Chose the 'Buy Online, Pick Up in Store' option. Paid for it (via gift card). BOOM. I was notified via email when it was ready mere hours later. While I believe this location does indeed have curbside pickup, I popped on my mask and went to the first register. Told them my name and showed them my ID while having my email ready to show, just in case. In and out. No problems! I adore that you can see in-store availability when you're searching for books online. It makes life much easier. All in all, I had a solid experience. I'd prefer to buy local but what can you do when you have a gift card? Amiright? (ALSO, the book is a great read. Get it today!)

At the time, the nickname for this business was Iowa Book and Crook, but that was more a reflection of text book sticker shock that continues on most college campuses to this day. Iowa Book and Supply is centrally located on the corner of Clinton Street and Iowa Avenue and is across the street from the Pentacrest and Old Capital. I always stop in when I'm in town to look around. The store has actually changed quite a bit over the years, but has a similar student energy. And whether I'm browsing through the books, checking out the branded office supplies, or looking for the right Hawkeye memento, I always know where I am when I'm here.

I also sometimes take pause, realizing that these treasures used to belong to someone else, before they either voluntarily parted with them, or simply left their earthly positions behind. In some ways, Artifacts is the mother of antique stores, with several rooms filled with treasures, both small and large. It's right across the street from John's Market, and easily a world away. I found the selections to be fairly well organized and the store reasonably easy to navigate. It was also clear to me that the owners had a good eye and knew treasure from schlock. I found prices reflected well the value that they were probably worth. Best of all, wandering/exploring through Artifacts was a lot of fun. Besides "budget" consideration, the only other limiting factor for me is that I was going home to Northern Nevada in a few days, and my suitcase was only so big. I also knew darn well that places like this truly are like a box of chocolate, as you're never really sure what you'll find either now or later. And when I return to Iowa City in Fall 2022 and enter Artifacts, I'm sure it will be a whole new "Onion" experience. Gayle would say that we don't need any more stuff, while asking where we're going to put it. I'm not sure I understand her point. :)

I am a mom of a comic loving eight year old…read more One Saturday we decided to treat him to a comic of his choice, so of course we popped into Daydreams Comics. I was insanely surprised by their section. They have books for babies to adults that encompasses far more than Marvel or DC. There's something for everyone and I feel ashamed I assumed it wasn't! My son was set on Deadpool. (Because why not. He's not allowed to watch it, so why not assumed he could read it? SMH.) Rather than argue a losing battle with my little, we asked the employee at the register his thoughts on that. He very kindly said that, while it was up to his parents, all of the Deadpool literature in the store was a bit grown up and that he was a few years off. He offered some other options and our kiddo walked out with an X-Men X-Villan book that was perfect for his age/reading level. Shout out to that kind and knowledgable employee. Pricing is on point. Staff is wonderful. Selection, again, goes beyond a typical 'comic book' store. This gem has been around for over 30 years and it is no wonder. Open daily, pop in!
