As a veteran living with PTSD, trust is something I have to earn carefully. Before I enrolled,…read moreMaster Kim told me that he and his brothers had spent many years training U.S. Army soldiers in South Korea. As a veteran, hearing that mattered to me. It made me believe I was placing my trust in someone who understood veterans, integrity, and honor. Unfortunately, my experience was the exact opposite. I prepaid for a three-month Kendo program. When I enrolled, I was told I would not need a uniform for four to six months and that protective gear would come even later. Within two weeks I was being told to buy a uniform, and by the third week I was being pressured to prepay for an entire year. Those broken promises immediately raised concerns, and I stopped training after about three weeks. After months of repeated follow-ups and having to go to the dojo in person, my uniform was finally ordered. When it arrived, I was told it had been given to someone else--even though I had already paid for it. I was also promised a partial refund in March. That refund never came. I later returned to try to complete the training I had already paid for, but the class was disorganized. Students were unsure of forms, and even basic equipment was forgotten during instruction. I walked out. For most people, this may sound like a dispute over money. For me, it wasn't. As a veteran with PTSD, I trusted Master Kim because of what he told me about training U.S. Army soldiers. Instead, I experienced repeated broken promises, constant pressure to spend more money, and commitments that were never honored. That experience severely triggered my PTSD and sent me into one of the darkest periods of my life. The emotional impact became so overwhelming that I reached out to the Department of Veterans Affairs for professional mental health care because I was afraid of where I was heading. I cannot say what Master Kim intended. I can only describe what happened to me and the impact it had on my life. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this dojo. If you are considering training here, ask detailed questions, get every financial commitment in writing, and carefully consider whether this is the kind of business you want to trust.

Things were good at the first couple of months, but after that it was just money money money. Instructor makes changes without any notice, there's no reimbursement and he always finds a way to get more money out of your pocket, uniforms, equipment, tests, etc. When you first sign up he says one thing and a week after he says something else. I had no experience at all with enrolling my kid in classes or anything and what to expect from it.

Yay!!! I just got back from my first class! It was so much fun! Wow! What a workout! The teenagers…read more& young adults were very respectful... You know how some of the younger generation can be pretty snarky, these fellow students were not that way at all! They're pretty cool! (Update: I've been to several classes already & they seem to keep things moving & I'm learning a lot! And sweating alot! Haha...) I could tell that Master Lee has taught them well about respecting self & others! It shows & was so refreshing to see such respect & kindness from the instructor & other students. I was definitely the newest in the class but kept up pretty well. There were a few times that I got tired & had to pause a little. That's ok...I didn't get any stink eye... Hahaha o.O Mostly everyone was so flexible & agile! I can't wait to get there too! Who couldn't use more flexibility?!?! =) The week before class, I dropped by & saw Master Lee & another instructor leading the little kids in class. That was great to see! As I waited, I also sat next to a nice lady & she told me how beneficial Taekwondo has been for her son & husband & their family. I can see what she means by just taking one class! Once that class was over, I was promptly met by Master Lee & we briefly discussed the program & costs & such. I paid & received a uniform. Then I showed up early for class... Let's do this again! Some info you'll need to know if you're a first timer: Shoes aren't used during class, you'll take them off before you get on the mat & store them in a cubbyhole. I wore flip flops for ease of putting on/off. You can bring water...I did & good thing! I found it necessary! You'll sweat up a storm & need to rehydrate. Bring a towel, you're gonna sweat a ALOT! Be early, Keep your nails cut short, Wear a clean uniform & Master Lee will guide you through the rest! It is a warm & friendly environment. Gamsahabnida USTT!
