This is one of my go-to grocery stores whenever I'm in the area or have a break between classes. The layout makes everything easy to find, so I'm never wasting time in between classes. Glad to find this spot while staying at the nearby Moonrise Hotel. Sometimes when traveling solo, I like to load up on water so I don't have to drink out of hotel sinks during my stay. I was happy to find some fantastic canned cold brews as well, so I was covered with my "coffee before the real coffee" the next morning. I might have a problem. The vibe in here is good when you walk in, a little weird towards the back. I'm not sure if part of the back was open or storage, it got darker and more isolated. I reviewed United Provisions 10 years ago? And I gave it only 4 stars? Must be remedied! I now eat more international foods, though I'm still vegetarian and that limits me. United Provisions has turned into decent place to stop for a quick snack. When I stopped by last week, I bought 2 tornado relief fundraising mystery snack boxes. What a nice idea and so nicely presented. My cat enjoyed sitting on the wrapping paper. I've only unboxed one (the other is a gift). I don't want to spoil the mystery here, but I will add that I was a little disappointed that there were no chips or crackers in the box. However, the box value seemed quite good. read more

Super awesome spot for international specialty items. The only spot in STL I have found Thai basil, and spicy Thai peppers. Plus they include a plethora of other international spices, flavors, and goodies. Sweets, snacks, main courses, seasonings, oils, you name it they have world wide selections with an emphasis on asian ingredients. The selection is great. Additionally, the prices seem to be very reasonable--I don't know the going rate for Thai basil, but about $3 for a huge bushel seems pretty dang cheap to me. Went here with the BF after work. We were looking for Asian sauces and dumplings. The back of the store is completely where it's at, we found a good variety of non-pork dumplings reasonably priced and a couple of sauces to try in the condiment aisle. We missed the cafe portion items as we arrived to late but they had a refrigerated section that you could grab some items and re-heat and a couple items still under the warmer. That part of the store smelled AMAZING, we wished we could get there for lunch to try some of the fresh cooked items. The staff is literally just OK, depends on who is assisting. We had a staff member whom was rude who directed us to another line because her line was too long and we had to wait for the staffer to open up his line. Just work on your customer service, she could have just got on the phone and asked for assistance at checkout instead of being rude, that was a HUGE turn-off. Not to mention that parking in The Loop sucks! I recommend going to Pan Asia where they have a massive selection and in-house Asian restaurant that stays open later. read more

My love for kdramas have helped me to recognize so many things in Provisions. The buldak noodles are a personal favorite. If you want noodles without that firey taste try the jjajang. Also the banana milk that is extremely popular in Korean is good. It kind of tastes like a banana laffy taffy but better if that makes sense. The calpico lychee and white peach juices are so good. You could use those and make flavored martinis. The plum soju is so good and will definitely creep up on you. They also have a tropicial fanta flavor that is too die for. If you catch it in store be sure to try it. I went out on a limb and tried the crayfish lays absolutely not a fave. read more

The prices are a bit higher here than at other international grocery stores, given the location, but that's the main complaint I have. It's just so convenient to stop by here when I'm in the Loop with my family, and the carry-out sushi is such high quality for grocery store sushi. I have to give a special shout out to the staff here. One day I was looking for a brand of canned Narcissus stewed pork, which I haven't been able to find anywhere in St. Louis. Not sure if it was the manager on duty or owner, but he noticed I was looking for something and offered to help. We weren't having any luck in the aisles, so he went into the back to ask some of the other employees and even called around to Global Foods and Jay International to ask if they had the product in stock. I found a lot of their stuff more expensive than other Asian stores around and even in California. I would come here for snacks and their deli stuff, but not for staples like rice. This review is principally for the grab and go section, which is unmatched in the St. Louis region. I went before lunch time and they had gyudon, bibimap, rice balls, curry, takoyaki, etc already out and ready to pick up. In addition they had cuts of salmon sashimi, which are hard to find in the area. As someone who has moved from Southern California, I've missed having a "proper" Asian grocery store a la Marukai or H-Mart. We have other Asian and international groceries in the region that are fine to decent for dry and frozen items, but no where that came close to the lunch options that you could find on the west coast. I've always said that St. Louis needs a Mitsuwa or a Marukai, and that's still true, but at least now I'm missing those stores much less after visiting this store. I definitely will be a frequent visitor. Two things to note: it doesn't just sell Asian groceries, although the majority of the grab and go items seemed to be Japanese, Korean, or Chinese. And second, the prices are not the cheapest (many of the items there I've seen for slightly cheaper at other grocery stores), but they're still reasonable. read more

Yes, it is in The Delmar Loop and their are lots of college students in the area but you know that's part of the fun! It's nice and convenient if you are living in the city, however, there are better international grocers in the area (Global Market in Kirkwood). They've thinned out their Hispanic selection and cater mostly to the Asian population. I wish they would label their aisles better. It's hard to find the specific country you are trying to find. It's a smaller store in comparison to the other international grocers as well. It's also super clean, and there's never a long wait to check out. Employees are nice and mostly keep to themselves. You may have trouble with parking, but there is a small parking lot around the corner. It's often filled up though, so you'll have to find and possibly pay for street parking. This isnt my main grocery store, even though its in a rather convient location and does have a parking lot. The prices for everyday stuff are not the cheapest. HOWEVER, i love to come in, especially with friends, and check out all the international snacks and pick things out to try. My favorite is ankopan-red bean buns. Usually they have this brand that is also in the freezers, i think for about a dollar? But sometimes they get a batch in from Kim's Bakery, and for only a dollar more, those are buttery heaven. Im the worst and tend to buy those all up when i see them. Its also a good place to get singleserve odd drinks and hot sauces. And i buy my preferred rice in big bags there. read more

I really feel like I need to separate the UP cafe from the market. Although I love the little neighborhood market, I'm particularly in love with the Japanese cafe and coffee bar. Simply a very casual and friendly setting with lots of setting, a semi-private conference room area, and a sushi and coffee bar. You order at the counter, get a number, and they will bring you food to the table. And, this is actually a great place to do work with some outlets! Pros: 1) Free Wifi 2) Northwest Roast Coffee 3) Happy Hour Sushi (1/2 Off) Sushi EVERYDAY from 4:30pm-6:30pm. 4) Happy Hour Wine/Beer Specials 5) Spicy Katsu Ramen is Amazing 5) But you don't want a huge bowl of Ramen, the MISO SOUP is so different and allows you to determine how much MISO you want on your own. 6) Katsu BURGER and FRIES!! 7) Crab Rangoon is perfectly crisp 8) Deli-Sliced Sandwiches and Pizza if you aren't craving Asian 9) Lulu express dim sum in the hot to-go market 10) Homemade Dessert Bar. This store is an excellent blend of a Whole Foods type grocery store, with a mix of an ethnic market and a breathtaking selection of craft beers. It's not close enough for me to do regular shopping, but I can't resist popping in after a lunch or dinner at Mission Taco Joint. I'll be honest, the single bottle sales of craft beers and the ability to create a six pack has helped me create some cool gifts for various family members. This service alone makes me a fan. The best thing about this market is that location. It's dead center in the Delmar Loop; miles from any other grocery store which makes it great for Wash U and residents of the area. The coffee bar is mediocre and the desserts appear to be shipped in frozen...but they look pretty. Prices are comparable to most other specialty markets. Just what I've been waiting for! A grocery store I can walk to. That being said, knowing I'd walk, I'd only come for a few items at a time like milk or bread. (A half gallon of 2% runs about $2.09 and wonder bread was $1.99.) Of course some items are more expensive than typical grocers and they only have a small selection so it's name brand items vs having a generic to choose from, but I'm still happy to have a neighborhood grocery store. As an example, I purchase green beans as part of my dog's daily meals for less than $0.50 from Walmart, Aldi, or Shop and Save. At Schnucks I can often catch them around $0.60-0.80. But this store has two brands, one for $1.79 and another for $1.75. I also frequently purchase Mexican or nacho style kraft cheese. The Mexican was $5.19 compared to the mozzarella and cheddar packages that were $3.29 (however these are less than $3 with the choice of a generic brand purchase at other grocery stores). Yikes. Fresh vegetables and fruit were priced reasonably. And because it's a specialty food store, there is a lot of international food available. Various rices, noodles, frozen items, and more. Oh and yes, there is beer :) I may have even seen wine (no rum, vodka, etc). They have a sushi bar and a bakery with treats as well. There is no place set up for poultry but they will add a heated shelving area with rotisserie items and there is a cheese and meat area for fresh cut slices. No parking around, so besides foot traffic I'm not sure how they foresee getting other customers in the door but I guess folks get to all the other spots on Delmar just fine so they'll figure this one out too. read more

M husband called this place a glorified asian mini-mart/convenience store and I have to say he's 1000000% nailed how I feel about this place. Conveniently located for college students, there is limited selection of everything at like 200% mark up, including a small produce section. Basic things like Kewpie and rice vinegar are around $1-2 at J's or Olive or Pan Asia, but cost like $5 here. But randomly they also have Berkshire pork, and of course devote a generous amt of their precious square footage to ramen aisles. There is also the most mediocre selection of grab and go food, a microwave, and seating section, also at prices that are a little too high for cold grab and go. A lot of those things are better fresh and made to order. Things like ramen, onigiri, sushi, little side dishes. Interestingly, even though it looks pretty nice and new, it can't help but smell like an old Asian store. Like... five spice and cardboard and dried kelp. I mean... I get it, fresh things are expensive to keep, the location is super central, etc. Still, if this had to be my one weekly shopping destination, I'd feel super ripped off and limited by the selection on everything. But if I were still in college and lived nearby, I'd totally trade the 7/11 I had for a United Provisions any day. read more

I discovered that not only does UP have a great selection of grocery products, they also have amazing food! I came with some friends for lunch and ended up splitting the sushi lunch combo: spicy tuna and salmon avacado roll, and the thai chicken curry. The thai chicken curry definitely hit the spot. It was the right amount of sweet and coconut-y with some good veggies and chicken in there. The sushi, was suprisingly delicious for St. Louis. One of my friends said that UP has the second-best sushi in St. Louis (second to Nobu's), but I was impressed. The salmon avacado and the spicy tuna were different than I've seen made traditionally in Japanese restaurants, but they pulled it off. The fish was also really fresh (for St. Louis), and the salmon was so smooth and creamy. Now I just dream of eating sushi at UP all the time. UP has all your basic grocery needs and so much more! Sometimes even when I don't have a need for groceries, I like to just roam around here haha It's conveniently located for WashU students or just anyone living near the Delmar Loop. And to my fellow WashU students: they take Bear Bucks! UP is an ethnic grocery store with such a vast selection of items to choose from. I feel like any popular international food can be found here. The store is very clean and well organized too! They have a section with delicious pre-made food. There's hot case where you can find foods like rotisserie chicken, fried rice, and shu mai. There's also a cold case of pre-made food, and I think it's my favorite part of the entire store, because they have sushi!! There's a wide variety of sushi to choose from. If you're looking for something to take home and make yourself, they even sell sashimi-grade salmon, which I haven't been able to find elsewhere in the St. Louis area. The cold case also has a variety of asian dishes to choose from including items like katsu curry and bibimbap. You can also pick up some of your favorite Chinese dishes from LuLu Seafood. Another one of my favorite parts of this grocery store is that they source baked goods from local asian bakeries like Wei Hong, Kim's Bakery, and Saint Louis Filipino Bread. They do have a small parking lot across the street behind Mission Taco, but it's usually full during busy lunch and dinner hours, since it's a small shared lot between a bunch of businesses on the loop. But there's also street parking on the Loop and in the residential neighborhoods. But I guess it doesn't matter because in you live in the area and in order to get your Asian store grocery fix, with no transportation, you have to go here. Good job united provisions on overpricing your still to make colleges students more broke lol. Now that's my opinion if I was still in college. Anyways, I went in here over the weekend and wanted to get/try some stuff. I saw a box of spicy noodles for 30$ that you would find at Jay international, seafood city, even on amazon for only 12$. Talk about overpriced food! Lots of their stuff are overpriced but some stuff such as drinks are normal especially if purchasing by itself and not by the case.
