UPMC Hanover is a very good hospital! My husband came into the ED by ambo with chest pains. I arrived five minutes later and was met in the lobby by an aide who told me my husband had a heart attack and to come to where he was. Staff were moving so fast around him and fifteen min. after his arrival he was getting a life saving stent. The after stay in ICU and the cardio plan after that were wonderful with kind and attentive staff. We consider UPMC HANOVER HOSPITAL our home hospital. We have lived in Pennsylvania 7 years and have only had good experiences with hip replacements, testing, heart attackS, and other issues. I trust this hospital. read more

This place is a joke!! Came in with chest pain and make me sit in waiting room for 20 mins. Tried putting an IV in 4 times!! I told them I need the IV team!! Then doctor gives me test results while scratching between her legs!!! 8:30pm they said I'm discharged with no update or what I need to do. Just handed me a paper saying I'm here with my appointments on it and now I'm waiting for family to pick me up! Horrible place!! read more

94 year old mom admitted for dehydration and bladder infection. Care was great, but Sandy in billing did not notify us that mom had to be discharged until a day AFTER the approved stay. No one told us. If I had known I could have made arraignments prior. I was notified at 8:30 in the morning that she had to leave the hospital or she would be considered abandoned. I was told to put her in a hotel? Now we are going to be stuck with a bill. read more

I came to the ER with chest pressure. The staff in the ER were very professional and congenial (which I appreciated). When I was moved to the PCU, every Nurse, Nurse Assistant, C-PAP person, Meal people and other Staff member that I dealt with was equally professional and congenial. My stay was comfortable and as enjoyable as a stay in the Hospital can be. There was even a Loveseat that converted into a bed (we didn't use it). And I had a Recliner and an unpluggable IV. read more

I came into the Er around 2:40am for an ingrown toenail. Generally I would've let it heal on its own or moved past the pain, but the pain got significantly worse and spread through my foot. I couldn't sleep through it either, so I decided to come in. I sat in a room until a little after 7am for a doctor to come in for 2 minutes and say he would call in an antibiotic. No relief or even tried to get the nail out. It took another hour just to be discharged. read more

How can you trust a hospital where the ER physician says you just have a sinus infection back in September 2019 because that's what "everyone" has, refuses to read the other emergency room reports from the Lebanon VA Hospital where you have been on two separate antibiotic regimens, keeps repeating that I should be at the VA when the VA triage nurse on the phone said I need to get to the emergency facility that I can get to within 20 minutes. To discharge you after only getting my blood pressure down to 159 over 120something with a pulse over 130, I make it as far as Holy Spirit in Camp Hill thankfully with the help of the person driving me still with me, they admit me within 15 minutes and say I'm not going anywhere because it is life threatening. I was there for five days before they would let me go, and I'm lucky I even made it to Camp Hill trying to get to the VA Hospital. I can see why the doctors name is not on the discharge papers from Hanover. At your hospital, I was left in the waiting room in a wheelchair in dire straits for hours while seemingly every kid in town hop skip and jump in and out like you had to see every kid in town with sniffles before you can see a person who is a veteran who could hardly breathe with blood pressure through the roof. And then, your ER physician has some kind of issue with American veterans, repeating some notion that I have the best healthcare, the VA, and that's where I should be, over and over. He apparently does not understand that nothing can be the best healthcare if it's not accessible! That attitude and ignorance after the VA triage nurse insisted I get to the "nearest facility" over the phone is not being there for you as you advertise and say in your barrage of emails. Especially since anyone else was saying that it was life-threatening. Thankfully, it took 5 days, but Holy Spirit in Camp Hill saved my life and got me back on my feet. The urgent care place that the VA sent me to before your Hospital said that there was no way they could do anything for me, and I needed to get to the hospital right away. I needed to call the VA back first, and they agreed to get to the nearest hospital. As for this UPMC Hospital, thanks for nothing and for basically sending me away to die. Craziness because of laziness. It's the season for sinus infections, so everyone has sinus infections, period. I think not. Wrong, and nearly "dead" wrong! read more

Went into labor and had my son feb 10 and have nothing but good things to say. The team of nurses and midwife Emily were amazing. So supportive and comforting thru the 5 hours of labor and 1 hour of pushing. Wish I remembered the name of the nurses because they deserve to be acknowledged. They were truly angels thru out everything. I ended up having to stay 3 days which stressed me out but the team of nurses that helped me during my stay in maternity were incredible- again I can't remember their names tho. The pediatrician dr Gonzalez was fantastic! Even took the first family picture for my husband newborn and myself minutes after he was born. Overall had a great experience here and would encourage others to birth there. read more

On 8/4/2021 I went to the emergency room at UPMC Hanover at about 2am with severe mouth pain from an infected tooth and a small abscess. I told both the receptionist and the physician that I had an appointment to see the dentist and that I was ONLY seeking something stronger than Anbesol for pain relief so I could sleep for a few hours as I hadn't slept in two days. The receptionist admitted me fully aware that I was only there seeking pain relief. When the physician looked at my mouth for all of 5 seconds he said "There's nothing I can do for you. You need to see a dentist.", with an attitude like I was bothering him. So then he has his assistant administer exactly one Amoxicillin capsule with no further prescription. I assume he works on commission and did this to claim he "treated" me. No doctor anywhere prescribes one Amoxicillin capsule as a course of treatment for any condition. Then his assistant comes by with a credit card machine and asks if I'd like to prepay $100 towards my deductible for a small discount. They spent far more time on getting money from me than any "treatment" or evaluation. A week later my insurance company receives a bill for $890.35 and I receive a bill for $227, on top of the $100 I already paid in the ER. On top of that, the bill shows $0 paid by me and no adjustments. A few weeks later and I received yet another bill. This one is "only" $661.21, showing a total charge of $1,117.35. My health insurance company denied the claim of course stating that they don't cover dental. So is UPMC is claiming they provided a dental service or a medical service? Whatever they are providing seems to have earned them a 1.9 star rating from patients. I've received exactly three bills and immediately returned the first two in their envelope with their billing statement and a letter of complaint outlining the above. The second I even wrote on the back of the envelope in bold marker "Second Request". When I received the third bill I called UPMC at 2:49 PM on November 12th. The representative claimed they never received them. When I asked if I could file a complaint the representative asked what it was about, so I explained. After that she became defensive, stating "I absolutely know our doctors know what they are doing." I then requested the address to send a complaint, and sent it out the same day to UPMC Central PA dept 1707 PO Box 2353 Harrisburg, PA 17105. On Friday November 18th a customer service representative named Kathy left a voicemail stating that she had received the complaint, had pulled the account from collections and would get back to me when a decision had been made. On November 29th I called her back at 717-230-3743 and left a voice message. On November 30th she returned my call stating that UPMC decided that the charge was legitimate and it would go back into collections. In closing I informed her that I would be making this complaint to The State. To be frank, the $100 I already paid for "there's nothing I can do for you" was $100 too much. I have no idea how their chargemaster is allowed to operate so haphazardly. I had an oral surgeon provide an actual service since I was at UPMC, and for less than one third of what UPMC demanded for 5 seconds of nothing. If they can't provide the service that is requested (dental pain relief in my case) then they shouldn't be admitting those people. I have retained all bills, phone logs, voice messages and a copy of the original complaint letters. UPMC decided to contact me regarding this complaint 8 MONTHS LATER and said they would investigate themselves. They found themselves not guilty. I just got back from a visit to this hospitals ER totally frustrated. Sept 8th, 2020. I read the review from Jonathan H and was blown away how his story and mine were virtually the same I use Wellspan and on Friday Sept 4th I had bloodwork done a lot of pain and they found I had a UTI and gave me medication. The pain increased and on Sept 7th I got notified that I had E-coli at the highest level of over 100,000CFU/ml. I called my Wellspan office on Sept 8th as the pain was becoming unbearable. I was told they were closing but made an appointment for me the next day to get a shot. They said to go to the hospital if it seems to be getting worse to get it done. I went to this Hanover hospital because it is the closest to me not knowing it was not affiliated with Wellspan. I explained the situation and what my bloodwork showed just a day ago. The ER doctor ordered more bloodwork and it came back that I had a UTI which I obviously already knew. I asked what the bloodwork showed as far as the E-coli and I was told they just did the basic bloodwork and did not test for that. I had pictures of the Wellspan test results showing the high level of E-coli and told them I was concerned what the level was at this point. They refused to even look at the test results and gave me some pills for bladder pain and sent me on my way. I believe they shut down any conversation after I mentioned I use Wellspan and they were happy to get me out of there and let me deal with another night of pain before I could see my doctor tomorrow. I always thought if you needed help with a medical emergency or just need reassurance that you are not in an emergency situation that you can go to any hospital for help. Obviously that is not the case when you are not a regular patient and medical tests from a different hospital or practice cannot be taken into account. A good lesson for ER doctors could learn is that sometimes patients DO KNOW what is wrong, with documented proof, and they would be wise to listen for the safety of their patients. read more

If you want me to be completely honest... after my last experience with this hospital I don't think i'd even take my cat here (I know; take a joke) & if you live in the area please take an extra 30 minute drive to York hospital for actual professional and good care. They have no bedside manner what so ever. Half of the time they can't even give you the answers you need or the care you deserve. This is no joke you could die messing around with this hospital. I would share personal experience but it's so painful. all I can say is DR. DENNY needs to go get himself a heart & a degree in human compassion. Also he's very arrogant for someone who barely knows what they're talking about. Many people will read this review and know just how terrible this place was for them or their loved ones as well. They are one of the worst graded/rated hospitals for a reason! just whatever you do, don't go there. read more

Generally had good experiences here. The only thing that really upsets me and this is Health care wide is lack of compassion from the er doctors. If it is close to shift change meaning within an hour and a half of when you get taken back to a room you can forget about being seen until after shift changes. It's common practice in the industry. I guess like any other job you become numb and it's just a job. I've spoken to several doctors outside of their work place and the thing that draws them to the er is having regular set hours, not being on call, not having to followup, etc.. for most they are there to do their 8 and go home. One thing I will add is that in any other industry if we coasted the last hour and a half of our shifts we would be fired. read more

My mom went there. They sent here home with a pulminary embolism. Her heart was only working at 69%. What kind of place would do that. I finally took her to a better facility that actually did something and kept her for more observations and tests. She could have died. 50,000-200,000 people die each year from pulmonary embolisms. Crushed leg, work related injury. I had to wait in the waiting room for 6 hours before i was taken back and seen by a dr. People with colds came in after me were seen and left before i was even asked if there was anything i needed for pain like ice or what have you. If it wasn't for the ER staff I would have put this rating at a 1. ER was amazing, compassionate and worked with family members. Once moved to ICU, I have nothing good to say. Being incubated and watching my family member gagging and needed auctioning. I timed the staff multiple times. It was an average of 7-8 minutes before they responded. This is an airways issue and it I wasn't cleaning her mouth out to help this amount of time without air could have been deadly. Then because the nurse was nasty to everyone, my sister became nasty. The answer for this hospital is to say no visitors and no calls. How about teach your staff how to deal with critical patients. Nasty, showing no compassion and treating family badly helps no one. Kim the nurse obviously had no experience dealing with difficult patients and made the situation worse. She needs to seek help herself for her control issues. I would never let another family member be admitted to this hospital and feel bad for anyone who has a loved one in this hospital with this nurse caring for them!! read more

One star is an over statement. I had to wait 2 hours in an empty waiting room. When I was finally taken back to see a doctor I had to wait another hour in a half to even see a doctor. They put an IV in me and took my blood. An our later they came back and said they lost my blood! How do you lose someone's blood!? So they took some more blood. Two hours later they came back and said they needed to do some X-rays. They forgot about me and I had to ask them why it was taking so long to look at my X-rays. Finally I was done and they gave me my prescription and told me I had to go pick it up. I called my pharmacy and they said they didn't have anything. So I called the hospital and they told me I had to physically take the prescription there. Why didn't they tell me that yesterday?! All the nurses there had an attitude the whole time I was there. NEVER GO TO HANOVER HOSPITAL! If you can make it to Gettysburg GO TO GETTYSBURG. read more

i have to agree with the comment from ave. I went to the ER 3 times this year for being super sick on top my asthma and each time they sent me home with no treatment at all and I ended up getting way worse. I went in on july 15th and was triaged right away and told them how bad I was and was taken for an xray then was told I had to wait in waiting area with my gown on from the xray. I sat in the waiting area for 3 hours like that, was not told anything other then we r busy and when I went there I was only one there and then 3 people got taken back before me(2 were kids) they never told me anything at all so I was sitting there hungry afraid to eat so I ate something light was still so hungry I almost got sick. I finally got taken back to a room where I waited another 20 minutes or so to see the doctor. the doctor came in said I sounded clear and sent me home with no treatment at all. the whole time I was in the ER I was coughing really bad as my meds were wearing off and no one seemed to care. this Er department thinks they know better then the patient and the patients doctor who happens to send them there. I would not recommend this hospital to anyone nor do I really want to go there every again. do not waste your time going to this ER your time is not worth it read more

I had 2 large abscess's in my upper jaw causing much pain. The dentist, Dr. Cole took x-rays and explained the nature of the pain. He gave me amoxicillin and explained that I would be out of pain in one to two days. I asked for pains meds just in case, but he declined. In the mean time I left this quack and made a appointment with an Oral surgeon who looked at my mouth and gave me stronger anti biotic. I had an appointment for the dental surgery on Friday, however I had so much pain on Wednesday that it brought tears to my eyes. I checked into Hanover Hospital emergency room with not only extreme mouth and ear pain but this effected my angina greatly since I have multiple heart conditions too. They never gave me pain medication that would even dull the pain! I was so angry from their lack of compassion. I explained that I still have extreme pain, and they did nothing to elevate the medication. I ended up driving myself home about to have a accident from the pain distracting me from my driving!! The excuse I was given is we have had a lot of over doses tonight so we are not quick to give stronger medications. That is complete garbage! Never again will I set foot in Hanover emergency room if I have anything to say about it. They were barbaric. Hospital's in Maryland don't play games like these dopes did to me. read more
