Hello fellow, yelpers - many of us are foodies who just can't get enough of great flavors, textures, cuisines from around the world... in addition to being foodies many of us also love art, music, poetry, literature... When you've had your share of food and culture I suggest you beautify your home with the wonderful plants from United Plant Growers on the west side of Long Beach. This freeway-friendly location offers amazing deals and a super amazing selection / variety. The workers are helpful although it's largely a do-it-yourself operation. Walk the yard, walk the greenhouses, walk across the street where there are bigger plants, bring a sun hat, bring boots or shoes that can get muddy, and have at it! You will undoubtedly load up your cart with many wonderful and luscious plants that are seriously, 1/4 the price of Home Depot and H& H nursery. You will seriously love this place. Very large selection Good prices Wear shoes that can get dirty and that are comfortable because you might do a lot of walking- the place is huge. Unlike a typical nursery there is no shop or store with a register in it. Look for the guy by the gate on the East side of the street when it's time to pay. read more

I still love this place and go at least once a month. I buy flowers, vegetables, bark nuggets, bags of soil and composted manure. Do not come here expecting the level of service and attention you would get at a specialty nursery or Armstrong Garden Center. No one is going to greet you at the gate or ask if you have any questions. This is strictly the type of place you can wander around for as long as you want, unbothered, and select whatever strikes your fancy and then be amazed at how cheap it is compared to the big box stores or neighborhood nursery. That said, Pablo and the other guy that handles checking out have always been nice to me, even loading large bags of soil into the car so that I don't have to. read more

I truly have no idea how I ended up here on the morning that I did, but by the time I left in the afternoon, I couldn't have been happier! I was driving home from PT and kinda felt like I needed a 19th plant to add to my indoor selection or possibly a flower to plant outside in my yard. I spent several hours walking around, well there was a point where I found myself on a moat that I couldn't escape without sacrificing my white sneakers/white jeans (don't ask how I managed to get on the moat) and was rescued by Tony who was operating one of the golf carts! The feelings I had once I was able to board the cart (with not only myself, but my small dog and the 7 dahlias I was trying to narrow down to 3) was a mixture of embarrassment and gratitude. It took a good hour and a half to pick the 3 I wanted and I brought them to another guy on a golf carts (can't recall his name but I think he maybe one of the owners) and he gave me the total, I about fainted! The price for 3 full plants was $8.50 which only meant one thing...I WAS GETTING ALL 7! I was so thrilled, which meant my dog was beside himself with excitement (doesn't take much for him) that I ran for the remaining 5 and straight into the water that surrounded the moat Great nursery, amazing staff and unbeatable prices! The so called manager is rude, has poor customer service, and tried to up charge me. I called before going and the lady on the phone gave me a lower price for the exact plants he was trying to charge more for. When asked he just said "i don't know who you spoke with", I told him lady answering the phones. He kept arguing with me, but then agreed to honor the price given to me. Needed to buy the plants today for a landscaping project, if not I would have NOT bought anything from him. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. read more

MONARCH POISON!!! I've bought milkweed sourced from United Plant Growers that ended up being extremely toxic to my monarch caterpillars and ended up killing over 15 after only a day of being put on the plant to eat. This was extremely frustrating and I hope they would communicate this to the public if they're using some kind of pesticide or strong fertilizer, both of which can easily kill monarch caterpillars. read more

So so cheap! I bought a bunch of herbs and succulents for $30! Small containers are $1 and the next size up is $2. Way better quality and selection than you would find at home depot. Plus all the plants look happy and healthy. Only downside is that some of the workers aren't willing to help. We asked where the rosemary was and one of the guys said with an attitude, "I don't know" then went about his business... a little awkward but okay. But the guy who was doing all the transactions was really nice and helping us organize our plants. That made up for the other rude worker. I would definitely come back read more

This is a good nursery. Was difficult to find someone to help. You park on the street and walk in on the right side. Someone is on a cart who collects money. I went there for vegetable plant starts and was not disappointed. They had a good selection of different maturity levels. Came here in the afternoon to pick up some plants for our backyard after reading great reviews. I spent 20 minutes walking around with no one offering to help and then finally when I walked up to the three guys lounging in the shade (literally with their feet kicked up and no shoes on) to politely ask for help they told me to go find their boss who was on the opposite side of the nursery on the other side of the street. I feel this place is a hidden gem! There are two sides to this nursery. I believe one side are for plants, trees, and bushes... More year round options. The other side is more for seasonal plants and flowers. I don't remember how I learned about UPG (aka "Gomez Growers"), but I've been a faithful customer for years. The exit off the freeway is a bit tricky but other than that, it's a no-brainer to buy your plants and seedlings here. You could walk around for hours and not see everything. Prices are great. Just went here yesterday looking for a snake plant (aka mother-in-law tongue) and I showed up pretty surprised at how big this place was. The gardens are on both sides of the street and everything is beautiful and so well-maintained. A 5 gallon snake plant at Lowe's/Home Depot was around $27.00 and had to be ordered online. Here at Gomez, a 5 gallon one was $14.00 (although the girl on the phone said it would be $11) and there was a huge variety to choose from. They all looked super healthy so I snagged one and then asked one of the guys driving around where to pay and he pointed to be Pablo who had a credit card machine with him and everything, very nice guy. This place seems particularly good for people who are doing large yard projects and need several of the same kind of plant (or a variety). They also sell tons of flowers, succulents, larger plants (not sure about trees), etc. MUCH cheaper than other corporate garden supply places and you can tell they really care about taking care of the product. read more

The best nursery I have been so far. It's a huge open nursery , it occupies both sides of the street . Lots of choices when it comes to drought resistant plants and flowers . This is a cash only place . The workers are very friendly and honest , their prices are excellent! The succulents I paid are super cheap compared to other nursery . I got the snake tongue for $14, would have cost me $30 at Armstrong . Street parking only but you can bring your car inside the gate to load. I will definitely be back ! read more

I moved into a home that has lots of backyard space and I was overwhelmed. I paid Armstrong to come out and do a plan and give me a bid for what it would cost me, less any hardscape and any sprinklers. Plants and labor to put them in: over $7,300! Too much... My friend then told me about United, and I've repeatedly gone there since--everything is like a third of what one would pay, much cheaper than even at a box store (Lowe's, Home Depot)! This is a nursery where you have to know what you're looking for, but the supply is always good and the "money-changer" always pleasant. I have never had a bad plant--everything thrives... read more

This is a wholesale nursery open to the public. You have to drive in about a quarter mile west to find the vegetables and carry them to your car. Nothing is priced out there, but the workers can direct you to the right person to finalize the sale. Walk and drive carefully, wear your gardening shoes. read more

I came here "just to check out what they have" and left feeling both disappointed and extremely pleased. Disappointed because I had no self control and extremely pleased because I got so much for so little!! It's an extremely huge place that gets broken up into 2 lots, across the street from each other so they had plenty of options for me! My total purchase (for my first trip) was just less than $30 and that included 8 different types of vegetable plants, 1 bag (2 cubic ft) of G&B harvest supreme soil, about 4 or 5 little succulents and one plant. I think elsewhere, I've spent so much more for less. I've sent family here and they were just as pleased with the selection and price. Although there was a language barrier with some of the employees, the main one who I assume is owner was really nice and easy to talk to. I am updating my review because I have been back about four times since my initial review and have found the cashier significantly easier to find! Again, great plants, great prices (I bought 3 flats of veggies and some herbs for about $30, meanwhile Home Depot wanted $45 for 2 six pack of cabbages, 3 small strawberries, and 3 parsleys). The vegetables are all the ways towards the back of the larger side (a road cuts through the nursery) if that makes any sense. read more
