We took a trip to Appalachian Caverns on the second day of our trip and it became the 28th cave/cavern that we have visited in the US. We loved our tour here and our tour guide Roger was great! He was so funny while having a great balance of knowledge to share. We heard so much new information while on the tour and loved hearing about the bat population. We also got to see two bats while walking through. The bridges over the water were our favorite part. So beautiful! We highly recommend stopping in for a tour!

And President's Johnson's story is a true rags to riches story - literally, since he started his life as a poor tailor and ended up in the highest office of the United States. Andrew Johnson National History Site in Greeneville has four separate locations. You should start your visit at the Visitor Center, 101 N. College Street. In the Visitor Center is the gift shop, the presidential museum and Johnson's original 1830s tailor shop. You can also get tickets for the tour of Andrew Johnson Homestead there. In the museum you can also cast your vote if Johnson, who was the first President to be impeached, was guilty or not guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors. (The Senate acquitted Johnson.) Across the street from the Visitor Center stands Andrew Johnson's Early Home. Andrew and his wife Eliza lived in this house until 1851, when they moved into the larger Homestead several blocks away. Early Home's exhibition tells the story of Johnson's early life from his impoverished childhood and as an apprentice to his arrival in Greeneville and entrance into politics. The Homestead is located at 209 S. Main St. and the only way to see it is to get your ticket at the Visitor Center and attend the guided tour. This was the home of Andrew Johnson before and after his presidency and also his children and grandchildren lived there. The tour also tells the story of the slaves of the Homestead and that they stayed with the Johnson family even after the emancipation. The final location is the National Cemetery at 121 Monument Ave. Andrew Johnson is buried atop the Monument Hill wrapped in a United States flag, with a copy of the Constitution resting beneath his head. For anyone who loves US history, trip to Greeneville, Tennessee is a must.

I knew he had some difficulties, but his life is interesting. He went from being a tailor to the President. Life was hard back then, and he made the most of it. Very tumultuous time in our country. I consider these types of structures interesting and definitely qualifies as a roadside attraction and oddity in my opinion. We arrived mid-day to find a few visitors mulling around snapping a few photos and taking advantage of the free access. The Doe River below was filled with ducks and geese swimming and looking for a free handout, apparently they have become accustomed to the generosity of the visitors here. This is a well built bridge that reminds you of how things used to be built there aren't many projects now days that are built to last 143 years, although this covered bridge hasn't been in service since the Federal Highway Administration and the Tennessee Department of Transportation funded a $400,000 bridge rehabilitation in 2003-2004 at that time, it was closed to vehicular traffic and converted into a pedestrian-only bridge. It's definitely a survivor having withstood major flood events in 1901, 1940, 1998 and the horrific flooding in September 2024 and she still stands as beautiful as ever...

We got to see every room in the house, except the basement, which has wood floors. A painting over the fireplace was pretty cool. It was painted over with white paint years ago, and while the restoration group was taking paint "samples", they realized something was under the white paint, which turned out to be a painting. Only one piece of furniture was original to the house, which was a chair. We checked out the family cemetery, and walked down to the Watauga river which is actually in front of the house. This is the oldest framed house in Tennessee. Interesting piece of history.

The county is the last county to be formed in the state, number 100 in 1911. It was carved from portions of Caldwell, Mitchell, and Watauga counties. The original county seat was Elk Park, but after a public vote, the seat was moved to the centrally located Fields of Toe which was later renamed Newland in honor of Lieutenant Governor William C. Newland, who helped secure legislative support for the county's creation. The courthouse in Newland was completed in 1913 and is a striking Neo-Classical Revival and Beaux Arts design featuring a crowning cupola and Ionic portico. It features a symmetrical five-part façade. Inside, the original courtroom furnishings have been carefully restored, and the building retains its wide central hall and vestibule layout. Recent additions to the courthouse blend with the original design, preserving its architectural integrity while expanding its functionality. Adjacent to the courthouse is the former jail and jailer's quarters, now repurposed as the Avery County Historical Museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the county's past. It is a beautiful building and well worth a stop to tour. This one stands alone at the edge of the pavement, pointing not to something immediately visible but to a site more than a mile away, tucked deeper into the countryside. I didn't make the detour this time, but even from here you get a sense of how isolated early congregations must have been and how much intention it took to build a community around faith, language, and shared identity. The marker reads, "1 1/4 Mi. is the site of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and cemetery. Organized about 1807; reported in 1811 to the North Carolina Synod, and became charter member of Tennessee Synod in 1820. In its early years, services were held in both German and English. The church was disbanded about 1870." It is marker number 1A-79 and it was erected by the Tennessee Historical Commission. Just outside the center of Jonesborough, this marker adds a welcome layer of depth to a site that…read moreis easy to miss if you happen to arrive on a quiet holiday morning, as I did. The house itself was closed, which was a small disappointment, but the marker does enough heavy lifting to make the stop worthwhile and to hint at how much early Tennessee history is tucked into this one structure. It stands in a calm corner of town, the kind of place where you can picture the eighteenth century without much effort, and it rewards a moment of unhurried reading. The marker gives some history. "About one mile southwest of this location, this log house was built in 1777 by this officer who was a veteran of the French and Indian War and a major in the American Revolutionary War. He is buried in the family cemetery nearby. Andrew Jackson live here in 1788-89 while practicing law in Jonesborough. The house was moved intact to this site in 1974 to preserve it from demolition." It is marker number 1A-6 and it was erected by the Tennessee Historical Commission. The marker offers a compact but evocative glimpse into Jonesborough's frontier years, and it left me looking forward to a return visit when the house is open again.
