I was on Maiden Lane when I decided to go to Union Square. I stopped by on Wednesday, July 11th around 2:45pm. I used to come here all the time on my lunch break and just sit and people watch. Sometimes, I'd grab a coffee at the cafe and sit outside while enjoying the sun. This time, I just walked around a bit as it had been a while since I last visited. I walk by it all the time as it's close to work, but I never really go inside the square anymore. Right now, there's a lot of construction due to the the underground thing they are building, so it's not as pretty. Still, I guess as a tourist, it's a nice place to check out. Can't wait until they finish all the construction so Union Square is back to normal. Forgot how much I like hanging out here. read more

What's to say about here, other than it's literally the town square of the city and many consider it to be the heart of shopping merchants for luxury goods. Of course, Tina's of shops and restaurants, cafes, and during the holiday season, people come for the massive lit up tree. For families who don't live nearby, it's a treat to bring their kids here and maybe stay overnight, do some ice skating at the rink here, and shopping for gifts. I love this place. The layout of the park is so peaceful/tranquil even though it sits in the middle of busy-ness' like Macy's, Saks, Apple Store, Westin-St. Francis Hotel, etc. The center of the park is subtly surrounded by walls and walkways creating a protective barrier. This keeps the heavy foot traffic on the sideways of the surrounding streets. You can sit and enjoy the sights and sounds of The City and not feel crowded-in. Standing in the center, you can take breath-taking photos of all the businesses (or a panoramic photo). You can also go to those businesses upstairs viewing areas and take photos of Union Square Park. Grab a cup of coffee or your favorite drink and maybe food, sit down, and enjoy. There are food & drink spots IN the park. Only drawback, I did not see any grass areas and not much greenery. However, it did not take away from the beauty and peace of this park. If you haven't been to Union Square Park, it's a must-visit-see spot in The City (SF). read more

I don't think there's a time I've looked at Union Square and not thought of that scene in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation", "He'd kill us if he had the chance." Blood chilling. It starred Harrison Ford in one of his first on-screen speaking roles and Ford, wanting a pair of expensive shoes from luxury San Francisco retailer Wilkes Bashford, was told he could keep the shoes if they were in the shot. Cleverly, Ford had them shoot his scene with him quickly stepping down the stairs of the Embarcadero Center. You see the shoes before you see his face and they do inform you about the character. Now, the park has far less charm than in the movie, the inviting wood benches and boxwood around the interior of the park that once gave it an intimate feel, gone. Now it's wide open to discourage homeless from lying around but it also discourages everyone from wanting to linger. You walk quickly through the concrete park as a necessity, not a pleasure, hitting the half price tickets booth or underneath, the Union Square garage. After Christmas when the ice skating rink and Christmas "tree" (an ugly cone that's charming only at night with lights twinkling) it transforms back to its drab, depressing, concrete form. read more

We were on a tour bus and our tour guide brought us here. It was nice to sit on the grass and take it all in. Tourists and locals make their way to Union Square Park. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, hotels, jazz and blues clubs, cafes, and so much more here. You will see cable cars head up Powell Street and flower stands in the corners. We enjoyed window shopping and walking around. I love the artwork done on their iconic hearts, it changes every year. It showcases local artists and these hearts raise money for the San Francisco General Hospital. Very cool! read more

You can rate a park now, haha! I love Union Square and the places around there. I always come every second Saturday of May to perform at the San Francisco Taiwanese American Cultural Festival. The place is so nostalgic for me, knowing that there is the huge Macy in front of me and a lot of designer shops behind me. Also tons of things to do around the place such as Chinatown and shopping. They always keep the place immaculate. Definitely a great place for holding festivals and taking pictures (hint hint Hearts haha). Great place for tourists and locals to really get to know the San Francisco vibe. Honestly, I think this place should be more iconic than the Golden Gate Bridge. read more

Union Square Park is a "square" layout that is surrounded by everything including hotels, a high end shopping area, restaurants and many shops. The park area has a sitting area with no greenery. Depending on the season, the square is very festive with decorations. We were here post Thanksgiving so the gigantic Christmas tree is up. The whole place is decked out with lights. It's a fun place to hang out. Many come here to take photos in front of the painted heart sculpture inspired by the Tony Bennett song "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". There are plenty of photo ops in SF, Union Square is another favorite tourist spot. There's always something going in this artsy area: cultural events, trunk shows, live concerts and so much more. Come out and grab a seat to enjoy the liveliness and scenery in the heart of downtown SF. You can even take a ride on the infamous cable car since it runs up and down this area. It was my first time here and really enjoyed the uniqueness of it all. I want to stay near this area next time I visit SF! read more

I use Union Square daily as I work in the neighborhood. I bring my lunch to work and sit on the square for fresh air. The amount of feces from pigeons, dogs and maybe even homeless is overwhelming. While eating my homemade lunch it is impossible not to smell the stench of crap on the grass. There are numerous homeless in the square as well. I imagine this will continue until SF gets it together to assist these folks. I will continue to use Union Square but after many encounters with poop I finally had to break my silence. I haven't been to Union Square for a few years, and it's crazy how drastically different it has become during the pandemic. Many storefronts have closed, the crowds on the streets are nonexistent and the overall hustle and bustle of the area has disappeared. The streets were relatively quiet, and a lot of the more iconic stores, such as Forever 21, Marshall's and GAP have all closed. I noticed many police officers and security guards roaming in the area, and guarding high-profile stores, such as North Face and Apple. Parking is just as expensive, but so much easier to find. read more

Passed through here twice on the way to and from meeting the bus tour. A very neat park, which at this time of year is overrun by construction and an ice skating rink. This would probably be awesome if it wasn't for the cranes, the jackhammers and the immense anount of noise going on. It's just a one-block area, but it's surrounded on all sides by high end shopping destinations, hotels and restaurants. Make it a point to stop here. Union Square Park is a great central location in the very compact city of San Francisco! High end shopping surrounds for several blocks out, lots of great hotels to choose from, a major trolley stop is located on one of the four framing streets, tons of eateries here and there, the iconic, Tony Bennett song inspired SF Heart art pieces are present for fun and cute photo opps, and the park maintains several beautiful palm tress (quite the feat for so often cold NCal SF). One of the major streets is currently under construction, so that certainly deters from the overall charm a bit. Apparently the park underwent a recent renovation, thus ridding the area of many homeless people and dissuading the once present pickpockets as well. There are occasional spottings of street performers to take pleasure in; however, for being such a "city center" park (particularly with all of the ever present tourists about 7 days a week), the lack of street food (there is one pretzel stand) is quite perplexing. Perhaps city permit issues, rules and regs, ...? Overall, USP is a very nice place to sit on a sunny day, enjoy a cool drink, relax for a bit and give your feet a rest...and of course, people watch. Union Square is the most popular shopping destination in San Francisco and possibly Northern California. Technically, it's just one city block surrounded by nothing but hotels, department stores, upscale boutiques, theaters, etc. Pretty much all the major and upscale brands are located here. Definitely a fashionable and cosmopolitan place. Several flagship stores are located on the square, including Macy's and Levi's. It's a very busy area with both locals and tourists filling up the sidewalks and streets. Always decorated extravagantly for the holidays, Union Square, Macy's, and Neiman Marcus each have their own gigantic, multistory Christmas trees. You can see all three at once from the square. Macy's also has lighted Christmas wreaths in every single window. It's certainly a sight to behold. Also during the holidays, Union Square has an outdoor ice skating rink setup. I've been to Union Square many times. Its a great place to ice skate during the holidays and see the Big Christmas Tree. Its a good place to sit and have a beverage or snack and enjoy a brief respite from shopping at all the amazing stores. There is a statue high over Union Square called Dewey Monument. Union Square is sooo dope! After going to a wedding near there we got to walk around the next morning and find places to eat. There are definitely plenty of places that are cracking. The stores around here are HUGE. From the huge Nike Town, Neiman Marcus, Macy's Saks Fifth, Tiffany's, Victoria's Secret, etc. I was so fascinated with the sculptured hearts that were displayed on each corner of Union Square. They are so cool! So I did some research and this is what it is: Hearts in San Francisco began in 2004 as a fund raiser for the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation. Like the famous painted cows, the painted hearts -- created from uniform molds and painted by individual artists -- decorate the city in areas like Union Square, until they are auctioned off at a benefit for the charity. New hearts are unveiled each year. This is such a cool idea! I think Union Square was kept up really nice with the fresh grass and people just laying out basking in the sun. One of the rare days when SF actually gets sunny and hot. The tour buses start here and looks like you can buy some passes. They have a parking garage right here too. Not sure how much it is. Also this year I will be running in my first Nike Women's half marathon and it starts at Union Square! I will see you again oh beautiful one! The square is a place where you will either love it or hate it.... my family are native to the bay so we love it but for others visiting maybe not so much.... its an insane experience both on the eyes and nose .... you get the chaos of tourists laughing and smiling... then you are met with the tenderloin and the madness that ensues midday as the homeless are lively and living in the moment... you see the corner hot dog venders with the aroma of grilled veggies and bacon dog filling the air... someone is always blowing bubbles... you are conveniently in walking distance to China Town and then you get the angry regular commuter traffic mixed in with a little airen here and there cause something is going down ... basically a melting pot of people that make this square feel like The City in water globe that is shaken every minute .. every hour and every second .... phew ... says alot and is definitely an experience you have to at least try once. We went to the 18th annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in Union Square. It was crowded at 4pm even though the event was for 6-7pm. The Jersey Boys were doing a practice run so we were lucky to see them at 4pm. They were selling commemorative tree lighting pin for $10 to help the UCSF Children's Hospital for children w/ life-threatening illnesses & their families. PG&E gave out FREE Greenlite LED 35 indoor-outdoor Xmas lights -Cool. FREE Luna sample tea cakes were given out at the end: Vanilla Macadamia & Berry Pomegranate. Starbucks were giving out FREE drinks - didn't get any. At 6pm the crowds were huge..couldn't get close to the stage & we were crammed in like sardines standing & waiting for the show. We couldn't see much. The Trickster from KOOZA was there. Jersey Boys performed, the SF Boys' Chorus performed, Santa gave a brief appearance. Lights came on for the tree..then it was Crazy trying to get out. read more

This public plaza is surrounded by several blocks of shopping, eateries, and theaters, making it a hub of activity. I really can't recommend a good time to visit Union Square Park. I feel as though it's ALWAYS crowded. Tourists FLOCK to this place. The "left my heart in SF" hearts adorn the park and create a unique backdrop for tourist photos. During the holidays, the city's giant Christmas tree and menorah call Union Square Park home. If you don't mind crowds or if you aren't claustrophobic, Union Square is nice place to visit. You may want to skip it if you don't enjoy mobs of tourists. read more

I find this place to be pretty magical at night and when there is fog covering the top of the buildings. The large amount of gyms and stops will also keep your avatar running around and you will crack eggs and earn lots of buddy candy. Do you like gym battles? Then this is a great place to play. But you won't hold a gym for long. Its war without end! If you are in one of the hotels that ring Union Square you can reach the action from your room. They have all of your typical stores on the outskirt of the tiny park, like Macy's, Victoria Secret, Apple, Zara etc. I've heard (and now can vouche for) there isn't much to do here if you're just sight seeing without an actual destination or purpose in mind, so our goal was to just find the "Hearts in SF" and grab some Boudin's inside the Macy, since we missed the chance to do so at the Wharf. (Their food is better here in my opinion) NOTE: We easily found the 3 hearts on the outskirt/corners of the park, but the bottom right heart was missing. Maybe due to construction?
