such a great place to spend a Saturday. there's farmer's markets stalls around the building from early morning til about 1pm. if that doesn't float your boat, there are also food and vendors inside the building. not to mention the ferry ride over to Sausalito to spend the rest of your Saturday milling around. there are always lots to see, smell, drink and eat when you're in the city. i took mom to the Ferry Building. we had inadvertently parked near Salesforce park and grabbed coffee there. parking is a lot cheaper and less crowded. we paid on the convenient ParkMobile app. then we walked about 15 min to the Ferry Building where we grabbed lunch. I was so glad i tried the pastrami & porchetta sandwiches at the Fatted Calf. i highly recommend those 2 sandwiches with the pastrami as the must try again. (note to self: the Fatted Calf deserves their own separate review) once we were done with lunch, we bought our tickets to ferry over to Sausalito, the ride is only 30 minutes. TIPS: seniors & youth tickets are cheaper bought at the machine. regular adult tickets are cheaper paid as a tap/go along the line boarding the ferry. provided that you have the clipper card for convenience sake. onto Sausalito, clean bathrooms past the park. there were so much to see and do in every directions. we literally walked off our lunch and people watch. check out the expensive yachts dock. i wish i could do some fishing there. overall, a wonderful day spent at the Ferry Building. it is a much busier hub now than what it used to be some 10 years ago. read more

Been visiting the Ferry Building for over 2 decades+, and I still look forward to every visit. A lot of businesses have come and go over the years, but it's always fun to look around. There's a farmer's market every Saturday (and another weekday) with lots of goodies, something for everyone and it's great that most vendors are now taking credit cards. Restrooms are usually clean, and depending on the day of the week or time of day, there may be a line, but usually moves quickly. Another fun fact is that there's an upstairs for events, and a handful of offices. Views can't be beat and love that the ferry picks up/drops off right by an entrance. I love this building and have already come here several times recently. Once to take the ferry out to Angel Island but also other times, I have been here on a jog and just recently, came here to just sea the water and grab a yummy empanada to snack on. I love it here and almost everytime I come to the city, I try to get a glimpse of this place. They have a lot of great vendors here too, so stop in and grab a bite to eat too. Sometimes on social media I see a thought experiment that asks, "If you could have dinner with anyone from history, who would it be?" The big names come up most: Jesus Christ, Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, Einstein, and so on. It's interesting to me that people choose men who either didn't speak English, or who were so smart that nothing they said would register, making the table talk awkward and unproductive. Me, I'd pick a group of architects, primarily those who built public transportation buildings in the US, mostly in the Beaux Arts and Neoclassical styles, in the early 20th century. Such creations were meant to accommodate travelers, who moved in their thousands, and who, after being cooped up on trains or ships for days and weeks on end, were gratified by the large, open, well-lit corridors and halls my would-be dining partners built for them. My table would include those responsible for some buildings that are long-gone. RIP New York's old Penn Station (McKim, Mead & White, 1910) and Atlanta's Terminal Station (P. Thornton Marye, 1905), true works of art, as well as practicality. Other such structures still thrive. We're lucky to have Washington, DCs' stunning Union Station (Daniel Burnham, 1908), and of course, the San Francisco Ferry Building (A. Page Brown, 1898), which is a wonderful waterfront enclosure of space, light and sound that, at its peak, helped tens of thousands of travelers move on- or offshore, every day. I'd like to ask the designers of all these places two questions: for how long did they imagine their creations would last; and, if they thought the structures would still be in use in 2025, how did they imagine we'd be using them? I'd expect the answers to be: "Forever" and "Just as they were intended," which means I'd get to surprise my guests with some updated information. The Ferry Building has had its problems, but those were caused by external forces, and not by the architect. The building's necessity has been undermined by bridges and automobiles; obscured by the "Freeway to Nowhere;" and rattled by earthquakes; and yet it survives, even prospers, today, as a public hall and marketplace that, honestly, seems a perfect second act for Brown's masterwork. I wonder what Mr. Brown would have to say about that. read more

Always a fun stop when you're visiting San Francisco. We usually make this our first stop - explore the shops, grab some coffee and breakfast, and look at the water. There's so much to love about the Saturday Ferry Building Farmers Market especially during Fleet Week when you can catch the market and views. We hop on the L and take MUNI to the market just so we can stock up on @Kualisalsa, Rize Up sourdough, Frog Hollow Farm, and pop up chilaquiles and food specials from El Molina Central (Sonoma). This is such a historic building. First completed in 1898, it is a beautiful building. With the building of bridges, interest in. Ferries started to wane, and it was converted into an office building. The ferries are once again going strong, and in the early 2000s the building was completely restored and so including being able to catch the ferries to points north and east, it has an amazing marketplace. The marketplace is almost all, if not all, local shops. They have restaurants, wine shops, bakeries, candy, shops a bookstore, gourmet grocery stores, (that charcuterie shop looked amazing. ) fish and seafood (you are in San Francisco, of course... ) lots of things to buy. The list goes on and on. Prices can be higher on the more gourmet items, so definitely check everything out. The place can also get very busy at peak times. It's a great place to buy things, grab something to eat, just window shop, or even just people watch. In addition, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, on the plaza in front of the ferry building, is a wonderful local farmers market. The rest of the week on the plaza, , they do have local vendors selling crafts and other items. Definitely worth checking out. read more

There are nice restraints to try and don't forget to pick up some truffle salt for home on the way out! The farmers market can get a bit crowded but worth the wait if you know what you are looking to purchase. There are some local restaurants that swing by to pick up veggies for their nightly meals which is cool too. The ferry building is also the place for, you guessed it, picking up a ferry to head to many fun places in a day trip or to make your way back home. Parking is a little hard to find but if you don't mind walking on a sunny day then it's a good little exercise. They have little markets inside that sell a little bit of everything. Took a nice Sunday morning walk down to the Embarcadero and wandered through the Ferry Building Marketplace. It's the kind of spot that makes you want to slow down and just explore. The whole place is a mix of shops with everything from handmade jewelry and ceramics to mushrooms, wine and souvenirs. There are also tons of food options - pastries, fresh juices, coffee, you name it. I stopped at Maison Verbena and grabbed a croissant sandwich and ate outside by the bay. Between the good food and the view, it was a great way to kick off the early afternoon. Adding the ferry building marketplace to your sf bucket list is a good move. Why? There's so much to do, eat and see!! You can take the ferry or small cruise nearby, there's plenty of bars in the area with happy hour, yummy food, and more. Some spots worth mentioning here is blue bottle coffee, senor sisig, and Gott's! Whenever I'm in the area I love stopping by for a coffee or getting a great view of the bay bridge. We dropped in to the Ferry Building Marketplace on our way to and from the Exploratorium. It is a collection of eateries and shops that are all interesting/special in their own way. On our first trip by, we visited Blue Bottle for some coffee. And after the Exploratorium we hit The Fatted Calf for charcuterie and Gott's for a couple cookies. There is a wide variety of places to grab a bite and when we come back I'd love to try the caviar bar and/or Hog Island. Bathrooms are clean and nice so it's a nice place to stop on the way to BART if you're in the area. And my only wish was that they had more seating in general. I hate eating while standing up, especially if I'm spending some decent dollars. If your party is not going to the same place to eat and/or if the place you pick doesn't have seating, you have to take it to-go or eat walking around. I'm impressed with the selection and my favorites are: Acme, Gotts and Heath. I haven't tried all there is to offer but I always look forward to exploring here. You can save so much time since so much is under one roof. I sometimes have trouble telling a tourist what is important to visit in San Francisco. I usually tell them the touristy spots that they should visit so they don't feel like they missed out: Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge - but then I will send them to places that locals might hang out at too.
