Would have been nice to also prebook my seat. The cinema needed a vacuum and a clean as it seems they just played back to back movies. The thing that saved the rating was it was almost empty so finding seats wasn't difficult. All in all a reasonable experience. Lost a star due to cleanliness on the night and not being able to prebook my seat after paying a premium.

With so many of Sydney's indie cinemas long gone, Glenbrook has made a perfect niche for itself, showing everything from the latest blockbuster to world cinema releases, all mostly with a run for a single week. So you have to be organised to make sure you don't miss something, but at $10 for all tickets (yes, really) you can even take a risk on showing up and seeing whatever's on. The screen does not block out all concept of peripheral vision, the sounds is not felt in the solar plexus rather than heard, the seats comfy and you can get a cup of coffee in a real cup and saucer with a bikkie on the side. Session times vary, so check the website. And the staff are lovely. I saw 'Agora' here recently and no-one pointed and stared at the poor weeping lady overcome at the fate of female philosophers. I'll be up again this week for 'Jane Eyre', being a sucker for corsets, repression and windswept moors in close proximity. No laughing if the urge for Kate Bush dance moves becomes too much, please.

You're better off getting into line with everyone else because it takes longer than if you don't. Also I accidentally booked the disabled seats (this is what happens when you drive and book on your phone) and had to get our seats changed at the last minute. The lady at the counter was nice enough to give me seats somewhere else, but their machine refused to print the tickets and took her a whole 10 minutes to finally end up just writing on some paper. I realise it's not her fault but it just added to the whole fail experience of everything else. There seemed to be no stock of lids for drinks by 9.30pm - come on guys, you have a whole heap of people who work there, stocking things that have run out shouldn't be this big a deal. But the place smells like a urinal. It honestly does. All you need to do is follow the urine smell to find the toilets. And it's not even a smell that's near the toilets!! It's in the middle of the walkway you take to walk up to the various doors of the movies. The stench is horrible. Otherwise there was no toilet paper in the toilets but at least the movie theatre was clean. 1 out of 5 ain't bad right? Yeah. Poor form.

Every time you visit a soulless megaplex after your time at Hayden Orpheum it will be a singularly disappointing experience bereft of any aesthetics or cultural value because really, how can anything compare? The cinemas are stunning art deco, they sell old-school choc tops, there's a solid program of the latest blockbusters and art house / doco fare, and they have insanely fun cult classics like a monthly interactive showing of the word movie ever made, The Room. There are love seats in the main cinema, and a freaking organ that rises up out of the floor for matinee performances. I know right! What what all the way. Best.

The Orpheum has kept it's gorgeous original deco interiors and exteriors intact, and the last time I visited (John Cleese triple bill including the Life Of Brian on Easter Sunday- kudos Orpheum!), there was a vintage pianist playing the grand piano in the lobby. I would love to see a silent movie thing here and I would bet money that they do them, it's that kind of place. Check out retro cinema Sundays- awesome and affordable triple bills that people dress up for. Old school wholesome entertainment, I love it.
