Back Of Chapel also have their very own bar called "The Green Room," which offers VERY cheap beer, wine, pizza and cocktails, it's a great place to meet new people and enjoy a drink with the owners. The rooms are very comfortable and are priced well in comparison to some of the bigger chain hostels around. All in all a good option for backpackers or tourists to Melbourne.

And - my favourite type - one where there are zones for each - sleeping quarters away from chilling and partying quarters, a TV room for being a zombie and a lounge room for interacting, and an outdoor area. This is a great hostel if you like the first type. The hostel is run down with peeling paint and old stained carpet. The cleaners do a great job. But boy oh boy - people smoke weed and cigarettes on balconies that open into rooms and don't close windows and doors behind them, they party loudly til 0300-0400 on the patio in front of peoples bedrooms. The lounge room has a large TV which takes precedence - if you want to make a phone call or chill with your laptop or chat to friends - too bad if it is blaring. The owners swing between completely over reacting to complaints to treating the complainant like a pain in the backside. It would be nice if they just had a few words with the problem people. There are limited reception hours and no overnight manager - so no one to check the night time - early hours noise; if you ring them you are literally waking them up which doesn't go over well. Bathrooms are clean. Kitchen needs more pots and pans and fridges are crammed. Also it's very very cliquey - be mindful. No one is mean and nasty, though - not that type of place

The kitchen has a really badass view of the Flinders Street Station which I stared at every morning while eating breakfast. Sometimes they have free tea/coffee and snacks when they have events. They have plenty of regularly scheduled things here, like the weekly free walking tour. You cannot bring alcohol here, but they will hold it for you during your stay and they do have a bar downstairs which serves good cocktails at affordable prices. Sleeping is comfortable. I had a room with 12 people, but everyone is considerate and keep the room quiet if someone is sleeping. The only odd thing is hearing water rushing through the pipes on the ceiling. I'm hoping these pipes contain clean water and not waste water. haha. The only cons: the dishes and wi-fi. Make sure you bring your own paper cups, dishes, and plastic silverware. I kept getting sick from the poorly washed dishes (the guests have to use rags to dry the dishes, but these rags are also used to wipe hands or countertops). If you have a phone, be prepared to run up the data plan here. There is no wi-fi unless you are downstairs in the basement or in the bar. This is the most crappiest part about staying here. Backpackers United is next to DeGraves alley. Basically in the hub of everything happening in the Melbourne CBD. I definitely recommend staying here.

It's located in a nice walking neighborhood of St. Kilda with easy access to public transportation. One down side is the tram doesn't come from the DT or CBD (central business district) after a certain time so if you're out late, it may be more difficult to get back to this area unless you take a cab or ride the bus. Getting to the hostel can be difficult from the airport unless you use their airport transportation so make sure you plan that ahead. We forgot, so when we arrived to Melbourne and booked airport transportation, we had to get dropped off a couple of blocks away because the bus could not park in front of the building. The decor is young and bright and as you walk in through automatic sliding doors, there's a reception desk and a large foyer space. On this main floor of the foyer, you have some couches and tables, guitars and games for guests to use, a bathroom, a TV room, and an internet room. They also have someone who helps with any tours/activities you may want to do that's affiliated or located right across from the reception desk. Unfortunately, this person was on holiday during our stay so can't say how good offers would be but heard person was great. Everyone working at the hostel was very friendly and it seemed secure. Doors are locked at 10pm and in order to gain entrance, you ring a bell and someone physically lets you in, unlike other hostels where the keycard will allow you access. There's a back patio seating area with a BBQ and designated smoking space. The hostel is 3 floors and does have a small elevator that is not lightning speed but works. We booked a private room with our own shower for 3 people which was close to the same price as most other guests were paying and the same price at all the other hostels we stayed at. We booked ahead of time online and paid about $32/night per person to have our own room/bathroom. Most people we spoke to were paying around $28-30/night for shared accommodations so we felt this was a great deal for our privacy. The room had a double bed and a 2-bed bunker. The bathroom was clean and offered towels and some basic toiletries like shampoo and soap. Water was hot and everything worked. If you've stayed in hostels before, you know what I mean. Even in Australia, some of the other hostels we stayed out didn't have warm water so everything about this place seemed luxurious! There was a coffee maker and there were storage lockers under the bunk bed with a place for a lock to secure your belongings. There was also a TV and AC and there was free wifi with a limit on how much data you could use daily. It's a small amount but you could also pay for additional wifi. NOTE: if you purchase more data for wifi, there is an expiration date of 24hrs, so if you don't use up the data, the session you paid for will still expire and you will have to pay for additional days or data. The ambiance was good and people staying there seemed to mingle and hang out. They offer beer/drink specials in the evening and have activities on different days at night as well. You cannot bring your own alcohol/beer to the hostel so you must purchase alcohol from the hostel. We stayed at 4 other hostels in Australia in Sydney, Adelaide, and Alice Springs and this by far was the cleaniest, friendliest, and best one! If the other HQ hostels are all affiliated, then I'd highly recommend this group of hostels. I'd definitely stay here again anytime!

Booked myself into MIB for a week through the Hostel world website. Needed to confirm my booking…read morewith them via email and it was easily and quickly done. Shared a 6-bed dorm room with others as well as another friend. We arrived far earlier than the 1PM check in time so left our luggage in their many pin-code lockers on one side of the kitchen/ communal space. This was a wide spread, long table set up with a full kitchen- where they have free breakfast every morning- though I didn't take them up on this in order to experience Melbourne's cafe breakfast/ brunch scene (sure it would be a highlight for some other travellers) They have a well-manned reception desk that is only closed for a one hour block once in the afternoon and once at night. We got a key card and linen, blankets (extra allowed for the Melbourne winter cold) and pillows. Hadn't packed a towel either so paid for one that was changed daily for free (a deposit which I got back later, which was a neat surprise). 3 bunk beds with a lockers on each side of the room (nice to have, though we didn't use it) and a few (2) power outlets (only wish they had a few more for our room of 4/5 travellers). Had a fair few late nights so was nice to have the come as you go, 24 hour access. Also spent a few hours in their reading room- which had cool event posters up and comfy couches and a decent bookshelf with a range of books. Saw they had washing and drying facilities though I did not need it as well as mail holding/forwarding, faxing and printing services. Chose this hostel in particular as it was the closest to an exam facility on La Trobe street- but in general it was a great distance from the Melbourne CBD and close to a range of cool things to do and places to eat. Only wish they had free wifi! Though it wasn't too expensive for approx 30 mins of data before it runs out. Checked out just before 10am but were allowed to stow our luggage in those lockers as well as use the bathrooms again before our shuttle pick up. Recommend this backpackers for sure- in general, a great one with cool people!

Due to online booking seemingly not being aligned with the hotel availability we had to move rooms on our last night and as a couple ended up in a room with 2 bunkbeds no window and no aircon when it was 35 degrees. The hallway smelt terrible, the toilets were quite a walk away from the rooms we were in. No lift so you have to lug your suitcases up 4 sets of stairs. This is a glorified hostel with hotel prices.

The building itself is bright orange and superbly clean and well maintained. There are bright lights and friendly people at the counter when you first walk in. Accommodation is upstairs so to get to the bar area you want to walk in the big front doors and make a sharp left. After passing through another set of glass doors - you're in! There is a long bar running down the right side of the rectangular room and plenty of couches, benches and stools to rest upon. The end of the room opens up into an outdoor area with a couple of tables and large sun umbrellas. On sunny evenings this is a great spot to sit if there are no smokers present, otherwise there are a heap of great spots indoors. The decor is pretty modern and the bartenders mostly foreign. When I went there recently I had to wait about ten minutes to get a Lemon Lime Bitters because the girl serving me had no idea what it was. It was a little annoying but at least I got to teach her something I guess. The atmosphere in here is amazing. There are all sorts of cool and interesting people and if you come when there's a big game on - no matter what the sport- don't ever, EVER walk in front of the projector screen. All hell might just break loose. Amongst all these great people are groovy machines like a video jukebox that plays music videos on screens around the room for just $1. There is also this weird gaming machine that allows you to play scrabble, deal or no deal, cluedo and more. It was totally awesome....except for when I lost about fifteen dollars trying to figure out if it was Colonol Mustard in the library with the wrench. (It wasn't). I'd recommend this place for casual drinks with friends or an after work get-together. It is very chilled and relaxed.

Now the not so great: I stayed in a room of 4 females and the room itself was small and narrow. Someone had placed their large suitcase right by the door so there wasn't much room to get in. Also, on one of the empty beds, the sheets were in disarray so I did not feel comfortable with that. Of course I chose the other bed to sleep on. The rest of my stay, that one bed was never cleaned even though I mentioned it to front desk and cleaning person. It definitely made me feel uneasy. At least I did not stay in the room much... Really only to sleep. In addition, the communal bathrooms were pretty messy, but showers were not too bad. Front desk staff was friendly enough. I met some nice people and had some lovely conversations while on the rooftop. I might consider coming back to stay here, but would look into other options first.

They do have a no-sleeping bags rule, which I failed to remember after switching to a bottom bunk that had been previously occupied by a dude who snuck a sleeping bag into the hostel the night before. The staff were very supportive and understanding through the whole process. I of course moved out of the hostel, but they only charged me for 1 of my 2 nights stay and also paid for my over the counter medications. I've never heard of a hostel doing that anywhere else. They also quarantined the room once I left, which I think shows a genuine concern for their business and guests. All class. I've learned not to trust hostel reviews regarding bed bugs. Every hostel eventually gets bed bugs. It's a common problem with traveling from place to place. The difference is how the hostel handles the situation once it has happened. And the Beach House passed the test with flying colors. Give this place a shot! Before the mishap, I was having a blast! Found this hostel through hostelworld and though initially only booked 2.5 weeks here- it's now my 2nd month starting here. It's a great place that feels more like a shared house vs a hostel. Partially due to its small size- only about 20 ppl here and the biggest room is only for 6 ppl. But also most of the ppl end up staying here longer than intended so you get to know them better. The manager of this place Matt - also lives in the premises and is a super fun guy. He organizes events for the guests and is very helpful in general. To add to that: WiFi is included into the price of accommodation and always runs smoothly from anywhere in the building (incl backyard) and there is also lots of kitchen space. This is definitely a great deal! And amazing people:)
