In alignment with this goal, I wanted to try and stay at a hostel by myself despite never having to share a room before; I skipped the whole dorming experience in college because I enjoyed my own space. To be honest, I was prepared for the worst - I expected disrespectful/party roommates, to have my belongings and food stolen, and dirty beds and communal areas. However from the very first day, I felt very much at ease. The employees working at reception were incredibly friendly and were so personable that I even felt comfortable asking them for advice about my work situation. I stayed for 6 nights in a 4 female dorm, and for the most part, the girls kept to themselves with the exception of a lady who I had enjoyed frequent conversations with. The kitchen was being constantly cleaned although I picked up the occasional dirty plate/bowl/silverware and had to wash them before use. The restrooms and showers were acceptable. The beds were bug-free! I was even able to borrow a couple of the books to read in the room when I was tired; the individual lights in each bunk was a nice touch. The lockers provided a little bit of security because I needed a place to store my valuables, and luckily I bought my own lock before I checked in (although you can purchase it from the hostel if needed). The only inconvenience was that some of my food in the fridges had been taken, but it was no big deal considering it was only bread. If all hostels are like Melbourne Metro YHA, then I'd have no objections to staying at another instead of at a hotel. It was clean, had all the necessities, affordable and located conveniently near the Queen Victoria Market with the added bonus of meeting other travelers.

The building itself is bright orange and superbly clean and well maintained. There are bright lights and friendly people at the counter when you first walk in. Accommodation is upstairs so to get to the bar area you want to walk in the big front doors and make a sharp left. After passing through another set of glass doors - you're in! There is a long bar running down the right side of the rectangular room and plenty of couches, benches and stools to rest upon. The end of the room opens up into an outdoor area with a couple of tables and large sun umbrellas. On sunny evenings this is a great spot to sit if there are no smokers present, otherwise there are a heap of great spots indoors. The decor is pretty modern and the bartenders mostly foreign. When I went there recently I had to wait about ten minutes to get a Lemon Lime Bitters because the girl serving me had no idea what it was. It was a little annoying but at least I got to teach her something I guess. The atmosphere in here is amazing. There are all sorts of cool and interesting people and if you come when there's a big game on - no matter what the sport- don't ever, EVER walk in front of the projector screen. All hell might just break loose. Amongst all these great people are groovy machines like a video jukebox that plays music videos on screens around the room for just $1. There is also this weird gaming machine that allows you to play scrabble, deal or no deal, cluedo and more. It was totally awesome....except for when I lost about fifteen dollars trying to figure out if it was Colonol Mustard in the library with the wrench. (It wasn't). I'd recommend this place for casual drinks with friends or an after work get-together. It is very chilled and relaxed.

The kitchen has a really badass view of the Flinders Street Station which I stared at every morning while eating breakfast. Sometimes they have free tea/coffee and snacks when they have events. They have plenty of regularly scheduled things here, like the weekly free walking tour. You cannot bring alcohol here, but they will hold it for you during your stay and they do have a bar downstairs which serves good cocktails at affordable prices. Sleeping is comfortable. I had a room with 12 people, but everyone is considerate and keep the room quiet if someone is sleeping. The only odd thing is hearing water rushing through the pipes on the ceiling. I'm hoping these pipes contain clean water and not waste water. haha. The only cons: the dishes and wi-fi. Make sure you bring your own paper cups, dishes, and plastic silverware. I kept getting sick from the poorly washed dishes (the guests have to use rags to dry the dishes, but these rags are also used to wipe hands or countertops). If you have a phone, be prepared to run up the data plan here. There is no wi-fi unless you are downstairs in the basement or in the bar. This is the most crappiest part about staying here. Backpackers United is next to DeGraves alley. Basically in the hub of everything happening in the Melbourne CBD. I definitely recommend staying here.

Storage is underbed and secured by using your own padlock. There is wifi and you can buy daily, 3 days or 7 day vouchers. The reception desk staff were friendly and welcoming and happy to help me out with buying bus vouchers for my airport transfer. There isnt that many common areas so i feel it would be hard to really meet people if you were there for a long period of time. Downstairs there is a 7/11 and there is a few food places around to either eat in or takeaway. The tram stops right outside and southern cross statiom is just around the corner. Showers were clean and spacious cubicles and i didnt have to wait very long for one. Overall it was a good base for a few days and i would stay here again.

There are no good common areas to meet people and if you're expecting a nice shared kitchen you will be disappointed. The kitchen can fit maybe 5-10 people and there are always people trying to cook in the limited small kitchen. I stayed on the first level and the bathrooms were quite small with only 2 showers and toilets? If I come back to Melbourne I'm staying somewhere else.

There is a bar at Urban Central, a great way to get to know fellow backpackers as well as the occasional local, the bar offers daily specials including happy hour, ladies night, trivia and sports night. If there were any complaints about Urban Central it would only be that there is a nightclub actually attached to the building and it can sometimes get quite loud, but I'm a believer in if you cant beat them, join them! So head down to join the party.

The room includes a TV and towels. This hostel is safe and comfy to wind down from walking and touring around Melbourne. The workers here don't wait on you but they are accommodating when it comes answering questions and being helpful on Melbourne to-dos.

For anyone that is going to be staying here I am your new best friend since I have learn a few little helpful hints about this place. Firstly when you are going to the bathroom or having a shower go to the top level as it is the cleanest, has a mirror and the water is the hottest where in the first level the water is colder. Also for a morning shower you are best to go around 10am because from my experience it was just finished getting cleaned by the cleaner. This hostel also offers a free thirty minute wifi each day on each device and resets every 24 hours. The reception is open 24/7 and I found to be helpful and friendly. Elizabeth Hostel is not a five star hotel but it is the cheapest and anyone looking to save money on their hotel and transport i will recommend this place and I would stay here again on my next visit.

Be prepared to part with your ID, as security for the room key, or pay a 30 buck deposit. Far far far better options for cheap hostel accommodation in the city. I suggest Discovery Melbourne, which is just a short walk away. Or Urban Central, located close to Crown Casino. I can not stress enough. Avoid at all costs.

Cons: ~ From the outside, it looks amazing. But on the inside it is pretty shabby and is in dire need of refurbishment. Dirty hallways, cracked paint on walls, elevators with doors that won't close, shabby kitchenware with peeling plastic after the first 2 uses, and more fix-it needs than I can count on one hand (light that won't turn on, screw on the door is gone, etc. ~ No oven. Just 2 small stoves and a microwave. ~ A really sketchy mail system. They do not have individual boxes with keys, and they do not check identification either. The mail is literally out in the open for anyone to take. With packages that do not fit in the mail slot, you will receive a notice to pick it up at the front desk. Several times I have needed to do this, not once did they verify my identity. ~ Rent is expensive for a small studio (320 a WEEK). The internet prices are not cheap either. Overall, I do not hate living here. I really do enjoy the social atmosphere and I made a lot of friends, but I feel as though you can get that by joining clubs at university and getting involved anyway. I am not going to renew my contract here. I only recommend it if you have a lot of money to blow, but if you are on a budget, please consider elsewhere.

The amount of money I paid a month back in the states was almost a 1/3 of what you can spend monthly to live at the Village. The Village is an old motel/hotel styled property that has been transformed into uni accommodation. The studio style rooms are literally one bedroom small suites divided in two by a cardboard divider. As an international student, I paid almost 300 dollars a week to share this with one other. We also shared; a bathroom, stove top, microwave, and balcony. They've got a great study with wireless but to connect to the internet at 'village' is at least 30 dollars a month in addition to the 300+ one spends weekly on rent. They've got a small gym which is convenient but musty inside and the village staff often have events going on but ofcourse this is at an extra fee as well. Joel oversees most of the students and what's going on and he's a great bloke but I don't fancy much of the other staff, personally. Early in my time here, I had $3000 dollars of belongings stolen from my room and I must admit they were not very helpful during this time nor where they willing to take any blame for the lapse of security on their behalf. Speaking of security, Adrian and Mushi are two of the staff members who watch over the village and it's tenants. They take their jobs pretty seriously and the relationships you form with these two are key. REMEMBER THIS. One must understand that they are not paying for their room when coming to stay at the village but more importantly the atmosphere and lifestyle. This place is filled with international and aussie uni students who attend different schools in the area. It is hectic on a weekend and you can find people drinking at almost any time. The car park is a great communal area to gather and enjoy a sunny sunday but more than often people will be in the court yard or the glass house (glassy) for drinks and ciggys. I must admit, I hated the scene over the first few months living here. Now that all my mates are there and I just come around often, I realize I was paying for the convenience of it all. All in all it is way over priced and shouldn't even be considered but when looking for the easy route as most do when studying abroad, I checked in here and was in for a ride. The six months I lived here provided for much fun, traveling, school work, and most importantly friends. I made some of the best friends in my life living at the village and although many are young and even some first years, these are top blokes and great birds.

I felt dirty just standing in there. Staff were friendly but no refund was given at all when I left a week early. One night was enough for me. I loved the almond croissant. At night there is enough alcohol for a football team to get drunk. They have tons of beer choices and even entire bottles of hard alcohol plus wine. I've never seen anything like it. The staff is great. They always greet you, and are willing to help with anything. The rooms were excellent, and most importantly, dark and quiet. The location is right in the middle of the city. Easily one of the best Hyatt's I've ever stayed at. Absolutely use a lounge pass!!!

After I mentioned to James, the hyatt staff team leader that my wife and daughter couldnt have eggs, he made sure every night they had a vegan dessert waiting for them. Checked on us every day and just wow, he went above and beyond. Karla the chef also checked on us because the vegan desserts are made different and wanted to make sure the flavor and consistency was spot on. And Reak was great with helping us get around the city and telling where to go. The room was spectacular with floor to ceiling windows. It did get hot if the windows were left open during the day so we had to remember that. But great view of the city and would definitely recommend staying here again. I think we stayed for 5 nights? 3 would've probably been enough to do everything we wanted to.
