I went to Unique Nails late on a Sunday (around 3:30 pm) hoping for a quiet and relaxing experience. Instead, the experience was disappointing. The salon seated a child right next to me who was watching videos on her phone without headphones. The volume was loud enough that I eventually had to ask the parent to turn it down myself. He became upset, which made the situation uncomfortable. This should not have been my responsibility. The salon has rules about using headphones, and they should be the ones enforcing them so customers can enjoy a peaceful environment. I come to a nail salon to relax, not to manage other guests' behavior. Because of this experience, I won't be returning. read more

I liked the diversity of the staff and enjoyed the conversation. However my friend and I did not like the quality of the work. I originally did not want a manicure because I don't like how thick and unnatural the nails look. While getting my pedicure I noticed the employees nails looked very natural and she explained to me that what I wanted was easy to achieve and I just need "someone who knows want they are doing". After receiving my service my nails did not look like hers at all and not what I wanted. There was a clear hump that created a gap between the edge of my nail and my cuticle. The staff after tried to then convince me that if they made them like hers, they would break and it "would be on me". I then asked for the nails to be removed and they wanted to charge an extra $20 because I wanted them to soak the nails off instead of being ripped off! I told them I was not paying an additional charge after already paying double what I originally wanted before I was convinced they could give help me achieve the look of the employee. Im so happy to have found Unique Nails! It's located within the FoodLion shopping center and if you're not paying attention, you might just miss it. There's nothing pretentious about the aesthetics of this nail salon, but the people here are real sweet and provide excellent work. I've done my nails with 3 of their employees and I've been happy with the results each time. What really made me love them even more is that I finally was able to find a place that uses the unicorn powder that most nail salons use in California! I was soooo exited about my discovery because I had almost given up..... no other nail salon at least that I had gone to here in Durham carries the Unicorn powder. They will soon bring Fairy Dust powder, so I'm super thrilled to try that! After coming here for almost five years, I'll never go back. I initially called to check my charges. They did not provide a receipt and it was much more expensive than it has been (the charges were accurate). While I was on the phone, I attempted to let them know that this had happened but was accused of not telling the truth and they insisted that this is impossible. I even said "ow ow" during my foot "massage" and she apologized and moved to the other foot. What are the odds that I just happened to have a massive bruise on my forefoot less than 24 hours after getting a mani/pedi? As a PT, I know for a fact that it's not impossible to have a soft tissue injury from a soft tissue "massage". when the woman in the phone asked me what I wanted, I told her nothing. I did not ask for a refund or discount on a future visit, I simply said I wanted them to know so it didn't happen to someone else in the future and she still treated me like I was a liar and not telling the truth. What did I have to gain?! It hurts to walk and was definitely not worth the $180. Service has gone way down hill and to treat your customers the way I was treated over the phone tonight is completely unacceptable especially when the results were only ok. I wish I would have left a much smaller tip. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. read more

Eh, only went in for a color change of gel. Wasn't pleased with the impatient technician who wanted to sand off my gel instead of letting it come off with acetone. I definitely told him that I had a seal on my nail because it was cracked a bit. He took it all off. And sure enough a day before vacation my nail came clean off. So I told them I wanted SNS ombré. I also told him I already had SNS on my nails I needed to soak it off while I got a pedicure. This was the first time they didn't listen. The guy was in such a rush, he cut my fingers numerous times with the Dremel. They tried picking it off and I explain to them no you need to soak it off. They tried telling me I had something else on my nails and I said no I do not. I asked for almond shape and he made it into a coffin. Then he had to cut my nail to make it round shape. My Mother-in-law and I came here for pedicures two weeks a go on a Sunday. They saw us right away, were friendly, and did a great job. We both had a "Relaxing Pedicure" which was extremely relaxing and well priced. The store was clean, tidy and had a good selection of colors. I hadn't heard of all the brands and I chose a color from an unfamiliar brand but the proof is in the pudding and two weeks later my toes still look fantastic. I have been before a couple years ago, since it's been remodeled I've recommended the salon to my clients & they have had ok service so I stopped in they took me right away witch was great b/c I was 2 months over due fir my pedi. Picked my color he gave me a swatch w/ gel options I said no then reluctantly picked a color he mentioned the $60 instead of the $27 pedi. I ended up w/ the $37 pedi b/c he said if I want the sponge/pumic it didn't come w/ the $27. I've gotten that with a pedi everytime but what ever get it done I have to go to work. I had 1/2 of old polish on 3 nails mainly the big toe. When he started to polish he said $5 extra to remove it - I would have removed it then or he should have said that BEFORE. I asked him to show me the up charge ala carte on the menu - he couldn't b/c it's not there. I said that is screwed up but whatever that is cutting into your tip . He said u want gel, I said no the 1 I picked he said u want gel? At that point I said whatever I have to go to work - I own a salon, I have clients ,I have my COSMETOLOGIST license & normally tip well when I'm not taken advantage of. I gave him $40 not $42 b/c he took GEL off of 4 toes that was only half on. I left , a employee ran across the parking lot after me u owe $5 for gel..I said I gave him $3 there was hardly any polish on them! He said no the gel u have on- I did not want that gel it is ugly I wanted the color I picked. Chased down for ANOTHER $5 I wasn't told about. He said not to come back - no worries I don't plan too and I won't recommend and will tell everyone & social media about this. That $10 up charge u were so hungry for is going to cost u $100s in the end .. I won't recommend again. This gel didn't even match the swatch he gave me . .A $47 pedi.. The gel colors don't actually match up to the samples displayed. Which I learned after I got the pedicure to match the color I wanted (that they didn't have.) They told me to pick another color but I didn't have time to have my toes redone. Oh and the second time I was told of the gel colors that had matching regular polish. Instead of apologizing she told me that I should have picked a new color. The right thing to do would have been to discount one of the services since I couldn't get what I wanted and had to leave with non matching colors. read more

I came here to get a gel manicure (already had gel on my nails, which they just filed and scraped off. Not soaked like they were supposed to) I chose a white gel polish and the man who was doing it only did two coats and you could see the streaks throughout all of my nails. When he said he was done I asked if he could do another coat which he hesitantly did. I've gotten white polish at other salons no problem no streaks. At the end I left with noticibaly lumpy nails after I asked them to fix it. Save your money. read more

So I usually don't write reviews and this is my first, but I had to make an exception. Went to the salon for a full set and the man that did my nails suggested that I do coffin. I usually switch in between coffin and square so I said I'll do square now and eventually get coffin later. He almost convinced me to do coffin, so I proceeded to ask how much coffin would be and he said "$5 more, so $30" and I said oh then square/regular is $25 and he said yes. Skip later to when payment is due before he polishes my nails and he says the total is $30, I ask why and he says because I got "medium" nails. Btw the nails are not medium, they're more so on the shirt side. I then proceed to ask well how much are "regular" length nails and he says $27. So apparently regular nails are $2 extra than the base price of $25. I've been to a number of nails salons and decided to try them out and honestly.... never again. The nails aren't proportional and I usually don't write reviews based upon subpar work, but given the lie in the price I had to. This is just a warning to others. I gave a tip and didn't complain directly, but I'm sure there are a number of salons in the Durham area that are a lot better. read more
