I would like to start this by saying many of these issues derived from this facility being severely understaffed. I have made a separate account to review in case I ever have the misfortune of returning. Also, there are worse facilities than this one. But, I was very disappointed in my recent experience. I have been a patient at University Behavioral for nearly 10 years. I have seen the adolescent unit, I have seen the crisis/banker act unit, and this last time I saw the recovery unit. Finally seeing how the recovery unit operates made me very upset. While other patients had their complaints, as they should, they had no idea how good they had it. The recovery unit has multiple groups per day. They have snacks, coffee, drinks, books, and board games readily available. It's where you want to be if you're admitted here. Basically, there are plenty of distractions in this unit so your stay is tolerable. The techs treated the patients with respect. This was not the case for the crisis unit. They are so understaffed. That unit is being extremely neglected. I understand why there isn't fresh hot coffee, and there isn't many boardgames, there are people in the crisis unit that could use these things to hurt another person. What I don't understand, is how you can only have one group a day, and leave us to do absolutely nothing else. You had to beg someone for something to read to pass time. There is zero mental stimulation for these people who are in crisis. They are left there to think and talk to each other. Which, in my experience, is the worst thing for someone confined to that unit. Those people deserve distractions as much as the recovery unit does. Why were there no soft cover books to read? Why did we only have one group, maybe two? For the rest of my last day on the crisis unit, we sat un that day room for hours just talking to each other. Sometimes there wouldn't even be a tech in the room because again, they are understaffed and sometimes they are by themselves. I had to find ways to distract myself. If I, a person with some type of mental capacity, found myself feeling like an animal trapped in a zoo, imagine how the worse off patients feel. They walk around and around, antsy, pissed off and ready to blow up on anyone who bothers them. These people need more mental stimulation. They need to be distracted by what is going on in their lives. Groups help talk things out and help patients connect with each other. Things to do reduces feelings of anxiety. If you treat someone like an animal, they will act accordingly. I'm not even going to get into staff being on personal phone calls in the day room, or talking in full volume in the middle of the night, or faculty laughing at patients experiencing episodes. It's like you don't get a moment to breathe in the crisis unit. I feel terrible for those still stuck in there. I have met some of the most intelligent people on that unit. You people treat the recovery unit with more respect because there is a mix of people who are paying to be there. This facility needs to have the same respect and decorum with the crisis unit. Give them things to do, give them someone to talk to if they are sobbing. Let them watch a movie or two during the day. Something. I will never understand the vast difference between these units. People are starting to pay attention to your facility, as you are one of the only ones accepting Medicaid in the area. And instead of taking the opportunity to be a tolerable facility, you have chosen to neglect it. Just because most of your clientele are Medicaid recipients doesn't make them any less deserving of respect. It doesn't mean you can operate at a lower level. I saw a psych for a whopping 5 minutes, for one day. It was on a one way video call. They made me sign that I saw them daily. What a joke. I can tell some of the faculty is as frustrated as I am. Do better for your staff and your patients. You already have several people trying to sue this place. How much worse is it going to get before there is some type of reform? read more

ONE-STAR REVIEW My wife was admitted to University Behavioral Health Center in Orlando on July 16. Our experience was disturbing, and I cannot recommend this facility. She slept on a paper-thin mattress with two thin pillows and two blankets that did not keep her warm. Staff repeatedly shined a flashlight toward her eyes at night, waking her. During the day, bedroom doors were locked, patients had to ask to use the bathroom, and they were not allowed to sleep or rest in dim lighting. They remained under bright fluorescent lights with no outdoor time. She had to repeatedly ask for toilet paper and wait for basic hygiene products such as deodorant. Bathing supplies were available only during designated times, and two roommates had to coordinate showers within one 30-minute period. Despite the restrictive environment, group therapy reportedly occurred only once or twice daily, and her psychiatrist visits lasted about five minutes. The facility has a pool and gym, but patients were not allowed to use them. Phone access for the entire unit was limited to three shared 30-minute periods per day. Adult visitation was only one hour, twice per week, in the gym. Visitors had to set up folding chairs and could not bring cellphones inside. Most concerning was the confusion surrounding her rights and discharge. She said she was not given a copy of her rights at intake. She felt pressured to change her status from involuntary to voluntary and was led to believe this was necessary for discharge. She was then told a discharge request would immediately be denied and could begin a court process to hold her longer. She was not offered an opportunity to contact an attorney before making these decisions. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Staff gave us contradictory information. My wife was told she would be discharged, but I was told she would not.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]She was later told her discharge was delayed because staff had not had time to call me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I requested updates, staff frequently seemed unfamiliar with her case.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] After an attorney became involved and an emergency petition for release was pursued, she was released immediately. The timing raised serious concerns for our family. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Some nursing staff were rude and dismissive, treating vulnerable patients like criminals rather than people needing compassionate care.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Mental-health patients deserve sleep, warmth, hygiene, clear information, meaningful treatment, access to their rights, and basic dignity. I am consulting legal counsel, exploring potential collective legal action, and plan to speak with my state senator about patient rights and compliance with Florida's Baker Act. This facility should not be allowed to operate. A disabled patient with degenerative disc disease, severe chronic pain, and multiple prior back surgeries was involuntarily committed under the Baker Act. The Baker Act was weaponized by his wife during a contentious divorce. She used it as a tactic to force him out of the marital home and gain an advantage in seizing marital assets. He had shown no suicidal ideation or dangerous behavior -- only wrote a respectful letter expressing sadness about their situation. While held there for over 6 days: * He was denied his prescribed pain medication from his pain management doctor. * Forced to sit in a folding metal chair all day and sleep on a thin foam mattress on a metal frame bolted to the floor. * Not allowed to have underwear or shoes. * Forced to sleep with the lights on at all times. * Received zero meaningful therapy -- only brief 8-minute meetings with technicians and group sessions watching pre-recorded videos and given faded PowerPoint presentations on coping skills, .His treatment was not curated to his specific needs or challenges. He filed a Request for Release (ROR) and was coerced into withdrawing it with threats of re-Baker Act and insurance denial. He also missed an important job interview for a position he had been pursuing for months. He resubmitted it, stood his ground for the required 24 hours and the facility failed to file the required paperwork to continue to retain him. Yet, the refused to let him go which does not align with the Florida State Law. This is not healthcare -- this is mistreatment of a vulnerable patient in severe pain. My wife was in there after suffering a breakdown, and it's evident they were just there for the money. They run it like a penal institution, no guidance, and she was there for a week and saw a doctor once, and refused to discharge her on the weekend because the doctor says he doesn't release over the weekend, I think it's just to bill the insurance company. She is fine now, but we are going to the TV news and seeing a lawyer. These people need to be investigated. I know that some of the things she told me about this place are probably against the law. And when the EOB from the insurance arrives, we will review it for any false charges. Don't let someone you care about, or love be confined there. It's run like a penitentiary. Bad food. I am process of filing legal action against this place. I was assaulted 4 , times while I was there. $2000 cash along with many items of clothing were "missing", I never received an compensation or was given the opportunity to be reimbursed. The nurse, on Harmony, Sheila assaulted me and another assault occurred by an orderly that put me in a medical hospital for a few days. That visit required a CAT scan and MRI. They actually expect my health insurance to pay for over $100,000 plus bill due their violence on 57 year old 5 ft tall grandmother is unbelievable! These people just want help not to be treated like animals, it breaks my heart.The reasons why i had a horrible experience personally is because one they drew my blood without my moms consent, i believe my mom even told them not too. i was also out on the boys side for the first night i was there. They don't even allow boys & girls to be together at all. except when eating if i remember correctly. Also this might have changed within the years because people have started to advocate for it which i love but the paper scrubs is insane. So easily rip able it's just horrible. i felt so dehumanized. This place is a scam. They did not help me with a severe mood disorder. Falsely claimed they did an evaluation. I am on supplemental oxygen and the left me tethered to a stationary unit. I developed blood clots in my lungs when I was there, because they refused to allow me a unit that I could walk around with. Their lack of medical knowledge was very scary. The doctors walk around and talk for just a few minutes and claim they are giving medical attention, when the truth is they are giving patients the bare minimum. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I told the psychiatrist I was having trouble sleeping, and because he saw me out cold after a sleepless night, he assumed I slept all night like that. I tried to explain to him that was not the case, but he cut me off[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. I had very serious anxiety issues and he wrote off as having emphysema when it was more than that. But his explanation allowed him to do nothing. That is exemplary of the medical treatment you will get there. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The staff does not listen nor pay attention. They only see and hear what they expect, not what is actual. They are authoritarian and don't listen to patients[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. [[HIGHLIGHT]]If you need to look for resources because of your situation on the internet, they refuse saying you should work on your recovery even though you're not there for substance abuse. Apparently, looking for resources to help you isn't important[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Ask for medical treatment that is being neglected there, and they will say they are not that type of facility which is crazy, because they are supposed to grant access to medical treatments that are necessary even if they have to use someone else outside of their organization. My husband is currently admitted here, voluntarily. It takes 10+ calls to finally reach someone and you can only speak to your loved one after 5 pm. My husband went in (mostly) mentally stable and yet has no idea what's going on, when he's supposed to leave etc. when I talked to him last he told me they were not giving him his medications that he was on before entering the facility (he's recovering from a 3rd degree burn / skin graft) you think they'd consider that.. nope. I had to call and bitch out whoever answered. Then my husband tells me he has no clue what meds they started giving him because they don't even tell him. This morning I went to visitation. (Which is only 3 days a week... understandable I guess) I was told 3 times prior by 3 different people that I could bring my 15 month old with me to see his dad. I come into the front and immediately denied because I have nobody to watch my son. I of course ask to speak with someone higher and I get attitude.... But my son got to see his dad. So that's nice... but why work there if you're going to argue about someone wanting to visit their family? Only pros is that there are a couple activities (my husband likes the workout center and the basketball court) and he says they serve decent meals. I will be updating once I finally get a chance to speak with my husband regarding his experience (whenever he comes home that is..) As a family member, I hate not having any peace of mind. I don't get updates, I can hardly get in touch with my loved one once a day (if that) .. and 90% of the staff is rude and seems to hate their job. They bring roommates in and out through all hours of the night,NO COVID PROTECTION. They put girls on the same hallway as the boys. Zero communication. None. For the love of god don't send anyone you love here and don't go yourself. I wouldn't even send my worst enemy here. This is a prison labeled as a mental health facility. The first thing they do is strip search you and make you change into scrubs. Even if you come voluntarily, unless you fill out a waiver that says you admitted yourself, they'll make you stay for the mandatory 72 hours. You only get 30 min - 1 hour outside time, tops and they decide when you go outside. Your only other options are watching Good Morning America (they don't change the channel) or color in coloring books. Staff is very rude and honestly bullies the patients. Men and women are not separate. They will "forget" or even refuse to give you meds you are previously taking such as birth control even if someone dropped it off for you. No individualized plan of action, only group therapy. You will see a psychiatrist once a day for 15 minutes and they will be the one to evaluate whether to extend your stay or not. You essentially cannot express any kind of emotion because even crying is considered "a form of insanity." You have to pretend to be as normal as possible in order to get out. You will need therapy just to get over this experience. If you don't already feel mentally unstable, this facility will 100% make you feel that way. Unskillful staff, disorganized, treated my mom like an animal.! They didn't give my mom her asthma pump or any of her clothes. A lot of miscommunication, nobody knows anything, and they didn't provide her a translator, which is unbelievable. The day of the discharge, she was waiting for me outside.! How is it possible that you are treating people that are seeking professional help like animals? They didn't call me to let me know what time she was discharged. She called me and then seeing her outside in this hot weather waiting for almost an hour was heartbroken! She looked like she didn't shower for days.! When you call and beg for information to multiple people so you can work on an after care plan, they will all say... someone will call you back but no one will. Please don't send yourself or anyone you love here. Upon intake, i was left in a lit room with hard chairs and a blanket for 8 hours. When asking the behavioral techs their background, most had worked in prisons before this job. One day i got frustrated at my situation and started crying, and the nurses yelled at me to say "DONT LET THE DOCTOR 32 YOU!" This means he can keep you for 2 more days without your consent!! When asking the nurses for a medication that helped calm me down (that I'd been on for well over 6 months) they refused. No family or individual therapy was given. Groups were lead by the techs which had no background in psychology or therapy. They gave you no privacy. If you said "hey, I have this coping mechanism that really works for me" they wouldn't let you do it. Most of the time we did elementary school level "Icebreakers" as our "therapy". There was no CBT or DBT performed. The psychiatrists there sat with you for a minute a day with no knowledge of your case. I have a psychiatrist and they refused to work with him or even ask him about my case. This place is a prison. Do not go here. You will not have anyone who genuinely cares or knows what they're doing. Plus, I was let out well after 72 hours when i showed no signs of being suicidal or a harm to myself. This place from personal experience was terrible. I asked for Neosporin because I scratched my arm open, they did give me anything for it. I got woken up at 11:15 as soon as I started to fall asleep just to see a doctor. I'm an insomniac I can't fall back asleep after things like that. I was told by admissions they called my insurance company and said that everything would be covered 100% only to find out they are charging me 250+ a day then on top of it the nurses are telling my child they have called me three times and I am not answering my phone they have not called not one time then my child was being diagnosed as being bipolar now she's being diagnosed as major depression disorder if you can avoid this place I would at all cost... I was also told that my child would speak with a counselor and everything went fine and she would be out of there that night come to find out now they want to keep her for five days that is the max the insurance will pay five days...I was also told that that night they would call me between six and 630 and give me the information on my child and I would come pick her up I sat in their parking lot for 3 1/2 hours then finally to call and be on hold for 40 minutes all to find out that no she had been admitted and they are keeping her for five days for posting a picture and stating she was suicidal all social media she's 14 years old and just starting high school it's called adolescence and the school told me to bring her there to be evaluated... nothing but lies and a sponge to soak up all your money.. durning this covid situation- no visitors or parents allowed in the building - you can call n talk for max 5 minutes from 5 pm to 830 pm only....... They broke their own rules and released my loved one without a direct doctor appointment! They dropped the ball and negated the positive effects of the treatment! As someone who was in this place for a little over a week if I'm remembering correctly it was TERRIBLE. My roommate was super kind and informed me that they let her know I was coming so she checked all day to see if they changed sheets from the person before me and they DIDNT I didn't fet clean sheets ever. I got 2 minutes to shower and I have very curly hair so I usually would just rinse off N not even bother trying to wash my hair. Treated like a literal animal. 2 ppl escaped while I was there. ANGRY PARENT All staff are trained to keep the beds full with insurance-covered patients. Do your research. I did, and I was shocked. UHS is the parent company of many local rehab lockdown facilities, and they are the worst offender. Do your research before surrendering your loved one to a place like this. My child was distraught in an isolated incident and should not have been Baker Acted. My spouse made the call from another room. When I realized what was being done, I yelled into the phone, "Don't Baker Act my child." But the machine had already been revved up, and before I knew it, police and firemen invaded my home, cuffed my child, and drove off. Please, if what you're dealing with is a one-off situation, do not do this to your loved one. With the help of a lawyer and by cutting off payment (key), we were able to get our child back. But now it's happened--can you relate to feeling heartbroken because of a breakup and spouting off that you'd rather be dead? Then suddenly cops appear, you're in handcuffs, soon after strip searched, then released into dark hallways in a place where others scream into the night, and you're scared and confused but no one will tell you what's going on. I have no idea how long it will take for my child to recover from this experience. read more

Really nice staff. I can't stress that enough. You only get out what you put in so that's probably why there's some negative reviews for ubc but my experience was amazing. The food is great for a hospital cafeteria, the salad bar is especially good. Group is helpful and there's lots of games/cards/activities to keep you busy throughout the day. The psychiatrists are nice but you have to be completely honest with them so they can help you best. I hope I'll never need to come here again, but if I do i know it'll be a good experience. read more

I would not suggest this place to absolutely anyone. I got backeracted there 3 times each time was hell and it just got worse. The girls and guys aren't separated they treat you like shit. It's literally a prison if u don't have clothes they either don't let anyone drop stuff off or they make you wear nasty hospital paper scrub like clothes the bed awful it's pretty much like a prison. They force food down your throat like that's gonna make you feel any better they have 1 time where u can do active stuff other then that you sit in a room for majority of your day. This was the WORST hospital I have every been to. The doctors were awesome, but I only saw them twice for about 15 minutes each time. The staff was completely awful. First of all, I checked myself in for more attention and increased therapy. I was not a danger to anyone. Despite this, I was treated like a prisoner (not that anyone in there who was Baker Acted should be treated any less either, just saying for all you stigma believers out there). Within my visit, I was constantly ignored and lied to anytime I would ask for anything. I would have to stand at the nurses station repeating "excuse me." over and over again, to no avail. Late in the first night, when I discovered this awful service, asked for a release for discharge form. I had to ask a total of 6 techs and nurses before I finally signed the form late the next morning! There were several times where I needed simple information from the staff. I got a cordless phone for my husband to listen to the conversation. He was so disgusted that he called the manager of the hospital and complained. My husband is very passive and NEVER initiates confrontation. This was that bad. The staff refused to speak to any of my current doctors to find out anything about my background with my bipolar disorder. All they ever did was assume that since I was there that I was such a danger and needed to continue to be locked up and ignored. The last (second) morning I was there, I attended a group session where a tech was hosting. The tech was explaining that the nurses and techs ignore us because we won't leave them alone, like this was a valid reason. I immediately spoke up. How the hell is this okay?? Upon admission, you are not given a tour, a schedule, or rules of the facility. You are brought there, strip searched and told nothing and when we inquired we got no answer or lies. It's sick. Why would someone who is feeling down about life want to be treated like this?! Several other patients experienced the same problem of trying to get the form (that is our legal right to get) when they asked. One man couldn't even bring his service animal into the hospital!!!!! He was Baker Acted, forced to that facility and they wouldn't even give him his LEGAL right to his service dog! I am so beyond disgusted with this facility and will never recommend it to anyone. There is no excuse for anyone to be treated the way all the patients there are. I will be sure to do everything I can to detour anyone away from there. read more

My stay at ubc was great the staff was very kind and caring it was a lot of people that they had to be there for but some how made it work they really have a lot on there plate every one not just us the patients every one asked the staff on the floor to do something i seen staff read books to people that couldn't read get yelled at Spit on and kept smiling I was on tp1/tp2 they was great people I could not believe how nice they treated me one staff took out his time to speak with me to see how I was doing right after he was done talking to me he ask someone else how you doing and had a 10 minute conversation with him to make sure he was feeling ok the groups was ok their was a couple us that like doing music so the staff turned on some beats and let us Rap and sing Music is very relaxing That was nice I enjoyed paying card with the techs watching comedy making jokes going out side took my mind off things I was going through thank you Mario,Richard,Christie,Monica,Maverick ,Lisa ,George ,Jackie ,Gary, Lorraine You Guys are wonderful people and thoughtful thank you guys so much I'm doing better Frank. read more

I had high hopes that University Behavioral Center would help my 20 yr old son after speaking to Marlene, the dir of admissions, but after waiting 1 hour, he saw a social worker? who determined that, since he was not a danger to himself or others, that there was nothing else to offer him and he was instructed to go home. What? No referral to a counselor, clinical social worker, psychologist, etc.? This is one of the biggest problems with the mental health industry. I guess the phrase "helping profession" is an oxymoron! read more

Dr. Aziz and his receptionist have no interest or care for the wellbeing of the patients. I went there to get help I think I needed. The doctor ignored all of the symptoms I gave him and wrote a prescription within 10 minutes. The medicine made me extremely nauseous and anxious. I told Dr. Aziz about my symptoms the next two times I met with him, and the only thing he suggested was for me to "take tums." I understand he has plenty of patients and it's difficult to personalize with every single one, but the lack of effort and concern is repulsive. I wouldn't suggest this location for a psychologist. read more

If I could give this place a 0 star I would, I am an ex-patient from this place and I've seen first hand how they treat the adults in the mental health part of the building. This place is like a prison and the staff is the officers. You're not allowed into your rooms unless you get a staff member to unlock it for you, and even then they are reluctant. They keep it freezing on the unit and we're only given a sheet and two really crappy blankets. I had asked a staff member to unlock my door so I can going to the bathroom and the staff member waited outside my door until I came out. You have zero privacy in this place. The staff is also very cold and unwelcoming. Also half they're staff is homophobic and transphobic, and they're basically just bullies. Do not send your kids or yourself to this place. I volunteered admission because I was struggling with an eating disorder and when I told my psychiatrist about it he asked" what you don't think you're pretty", he also put everyone in my unit on the same thing and when we came to him about our side effects he ignored them and told us to keep trying it for a few days. I was told I would be there for three days and they kept me for a week, just because they wanted the money they could gain for me.
