My grandson who is 18 and has the IQ of a 10 year old ran away from his group home and was on the streets for 3 weeks before he turned himself in to this hospital for some help. He asked them to call his Mom which they did and told her they would keep her posted about what was going on and when he would be discharged. I called to talk to him after 2 days and they said he was discharged and never bothered calling his Mom since they said he was 18 and did not need to even when they said they would. They gave him a fucking bus ticket to downtown Portland and out onto the streets. This liberal ass hospital does not care about the patient only about the money they get. Think twice about sending your love ones there. read more

This place is so incredibly lucky the attempt I made on my life after being discharged failed. What is the point of asking if I'm feeling suicidal and like self harming as I'm leaving if when I say "yes" to both questions, you don't acknowledge what I said and discharge me anyway? On a less major but also negligent note, they gave me hot chocolate with cinnamon despite me telling several nurses and doctors I'm allergic to cinnamon. Again, they're lucky it's a mild allergy. Another patient triggered a trauma response in me and a nurse treated me like I was overreacting when I started acting more anxious. The therapist, Bailie was the only good thing about this place. She was very sympathetic to my situation and also helped me reframe some of my self esteem issues. Thank you, Bailie! Yall are just begging for a lawsuit honestly. Do better. read more

Every time I come to this hospital they murder my soul. The!y are very kind and considerate but it all seems to be an act for them from what they say about you when you're supposedly not listening. They think I'm a fake person and a witch and they seek to destroy all my personalities and plot for what children ill be born into next. They are trying to wind up my existence on this planet instead of admitting that at 45 I'm still as good as a thirty year old. My family's experience with Unity Mental Health has been extremely disappointing and harmful. The quality of care is poor, and their staff showed no compassion, and no professionalism. They made false statements about my daughter that led to her son being taken from her -- claiming that her "values didn't align" with theirs. This kind of judgmental and unethical behavior has deeply damaged our family. Since being under their care, my grandson's mental health has worsened significantly, and they have never addressed the root of his issues. The psychiatrists appear disengaged, unmotivated, and seem to not truly care for their young patient, my grandson. Their lack of accountability and empathy has caused more harm than help. I strongly advise others, especially parents seeking care for children, to avoid Unity Mental Health. Their poor communication, lack of compassion, and questionable ethics make them unfit to provide responsible mental health services. read more

Genuinely one of the worst hospitals you could send an adolescent to. They will isolate you and keep you in your room every second you aren't in group. You can't talk to the other adolescents in the hospital, you can't sit in the lounge area, you can only leave to grab a book and then you are forced to go back to your room alone. They will feed you food off of dirty trays with leftover food from breakfast/lunch, they will tell you to put your problems aside while younger patients bully and harass you because they are, "going through more than you." They do not care about the genuine health of their patients, they put you on medication and send you out with no outside help, and when you try to contact them to get references or other therapies they will not answer. They sent a suicidal patient home with the method that the suicidal person was going to kill themselves, after allowing the suicidal person to take it into a restroom unaccompanied. Even though the suicidal patient never once raised their voice or hands to the staff, the staff forced the suicidal patient to be accompanied by their security goons in a show of physical intimidation and coercion that caused the suicidal patient great distress. Then as the shocked and broken suicidal patient was waiting for their rideshare to leave after being dared to commit suicide by the staff at Unity, the security cowards sent a robot to harass and intimidate the suicidal patient. read more

My experience at this facility has been very negative. The nursing managers constantly make mistakes with scheduling, yet they blame nurses for "poor performance" even when there are no real issues. Management behaves like a royal dynasty--trying to control every single action of the nurses, while contributing very little themselves. The workplace culture is toxic. Many nurses feel pressured to compete for the managers' approval instead of focusing on teamwork or patient care. Too many nurses are hired with not enough work, creating unnecessary tension. Instead of improving the quality of care, management gets rid of nurses who earn higher wages, which lowers morale for everyone. This place needs a serious change in leadership. The nursing managers are the root of the problem--they create division, avoid responsibility, and act like kings while doing little to support staff or improve patient care. read more

As a nurse who just had a young adult child in this facility I cannot express how appalled I am at the experience we just had. Our daughter was on about 10 days of a psychotic episode with complete disassociation from reality, including several suicide attempts in the days prior to bringing her to Unity. We convinced her to go for an assessment and she was 100% delusional during the intake: everything she reported to the psychiatrist was a delusion. The intake doctor and social worker refused to take our family history (schizophrenia) nor our daughter's medical history nor speak to a treating physician of our daughter. They only believed the delusional state that she was reporting. She was admitted on a protective hold to the Psych ER: She spend two full nights in psych ER waiting for a bed. We phoned about every 8 hours to get an update from staff and were only updated one time by the social Worker Stephanie on day 2. Stephanie reported they were proceeding with the delusional history our child had given and we would be included in the discharge process. We received no other updates. On day 3 we demanded to speak to the charge nurse when no one would talk to us, the charge nurse told us she also knew nothing about out daiughter's case. The charge nurse read her intake notes and that was the only notation in the chart. The next day we arrived at the facility to demand to be updated: We had verified each time we asked for updates that a release of info had been signed. We also requested a neurologist assess our child and her current treating physician speak to the team: all denied. Unity staff only spoke to the physchiatrist and therapist our daughter has been seeing who are positively re enforcing her delusional reality and enabling her to act on her delusions. While waiting for a report we were called by the nurse practitioner and told our child was being discharged that moment: If we had not been present at that time she would have been able to leave the hospital, in a full psychotic state poost suicidal attempts, with no medication. She has never lived in Portland and had no idea where she was due to the psychosis. She only had her cell phone with her and no means of identification nor her wallet. We asked for the discharge plan Stephanie the social worker had touted but that was a lie too. She was seen by a single nurse practitioner, diagnosed Bipolar without getting any other history and just given anti psychotics. No planning. We drove her to her college apartment after discharge in a totally delusional state. She did not fill her medication. She was told to call the local mental health resources if she needed assistance. She refuses to allow us tohelp her so we just have to wait until she is suicidal again to get her committed to the next place that hopefully will help her. As a nurse I am not allowed to discharge a patient from the hospital who does not have a ride. If any medication that alters decision making has been given in a normal hospital that person may only be safely discharged to an adult who will be responsible for them. YET Unity wants me to believe that are required by law to kick a 21 year old in full psychosis to the curb with no planning or ride home becasue she has rights. She has a right to be protected. She has a right to be treated with dignity and helped. My daughter loved the nurses so that is why one star is there. It's so horrific to see how this is the best psych facility in the state. read more

This place is disgusting, hateful, and abusive. They made me sleep in straight jacket chairs while I was injured with no bed option. The staff are judgmental and uncaring. I came there after my medical team said that I needed support for my mental health issues, yet they tried to say I had more physical issues in spite of my Medical Doctor's words. When they to tears, they uncaringly avoided eye contact as they fixed their no empathy gazes on their paperwork and told me I had to seek help elsewhere. They just don't care here. Review by adult psych staff After many (over 12) integral safety reports alerting to immanent safety risks were ignored, staff saw the lack of investment of management. The reason is unclear. By ignored, this meand that the internal system for reporting gave a message, perhaps automated thanking staff for reporting. There was no changes. Face-to-face reports were also ignored. The "trauma informed care" model was not implemented after minimal orientation. Some charge nurses thought that "nice" and "give pateints what they want" (often to avoid complaints) meant that they were actiing in a trauma informed manner. This is in no way the case. Trauma informed means that staff acknowledge that patients have been traumatized by the treatment environment, and so power is shared with and offered to patients. This does not mean giving patients unsafe ojbects, as happened repeatedly at Unity, depending on the staff person. -According to the person, not any implemented program. No program was implemented. How are the units recently? Lack of communication, depending on individual staff. Not an implemented program. The program was not implemented. In 2018, when Unity was threatened with being closed, staff were blamed for being careless. This was not the case. The 2018 article on Unity's safety reports differently. The solution seems to be invested upper management. So far Unity has not seen this. If there is a problem, staff wllll be blamed in a dramatic manner.This is competely avoidable. Just train staff and implement the program with a supportive approach. So many staff are ready to hear it, or will at least follow directions when they are clearly defined. This is indefensible in letting down patients in that staff could direct energy toward patient care, but instead direct energy to reinventing the wheel. The inequity among staff is a huge issue, and is a shock to the senses, but for a different review. Having said this, most staff are well intended. Some actively defend pliinly unsafe practices, telling co-wokers not to report unsafe conditions because maintaining safety causes more work. read more

I voluntarily admitted myself during a crisis with family who was being controlling and overly involved. I poured out my heart. I expressed needing rest and a break from life's stresses. Upon entering, the waiting room appeared very filthy. They insisted the chairs were stained. I let that slide and assumed it was true. I was moved upstairs into their ER atrium. The staff seemed kind but the atmosphere was upsetting sure to it being filled with people detoxing and moaning. This is where I must sleep? I took some breaths and did my best to rest in the lounger I was given. I spent a day and a half eating when served, meeting with their social workers etc. I'm a nursing mom so I required pumping sessions. At first I adjusted and felt better having slept when I could. Things got strange when the county worker came to let me know they would be holding me for 3 more days. There was no behavioral basis for this. Simply, the worker had heard things from my family (who hadn't seen me in a few days). He decided things that were TRUE were delusions and recommended a hold. I met with a discharge nurse but she wanted me to take psych meds. Aside from them being forced on me that week at the hospital, I have never been on meds. (the staff at the previous hospitsl didn't want to deal with me at all so even though I wasn't aggressive, they chose to knock me out around the clock. This is why I asked for a transfer to Unity since I knew if I wasn't being drugged and pushed around could recover from my recent trauma.) After the "health nurse" determined I should stay since she spoke to the county worker and he wanted me to, I had been informed I was likely going home. I was asked if I wanted a shower, etc and I did that and got ready to be picked up. They tried to throw me off their plan by pretending I was still going home. A staff member I'd never seen before showed up on the clock and proceeded to start taking over any request I had. He was a bit too eager to serve me. This made me nervous. I'm not normally a suspicious person but his behavior was odd. I started to question his motives calmly and the next thing I know, another nurse told me I needed to calm down. I wasn't uncalm. This alarmed me as I'd seen them tackle other patients. I had figured the patient must have done something but now their energy was aimed at me and it didn't feel normal. I attempted to move away from the security staff and backed up towards an exit. It was locked. I asked to go see the front desk. At this point, they have me surrounded. A friendlier nurse walked up and took my hand and led me out. But the weird guy who showed up followed. He had something in his hand. I was put in a room. No explanation. Then they came in to forcibly inject me. They were incredibly rough. Obviously I resisted the injection as it was out of nowhere. Then the guard grabbed my hair and smashed my face into the floor. I wrestled but didn't do anything extreme. I yelled that he hurt me. He then covered my mouth and nose tightly and attempted to stop my breathing. Now I was more scared than ever. I kept thinking they were trying to kill me. They were so aggressive. For months now I've been trying to rationalize this treatment because I couldn't fathom they just do this to people. Even if someone were psychotic, this is horribly abusive. This is not a restraining technique. I was given several drugs and knocked out for a full day. I made the best of the psych unit and was released one day later. This place is hell. Do NOT seek help here. They are ill equipped to do anything to help you. And if you annoy them, they will abuse you. The staff are all young power hungry jerks. read more

The psychiatrists that work here are very friendly but overall I would not recommend this hospital because there are a lot of rude nurses and no privacy for patients. Nurses do not check on you so if you attempt suicide you might die. They do not check security cameras even though they say they do. A teenage family member of mine was recently admitted to the Unity program and spent a few weeks at the hospital before being discharged. This was my first experience in such an organization and I was not sure what to expect. But, I knew my family member was not stable, even after years in the outpatient mental health field. We were struggling to find a definitive diagnosis that provided clarity and a pathway to a functional future. At the recommendation of a friend and licensed therapist, we decided to explore Unity. I went through every step of the process with them, from viewing the website, online reviews, to navigating the intake process with them. Every day for a few weeks I visited them at the hospital. Over that time I can confidently say the entire team went out of their way to be the most accepting, caring, non-judgmental help to them. The team planned for everything- with a safety-first approach, the team went through every step of the day, day after day, to ensure my family member was safe, respected, educated, and properly diagnosed. The team may have saved their life. A month later, today. My family member has improved dramatically and is experiencing a level of mental health they have never experienced before and they clearly have momentum towards continuing improvement. Life changing for the entire family. I want to point out the exceptional program as a bright spot in the healthcare system and community. I know there are negative reviews that may deter one from exploring any mental health facilities. This would be a mistake - your love one deserves to be cared by a team that has helped so many others through similar challenges. read more

I had a mental health crisis and I went to Unity. I let them know I was having trouble getting into my prescriber. Unity staff prescribed me two medications. I saw that as a red flag because how will you know what medication is doing what. I took them there per their request and went home. I had a pretty major drug reaction and was sent by ambulance to the hospital. The ER docs told me to keep taking everything as prescribed. I knew something wasnt right so I cut one pill to find the one that caused me a problem. I found which one in a couple of days and return to Unity. Unity refused me help and told me to go to my prescriber. At this point, I'm afraid that my mental illness will not be medicated at all and this would be catatrophic. Unity does what I call Half Helping. This was detrimental to me and I think you should be careful. read more

I know I've left a 5 start review before. But after coming in and out of Unity 5 different times with 2 stays over night... its definitely not the correct place , for anyone who is going through medication changes. The 2 overnight stays I do not remember being picked up the next day by my parents. Completely drugged with whatever Unity gave me the night before . I've gotten way to many different opinions on medications from medical professionals. From not being able to remember most of these visits now... after taking their original suggestion; IOP. I'm even more messed up. My ADHD is not being treated because the psychiatrist there told me to stop taking the ADHD MEDICATION; Adderall. Then, my psychiatrist said , no ; go back on it. Like I can't even make up decisions like this. I talked to my psychiatrist. Adderall isn't on my current medication list. I'm researching better treatment programs; higher than IOP. I have to go outside of Oregon to find it. TRUST your normal psychiatrist and not these guys. They will just drug you up and you will be as it more confused as I was. read more

Incredibly helpful and kind staff, facility was kept clean and well appointed with games; media like books on religious studies or poetry to magazines and a large TV on one side, two on the other... I genuinely only thought these places existed in fiction- where everyone is committed to things operating as smoothly as possible for people... I don't feel the actions of any.... uh... my fellows and peers whom i met there reflect whatsoever on the incredible grace and gentleness of the staff. But even then it was a calm enough time there was very little acting out or friction between patients while i was there. Couldn't be happier to have voluntarily checked in for a rough weekend after having an unplanned bad time. YMMV read more

I took a friend here and they did nothing for them. They explained that they were having suicidal thoughts along with other issues and they got released within an hour without any follow ups or referrals. They seem to not care about their patients and obviously are sending people who need help back outside without any help or guidance whatsoever. read more

I brought my loved one who was experiencing severe mental illness to Unity. We had had a terrible experience at another facility, Ranier Springs in Vancouver. In contrast Unity was professional, caring, competent, and did a great job communicating. Every interaction that I had with doctors, nurses, social workers and case, managers, and other staff was very positive, and they were always helpful and proactive. An inpatient mental health facility is a very difficult setting to manage and they easily become like prisons or work houses where the patients are treated very poorly. I have seen this myself at Ranier Springs in Vancouver and at other facilities. At Unity my loved one was treated very well and made very good progress, and the caregivers at Unity worked hard to transition my loved one to the best possible setting for continued recovery. We are all very pleased and I have very high regard for the program at Unity. read more

A little over a year ago I was in a terrible but temporary situation. Recent events caused me to become homeless, depressed, desperate. As a 62 year old female, I was terrified. It was pouring rain, I had a kink in my back from sleeping in my car (so bad I couldn't stand erect) and I just wanted to die it felt so hopeless. I looked for help and drove to this place. I've written a review about this place before. Pretty lousy response team. Fast forward over a year later and I'm doing very well. Great job, great apartment, plenty of money to live. I'm thriving because I pulled myself together. The reason I'm posting yet another review now is this: I just reviewed my medical records and there's three pages of information they wrote about me. They wouldn't help me in any way, not even offered a cup of coffee, but these supposedly well educated women took the time to write three pages worth of misspelled inaccurate information to be read by every doctor I see from now until I die. They made me look like a lying, drug seeking, criminal. The truth is I'm highly educated, was in a temporarily exceedingly difficult situation that was so awful I was afraid I might kill myself. They refused to help me solely because I hadn't attempted suicide in the previous 24 hours! Do. Not. Go. Here. No help and the record (quite possibly inaccurate) will follow you forever. read more

I was discharged way too quickly, I said I'd like to stay in in patient for a month and the Nurse practitioner said it wasn't feasible. If I had a chronic physical condition that was potentially fatal, I bet or at least hope she wouldn't say that. But it felt like the mental health 'professionals' didn't care at all. Fuck legacy, fuck unity. If you're having a mental health crisis going here will make it worse. Don't get me started on the first room you have to wait in that's just a room full of recliners. These people distribute to minors even if it's not medically necessary! My daughter was in there two months ago. The guy we saw, when filling out the intake paperwork, was in a hurry to get us in and out. He didn't even want us to fill out the paperwork completely. He basically said we were doing more than most people and it didn't matter. A couple days later a doctor from there called and asked us all of the same exact questions that were in the paperwork so that was a bit annoying. During her 7 day stay they gave her nicotine patches and gum. When we spoke with the doctor we agreed that she should stay on her current meds but not once did they say or ask about nicotine. My daughter is a 16 year old who had not had any nicotine in over a week but they asked her if she wanted it and she took it every day. Guess who gets to pay an additional $150 for nicotine? The two bills I received so far total $22,000. My portion is $2,500. I call up billing and am on the phone for 30 min who end up giving me the number to another lady who I'm on the phone with for another 30 min. I explained to her why I was calling. At first she said I need to talk to billing then she said she can't talk to me about the bill because my daughter is 16. The bill is in my name, I can see the charges and my daughter already told me they asked her if she wanted it every day. She says it was ok because she wanted the nicotine and they won't adjust the bill. I asked her what she thinks would happen if I go to the store and buy cigarettes for minors. They distribute to minors even though it's not medically necessary. Your going to ask an addict if they want something then they are going to take it. read more

While sitting in the reception area I witnessed violations of federal & state ADA service dog laws. A couple was attempting to see their child and was told by the receptionists, an RN, then by Unity's administration (a male identifying himself as the nursing supervisor) that they could not have their service dog in the facility. The reasons stated were: "disruption to the unit" (dog was under a chair - no disruption); allergies (violation of law as well as inaccurate since therapy dogs round on the units); fear of dogs (see above); against policy (violation of Oregon state and Federal Disability laws). The dog was wearing a bright red vest which read "service dog" on one side and the reason it was needed on the other. Administration asked numerous questions that are prohibited by federal and state laws & kept sighting a policy prohibiting animals on the patient unit (please read this: https://www.ada.gov/service_animals_2010.pdf & this https://www.ada.gov/regs2010/service_animal_qa.pdf). As you can see service dogs CANNOT be prohibited from this place. If this is the way they treat visitors who do not have mental illness and can speak for themselves, how are they treating those who are not able to articulate for themselves? I have been back several times since, and have witnessed the same treatment as described above to the same couple, four different times. The last time I overheard an administrator tell them, "If you want to see your daughter then you will comply with our rules!" I was shocked to hear this! Unprofessional! Grossly inappropriate! Illegal! The poor mother looked so embarrassed. In addition, these people made her cry. Who wants the entire reception area to know their intimate health information? Yet what choice did she have - answer their invasive questions or they would not allow her to see her child. How absolutely terrible! Then they made them see visit the child in a conference room. REALLY!? How therapeutic is that?! Other people get to see their loved ones in the patient room. I got to see my relative in the patient room. Think about this. How would you feel? What other discriminatory behavior occurs behind locked doors? How are the mentally ill really treated here? I am a stranger to this family and I now know a great deal about their personal health issues, what is happening with the family to bring the child here, etc. Would you want your personal health issues discussed with people who are NOT your healthcare providers in a reception area of a mental health hospital? I sure don't & yet this family had to or not see their child. This is despicable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Based on what I overheard I made some phone calls & asked some questions. This is what I learned: this facility, as well as other Legacy Health facilities, have therapy dogs that come around and visit the patients. Just so you know, therapy dogs aren't protected under federal or state laws but are allowed on the units, including ICU, ER, & locked psychiatric units. This place is very scary and one should think closely before putting your loved one here. My loved one did NOT have a good experience either. In addition, this place is asking the public for monetary donations (https://www.legacyhealthgiving.org/behavioralhealth). Since when does a multi-billion dollar health system need donations? Should people donate to an organization that believes themselves to be above state and federal laws? read more

I brought a friend in here who was having a mental health crisis. She's still in crisis. I had been her support person but was realizing I was taking on too much. I don't know exactly what happened after she was admitted but before I knew it, she was in a cab (they paid for) on her way back to my house. I had asked the social worker to call me and no one did. I heard the front desk didn't relay the message. I feel as though I was trying to keep my family safe and help someone in need but this person was sent back to my home without notice. They rule, and medicate, with a maniacal fist here. I was medicated here, by some guy who works in the unit who has anger issues... For putting a sign on each table that said, "Murder, no." I was blamed for erasing the board, which I didn't do, someone else did. I was just kidding around, geez. No sense of humor here. Repeatedly forcibly medicated, they woke me up, asked me a question, then dragged me into the seclusion room and shot me up AGAIN, instead of just LETTING ME GET THE SLEEP I NEEDED. There was a bright light in the seclusion room, I wasn't comfortable, and I was given some sort of special stiff blanket so I couldn't strangle myself. Like geez, did anyone ever tell Unity Hospital, patients need sleep more than anything else? Here at Unity Hospital, the policy is medicate, medicate, medicate. Sleep is not seen as helpful, or a necessity. Actually, when someone is dealing with mental health issues, sleep is the most helpful medicine... Try telling that to Unity Hospital, and it falls on deaf ears. Just look at the Pez, there are nothing but armchairs which are hard to sleep in, and you are kept there for several days. Someone should tell the higher ups here, patients not sleep, Haldol without sound sleep is NOT effective medicine. And fire the employee with a vengeful anger problem. read more

The staff here were irresponsible and mixed up my meds after forcing me to take them in the first place. They also used a tranquilizer on me without consent during an emotional crisis. This place is a hell hole. Your kids are not safe. read more

Because of all of the negative reviews I was afraid to use Unity as a resource but I am so glad I did. Everyone was so accommodating and nice. The team was kind, compassionate, empathetic, and overall very good natured.
