Tess World Designs is a new shop in Decatur dedicated to African fabric and accessories. Due to…read moretheir success on Etsy, they recently made the leap to brick and mortar. They're located in the downtown shopping district, about a five minute walk from the Decatur MARTA Station. The bold patterns and pops of color in the window caught my eye as I was driving down E. Ponce de Leon. I circled back, parked on the street and went inside to explore. They have a variety of merchandise: African print fabrics Masks and wood pieces Woven bowls Jewelry Purses, backpacks and sandals Wraps and scarves Kente and Greek graduation stoles A few racks are filled with ready-made men's and women's clothing but fabric is really their forte. Hundreds of beautiful swatches line the walls. Most prints are $7 a yard but the silks go for $12.50 a yard. Since I haven't ticked "learn to sew" off my bucket list yet, I felt in over my head looking at all that cloth. Fortunately, they have contact info for seamstresses so once I have a pattern I can choose the fabric and get something made. It might make sense for them to sell patterns but since they don't I'll need to find one elsewhere. Anyway, I left with a cowrie shell necklace for the boy and two pieces of jewelry for myself. I loved several of their fabrics and hope to be back for one soon. Tess World Designs is a great addition to the Decatur shopping district.

However, I liked the way they had things organized, like how each rack had two separate sides. For example, there was a "Dress Rack", right next to the "Skirt Rack", and it was actually arranged in sizes on each rack. Not all thrift stores do this, and a lot of the time thrift stores just haphazardly arrange things. At this place, each size was actually labeled. Secondly, I also liked how there were all sorts of glasswares arranged on top of each clothes rack. It's easier to understand if you've actually been there. And I could see how some people could find it weird or chaotic, but I liked the layout. It really is just a matter of personal opinion, after all. Thirdly, you can actually try on clothes here. This place reminded me strongly of the Value Villages that I frequent, but they don't actually have dressing rooms. I really liked that I could try on the clothes that I picked out, because I ended up not liking how any of them fit. Fourthly, the book haul was good here. I got 12 books that varied from translated French Poetry and a hardbound leather book of Emily Dickenson poems, to two hard back Joe Hill books ("Horns" and "Heart Shaped Box"), as well as a few other books that piqued my interest. My companion to the store ended up getting the second book in the "Ender's Game" series, and a really awesome bartending book that has recipes dating from the 1930s-1960s, complete with small vintage photographs of the prepared drinks. I usually don't rate thrift stores until I've been there a few times, but this thrift store seems very promising in the future for clothes. I wasn't really shopping for clothes when I went here, I was looking more for books and oddities.
