags that par-aide sells. The fairways were/are in terrible shape. The greens weren't that bad...so the 1 star is justified. If you are an avid golfer and just trying to get a quick 9 in, you have been here and you know this course is embarrassing. Terrible layout, terrible shape, no money invested into it. LABEL YOUR HOLES!!! PUT SOME MONEY INTO IT AND BE A RESPECTABLE COURSE. 4) overall. For 30.00 bucks for nine holes in this area....GO TO WOBURN COUNTRY CLUB. Night and day. Drive the extra 5 minutes. Stay far, far, far away from this absolutely pitiful course. The town of stoneham should shut it down and build condos. Fire that proshop guy who doesnt realize he's supposed to be in the customer service business. He's probably getting a pension from the town too. Im literally playing Red Tail in my head right now just to get this bad experience out of my head. I've played twice in last few weeks. Good starter course or for a quick nine to keep swing in shape. Greens in good shape. A few holes with some length +400 yards so you can use the driver. Played today. Course in decent shape. Great customer service from the gentleman in the clubhouse. Started raining just as we got there. It let up a little and we decided to play. I was walking with my brand new pushcart and the piece of crap would not stay up. As the green on hole two is near the clubhouse I decided to get a riding cart. The clubhouse guy went and got me a cart, wiped the seat, and got me going again quickly. He watched my crappy cart and let me settle up when I finished. He even offered to take a look at my crappy cart to see if he could fix it. So overall an excellent experience at this course. read more

This place used to be my go to because it was close to my house. During this time, it was managed by Carl who was a very nice course manager. Now they have new owners and I expected the place to improve. However I was wrong, the course looks worse than it did before and the managers are not quite as nice as Carl. There are a couple of nice long par 4s and a long par 5 but this place is a bit pricey for what it is. I don't play at this course often anymore, but they take walk-ons, and it's local so I still come here. If you are looking to play 18, you could play here and then go to Woburn CC and play 9 afterwards. read more

Sterling Mgt has ruined Unicorn. They make excuses for everything saying the irrigation system is archaic and comments like "Rome wasn't built in a day". Truth is the course was usually in good shape every yr prior to Sterling taking over in 2016. Now it is in poor shape and simple things like seeding tee boxes and raking traps are non-existent.
