Dr. Sun is my spine surgeon. He is very nice and listens. I told him about my neck. I've been trying to get a doctor to do an MRI of my cervical spine for 10 YEARS! Had 3 of my lumbar. I asked Dr. Sun. Right away, he agreed. He discovered that I had 4 disks that were pinching my spinal cord and I was at high risk for paralysis! He did my neck fusion surgery. I feel great! He's been seeing me for my back, as well. I trust him with my life. He has hands of gold. He is so kind and down to earth. I have such admiration and respect for him. 1 of the best doctors I've had! I came here in October of 2025 after I badly injured my left thumb that resulted in me breaking the tip of my left thumb. Ouch. I came here at the recommendation of WellNow Urgent Care. I called to set up a time to come in. They told me they couldn't see me in the afternoon. I don't know if they couldn't see me in the afternoon, or just wouldn't. I went in the morning after my injury occurred. I saw Dr. Vrendenburgh. He talked kind of quickly. I was glad I had my Mom with me. I went back a month and a half later. I waited a long time. I was annoyed. Luckily, my injury had healed and I don't need any further care. The exam room I was in was when I went in for my recheck was hot, and I thought I was going to have a hot flash. I hope I never need another orthopedist. If I do, I don't know if I'll use this place again. read more

Dr. setter and Dr. tallarico and their staff there are amazing. it is Mathew Burnett PA there that is very dismissive and does not care about you or your concerns with your body. he is rude, angry and does not care how he speaks to you. He cares more about protecting your insurance company then about you. actually put it in notes that my pain does not match my MRI which greatly affects if my no fault will continue paying for my medical care. instead of "let's find out what is causing this pain" he is a terrible attendant and simply does not care about you. his notes are not accurate and he makes mistakes in them when they are very important to your care to be accurate. I am in pain and I am being treated dismissive when something is going on causing this pain and what if this time going by makes it worse, makes it permanent. read more

I had seen Dr Scuderi back in 2021 for a dislocated knee. He was extremely rude and assuming that it deterred me from getting a needed surgery. I went back today for the same injury and he has not changed...in fact he is worse. His attitude and the way he spoke to me was completely inappropriate and demeaning. This man clearly has anger issues and should not be trusted with caring for anyone. Needless to say I got release forms so I never have to come back there. So I'm torn because this is a review of the practice versus individual providers. Overall, I'd give the whole facility and experience an average of 2-3 stars. Here's my breakdown: I see Dr. VanValkenburg for my foot. He is awesome! He runs timely and I never feel rushed when I see him. His bedside manner is great. He also takes time to answer questions and explain things in detail. I can't say enough about him. He would get 5 stars. I saw Dr. Damron (knee). He runs so far behind. This was actually stated by the front desk staff when I went in once. The last time when I went for Dr V, I saw a note on the receptionists desk that Damron was 1 1/2 hours behind already. That was at 9:40am! It may just be his personality but I feel he lacked any bedside manner. He said very little and spent very little time with me. I also saw a PA- J. Ireland (spine). She also ran late but not as bad as Damron. No apology (neither did Damron) for making me wait. She did warm up a bit when talking with her in the appt but definitely no warm and fuzzy when meeting with her either. With Damron and Ireland, I just had the feeling that you're wasting their time. I get it is their job and maybe they're burned out and just going through the motions. This is me trying to determine why the experience is as it is with them. I haven't treated with NP (or PA) Carmelita Woods (hand/arm) but my husband has. He really likes Dr Setter, who she works under but the experiences with her have left much to be desired. Last time she asked him who suggested something to him in respect to his injury and it was her at his previous visit! read more

I wanted to add this codicil to my review from a couple of years ago. The pain from a serious fall that this provider dismissed for literally months as arthritis was anything but; when I finally able to get an MRI after weeks and weeks of them denying it, it showed significant damage to my entire shoulder all the way to my scapula, which explains the pain and fact that my arm was essentially useless since my fall. I'd pretty much torn everything you can tear. It took 2 surgeries to correct it to the point that I was able to use my arm at all, and I'm left with nerve damage. I don't understand a practice that doesn't advocate for the patient but instead seems to be on the side of the workers comp insurance company. If you have great insurance and deep pockets, I suspect you might have a different experience. read more

She had a hip replacement, and I had bunion repair and pinning done on my right foot here too. We've gotten the opportunity to see how everything works and the commitment to quality first hand. Had surgery a year ago - Dr Sutter. He must have had plans because he never came out to talk to me or my wife about the surgery or follow up. Never saw him. A year later it appears there is a foreign object under the skin in my elbow along with significant pain. Went back to Upstate Orthopedics, told the reception staff when she asked this is NOT a comp case. waiting room packed full. Saw a PA who suggested an MRI. Two weeks later called back about the MRI and was told they were waiting for insurance approval for the MRI because this was a comp case. Told them AGAIN this is not a comp case. Waited another week, got the MRI and then no word from this office. Called back and staff said the object didn't show up in the MRI, they would set up a surgical procedure to remove the item. Was asked AGAIN if this was a comp case. Makes me wonder if they have an agreement with comp?? Told her AGAIN NO, it's not comp. That was 3 weeks ago - haven't heard a thing. My suggestion before you consider this "big box" ortho outfit is to go elsewhere. Their focus is quantity not quality. This place is horrible. I wish I could give this place a negative 10 stars. NEW REVIEW - NEGATIVE 10 STARS! The first review was my husbands surgery with Dr Setter. My recent experience was with Dr. Scuderi. On a Friday I fell on some stairs and twisted my foot pretty badly, went to Well Now the next morning, x-rays showed a minor fracture on the top of my foot. Told to follow up with Upstate Ortho on Monday. They wrapped it up pretty good and told me not to put any weight on. I'm assigned to Dr. Scuderi at Upstate Ortho, who whisks into the room, introduces himself as if he's in a hurry. I tell him I took a fall, had an X-ray and have a fracture. He's already reviewing my disc in his laptop so he's not even looking at me while I'm talking. Then, in a heightened, somewhat exasperated voice says, "fracture?? I don't see any fracture! Who said it was fractured?!" I asked my husband to hand him the written report, which he scans and looks again at the disc and points and says, "Oh THIS?!" I don't even know what that is! I don't know if that's an old injury or a new one! That's no fracture, go ahead and walk on it. Gave me a cursory 30 second exam and shooed me out the room. I'm pretty active - I walk 1.5-2 miles a few days a week and sometimes the injury still bothers me. That said Upstate Ortho is probably only for athletic and serious injuries - because those injuries guarantee a financial benefit. This type of large organization is not for regular folks with minor injuries. The staff was kind and courteous but this is the second dr I've had the displeasure of meeting here. The worst facility i've been to so far. I've had two visits and both times i've been waiting over an hours before the doctor seen me. Once I seen the doctor i had to wait an additional hour in a room by myself until he gave me his opinion. This place is severely under staffed and i can't believe this place is making millions off their patients healthcare. The nurse came out and said the doctor is an hour and 45 mins behind schedule...??!! I took me over an hour to drive there from where i live so expect to be there for about 3-4 hours for anything. It's amazing how you have no choices in some of these health care facilities. And also if you're late you get penalized. Smh. read more

Dr Emil Azer was the worst doctor I've ever been to; rude, non caring, short with me. Showed no concern of why I was there nor offered any input. Upon examining me he wrenched my knee sideways causing severe pain which I'm living with now. When complaining to their patient relation instead of investigating this doctor they shielded him with their insurance's lawyers. I've waited over a total of 7 hours for the past 3 visits. They tell you it's a little bit of wait but be prepared to wait hours upon hours to get called in where you have to wait more hours upon hours. Today they forgot I was there! If you have to go here then make sure you pack many things to do and a cellphone charger. If they tell you you have to stay regardless of the 2 hour wait, just leave and come back after 3 hours. read more

If you are looking to get help....go anywhere else. Needed to get a second opinion on a back injury, they gave me a back belt and assigned me to go to PT for two months. I can barley walk around, taking baby steps, and am in need of a temporary parking pass but nurse practitioner Matthew Aloi thinks it is "inappropriate" since I am not in need of a cane of wheelchair. I tried to call back and I didn't realize that Jessica who answers the phone must also be a doctor because she has all the answers! I tried to mention the back belt that they gave me but she said it's not a brace? Last I knew anything that gives support like that to the body is a brace but I'm not the receptionist with a doctorate degree. As I was trying to ask my questions Jessica was constantly talking over me, being the most unhelpful and rudest she could possibly be. When I tried to explain how I could not walk without assistance, that I have been wheeled around in a chair from bed to bathroom, she then decided to act like I was dumb and say "that's not a wheelchair." I think I know what a wheelchair is Jessica, just because I am not a receptionist with a doctorate degree doesn't mean I am confusing a computer chair for a wheelchair. As I was trying to explain that for the temporary parking pass the examples of an assisting device include but aren't limited to: a brace, cane, crutch, prosthetic device, another person, wheelchair, or walker. I guess Jessica really just likes being unhelpful because she just wanted to keep talking about how I wasn't using any of those, even though I have the brace and explained how I need help simply getting from bed to the bathroom and I have been trying to get a crutch. The entire time she is continuing to talk over me and telling me I can go to my primary care physician. Well Doctor/receptionist Jessica, I will be going to my primary care physician and I suggest everyone else do the same and DON'T go to upstate orthopedics. read more

If I can give a comment without a star I would. I've been a patient here since last year and nothing has change. I drive more than an hour just to see a specialist. I arrive one hour early plus one and a half hour more to wait! The nurse of the doctor is not even checking on me if I am ok in the room not even informing what time do I need to wait. i just ask her and she's very rude and didn't even answer my question. Ugh! They are probably doing a good job for their patients, however, the business reduction unit, ie, the clerks who answer the phone, continuously put you on hold, tell you to go find out if your insurance pays for the procedure (their job is to verify insurance) and basically tell you without saying so, "We're too busy to talk to you" read more

I absolutely love Upstate Orthopedics! I fractured 3 bones in my ankle and 2 slid out of place. As you can expect from any athlete who loves their sport and takes it very seriously, I was devastated and nervous that I would never be the same. Today marks about 5 months since the incident! I went to OrthoNow and received excellent care -- just as I did six years ago when I injured my ankle. I have found the staff to be caring and responsive. Yes, there is waiting, and while I haven't experienced it myself, I can imagine there might be administrative challenges simply due to the size and scope of the practice. Overall, however, I have been treated with care and attention every time I have been there and I will continue to recommend them. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. My first appointment, I waited 2.5 to 3 hours before I went to the receptionist and complained. She was able to fit me in with the PA instead of the doctor I was suppose to see. She was more interested in giving me medications for the hell of it, rather than double checking to see if the medication she prescribed would have a reaction with the medication I am already on. My pharmacist even stated she did not know why the PA prescribed me the medication she did. Today's appointment is what set me off the most. I went in for an MRI. The people in the MRI department are wonderful. I was in and out. Now I'm waiting in the waiting room for the PA to read me my MRI. Hour goes by...nothing. Then one of the nurses came out and said she was running an hour behind. Last time I heard that was my first appointment and I was waiting 3 hours. I left. I couldn't believe the service. you would think they would make patients who have appointments a priority, right? WRONG. They choose walk-ins over patients who have scheduled appointments in advance. If you can't handle walk-ins and scheduled appointments, how about you plan accordingly. If you know you are going to have walk-ins, why overbook? They better transfer my MRI to my regular doctor or my new specialist because I will NEVER go back. read more

I have to say I was not very impressed with this facility. I fell and broke my left humerus bone ice skating on March 2, 2019. After researching top orthopedic shoulder specialists in the area we chose Dr. Setter. On Monday, March 4th Early morning we called Upstate Orthopedics and made an appointment with Dr. Setter or so we thought. Upon arriving we were told that Dr Setter is not in on Monday's but we would be seeing Dr Damron and oh by the way he is 2 hours behind schedule. Bear in mind I am in excruciating pain. So we waited. Upon being called into the office we saw a resident. They did not have to take an X-ray as they were able to use the one that was taken from Urgent Care on Saturday. The resident looked at the X-ray and we were told the break was borderline for surgery so come back in 2 weeks and they would reassess me. He then said I want to have Dr Damron look at the X-ray to be sure he was in agreement. Dr Damron came in looked at the X-ray said yes I agree come back in 2 weeks and that was it. Dr. Damron had no care or compassion for how I felt. Again bear in mind I am in excruciating pain on pain medication. In disbelief I went home. I was not able to function at all. Since I am left handed I was very concerned of a displaced bone healing on its own so I went to seek a second opinion in Cortland with Dr. Marson. He immediately looked at the x ray and his exact words were, you know this needs to be fixed right? This was on Thursday, March, 7; he recommended and made my appointment with Dr. Yaseen in Ithaca on Friday as Dr Marson no longer performed surgery. I had surgery with two screws put in on Monday, March 11, 9 days after the accident. Dr Marson and Dr Yaseen were both great and I highly recommend Dr Yaseen. She was very caring and concerned about how I felt and I was treated with the utmost's respect. Now I am in receipt of a bill from Upstate orthopedics for treatment of a fracture, $785.00, treatment was to look at a provided x ray and come back in two weeks to be reassessed. The is Upstates practice with Billing. Did they tell me that at my visit? No they did not. What I received and am willing to pay for was an office visit. There was absolutely no treatment. Initially I went against what I was told about this office and decided to take my daughter there. Most of the doctors are fine. However, with every visit it was AT LEAST a 45 minute wait to be called back. I was willing to overlook this. What finally broke the camels back was when I wanted to get a second opinion I had a horrible time trying to get them to release my daughters medical records. They claim they were released and mailed at the beginning of the month yet no one at the others doctor's office has received them and after almost a month no one can tell me were they are. Then I said I will just pick up the report AND images imagine my surprise when I picked up ONLY the report. I had to go to each place she has images done and pick them up myself. Unacceptable! If they had told me this a month ago it wouldn't have been a problem but I was never informed of this!! DON'T HERE UNLESS YOU MIND WAITING FOREVER, THEM LOSING YOUR RECORDS AND DISORGANIZATION!!!!! read more

The medical staff was fine; they did their job as expected. I went in for back pain and they conducted the required tests to find out what was going on. However, the support staff of the office I was seen by seem to be quite lacking. Since this was an injury that had me out of work for quite some time, I needed to get temporary disability paperwork filled out. Because of how the medical world works, apparently this was the only place I could get it filled out, and I was charged $5 to get this done. Normally this wouldn't be too much of an issue, but when you're running out of money, $5 is a big deal when you have no other way of getting it filled out and no income. On top of that, I was informed that it would take up to 10 business days to fill out the half sheet of paper I needed them to fill out. Finally, when they did fill it out, I asked them to mail it in my provided envelope back to my HR department so they could then get the case reviewed. Only problem was that Upstate Ortho decided to mail it to me instead, without the envelope, and they mailed me copies of the paperwork. When I decided to call to ask for the originals at 2:50PM on a Friday, the person who handles disability paperwork left for the day, and now I have to wait until Monday. I can only imagine what sort of runaround I'll be given as far as getting the original paperwork. So something that should have "only" taken up to 10 business days is now taking much longer than that. As an update; I received a call back from them explaining that they did in fact mail it outto my HR department, however, I still stand by my review as the disorganization of the support staff is more than is acceptable. read more

My 3 yr old was going to have a trigger thumb surgery. Dr. Brian Harvey was the MD working with us. He is very dismissive and rude...an opinion shared by my husband, me, and my mother in law who use to work for him. For ONE example I asked him if his nurse would be able to give me some suggestions after surgery for what's worked best on keeping the bandages dry, since it is Halloween weekend. His response: "That's for you as a parent to figure out. And your job to keep him out of risky situations." I politely said " well seeing how you do this everyday I figured you may have known some tips over the years that seemed to work best for the kids and families. He had the same rude dismissive impatient demeanor on the consultation visit. After seeing him that morning, Dr. Elizabeth Demers the anesthesiologist came in. Seemed nice. Then asks if he's been sick. I told her what I told the pre registration woman 2 days before this surgery " He had a cold 2-3 wks ago, he still has a runny nose it gets all over his face kind of runny nose, he has a congested cough first thing in the morning but fades by mid morning at latest." The anesthesiologist informs me that putting a child under with congestion is putting him at risk in regards to respiratory interference. She says "I WILL LEAVE IT UP TO YOU TO MAKE THE CALL OF WHETHER THIS IS NORMAL FOR HIM AND TO CONTINUE" Um no, I will not be responsible for telling an MD whether or not my childs physically fit for anesthesia. I can tell you that he is typically a heavy breather, but I'm not going to say that the amount of mucus present is constricting to, and a possible implication to anesthesia. THATS YOUR JOB. I have no training, or knowledge of what's acceptable in this situation. Further more, I told the pre reg. nurse exactly what I am telling this anesthesiologist, the only thing she wrote was - sick 2-3 wks ago. I repeated told Dr. Elizabeth Demers, anesthesiologist that I was not frustrated with her, but with this situation, that I know she did not create this but that this situation is completely uncalled for. I said as a mother you understand where I am coming from right? Dr. Elizabeth was visually annoyed by our response to the point where my husband began getting annoyed, by her response. In the end Dr. Elizabeth Demers finally assessed him herself and said that he did sound too congested. So ok, I understand the concept of things come up unexpectedly and surgery gets cancelled and its for our best interests. But in my opinion, and I said this to Dr. Demers is "I should of had a pre-operatory appointment with my pediatrician who then said whether or not my child was suitable for surgery the NEXT DAY. The job shouldn't not be up to me to determine, and I should not have to be orchestrating a surgery day that can be dismissed so easily, as if doing this was a mere flu shot appt. Which seeing how they called me 3 times to confirm- it is obviously very important for them to keep a schedule and so forth. I in no way want to jeopardize my child's safety, hence me not following through. BUT this was a completely avoidable situation. Further more I drove an hour to get there by 630, waited an hour to be seen (when I was told that they do the youngest children first thing in the morning because they know how hard they can be to work with... and it was a first come first serve situation in the waiting room). Lastly when I called to collect the names of the people that I interacted with, the phone personal that I asked "what the anesthesiologists name on duty this morning was", was reluctant to tell me, and said " I am not sure" I had to say "can you ask someone...." then she was all umm let me see... I will drive to Rochester or buffalo before I line the pockets of these "professionals" or this establishment again! Which as you can see their rating is a one and a half star I'm not alone in this conclusion. read more

I am a new patient, and so far I am not impressed. I went to the after hours care on a Friday night. Arrived before they started seeing patients as it is first come first serve, and was able to get right in, However the PA who saw me was not receptive to my pain at all, she made me seem like I was wasting her time. She told me that my PT was wrong about my x-rays and that "physical therapists are not trained to read x-rays." Apparently this PA needs to learn to read x-rays too, as when I saw another PA for my follow up (a full 10 days later, as the first PA didn't take me seriously), the second PA told me the exact opposite results of my x-ray! Now I am waiting for an MRI which I was told will take 7-10 business days because they "only have one person that schedules." So after going to emergency after hours care, I have been seen by two PA's for a total of 10 minutes between them, both telling me complete opposite reasons for my pain and am on a waiting list for an MRI. It has been 19 days since my visit to after hours care and I am still in pain, with no solution in sight. My advice, don't go to Upstate After Hours Care, go straight to an emergency room. read more
