    12 Layer Chocolate Cake

Rocked up to the bar while stopping through town. The lovely bartender was sweet and very attentive, even during a rush and serving a large party. You can tell that locals enjoy their time here and are welcomed by name by serving staff. Fresh offerings and well cooked fare, my steak was cooked to perfection at Medium Rare and was a great serving size for the price! The side of loaded mashed potatoes tasted great, but was 70% melted cheese. Ended my time by enjoying a few bites of this deliciously decadent 12 Layer Chocolate Cake, as recommended by my server. I couldn't leave a single bite behind and brought the left overs with me on my travels!

Very neat place with a 50 year history! GREAT SERVICE!!! My goodness, we couldn't have been better taken care of! Food was really good, but pricey. Highly recommend!

Medium rare ribeye with a loaded baked potato! Yum

I always stop in on my way back to Coldwater and I enjoy a delicious charbroiled ribeye and some appetizers. I enjoy sitting at the bar and watching some sports on the old school TVs and listening to some easy listening 80's rock. The service is always very good and fast! They are very friendly local people and the portions of food are HUGE! Recommend the cheese sticks (enough for 2-3 people) and ribeyes with baked potato!

Another road trip through Kansas and didn't realize that I had been here back in September. As I am looking though Yelp trying to find a place for lunch I tell my traveling partner about this place. We pull up and I said to him I think we've been here before. We walk in the door and I said yes and we sat right over there. We sat down and looked through the menu and I couldn't decide. I finally decide to chose the lunch special. 2 piece Chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn! It was a great choice. The server was quite pleasant with a good sense of humor. The inside was nicely decorated and made for a nice dining experience

Excellent spot for steak, and great service. The twice baked potato was enough for three people! Highly recommended

Had a nice dinner at the bar here on my way out west. It's a nice restaurant and friendly staff. The nacho sancho was a hefty portion and tasted great. Lots of good options on the menu and I look forward to visiting again

What a wonderful recommendation we received to eat here! A perfect end to a long day on the road! First, when you walk in you are greeted and seated. Second, it has a super nice vibe! Not too hip for the locals but just hip enough for an out of towner to know they have it going on! Third, the menu!!!! Wow!!! Something for everyone and very affordable! And the specials of the day! Why cook at home! Fourth, we are Keto. I asked for a lettuce wrapped burger and while this was obviously something that has never been asked of here they nailed it!!! Fifth, the burger was a 1/2 pound hand smashed burger! Meat was some of the best I have had! Two pieces of bacon and a slice of ham! I was in heaven! My husband had two patties! Couldn't finish them! Sixth, the staff was attentive and nice. Place super clean! The only thing I thought was it seemed pretty chilly inside for dinner. The heat needed to be turned up a bit! Otherwise perfect!!!

They're open from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, and until 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Saturday. They're closed on Sundays. After a long day on the road traveling from Las Cruces, New Mexico, to Salina, Kansas, we arrived around 6:00 p.m. on a Monday evening. We were more than ready for a break. We had found Carolyn's Essenhaus on Yelp, and from the photos and reviews, it looked like just the kind of place we were hoping to find. Inside, the restaurant was much larger than we expected. The dining room was filled with local artwork, charming Kansas memorabilia, comfortable tables and booths, and a classic salad bar prominently displayed in the center. Table service was friendly, warm, and welcoming--like enjoying dinner in your grandmother's kitchen. My wife ordered the chopped steak topped with cheese and grilled onions, served with green beans and sweet potato fries. I chose one of the local favorites, essentially a hearty patty melt featuring a grilled burger, grilled onions, and a thick slice of grilled ham. Both entrées were excellent, but the real star of the meal was the salad bar--especially if you appreciate an old-fashioned, homemade selection. It instantly reminded me of family potlucks with all my aunts and uncles. There was macaroni salad, cottage cheese, potato salad, broccoli raisin salad, a sweet and creamy chopped cucumber salad, and plenty of other homemade favorites. It was so good that I went back for a second small plate and happily told our server to charge me for the extra trip. To finish the meal, we couldn't resist taking two slices of their homemade coconut cream pie to go. It was every bit as delicious as the rest of the meal. Before heading out, we picked up a few of their homemade cookies from the front counter, paid what we thought was a very reasonable bill, and continued our journey with full stomachs and smiles. If your travels ever take you near Arlington, Kansas, do yourself a favor and make time for Carolyn's Essenhaus. It's the kind of place that reminds you why small-town restaurants are often the most memorable stops on any road trip.

I am not a breakfast person, so when I finally had a chance to try the lunch buffet, I took it. What I expected: A tiny, crowded place with average food. Upon entering, I was surprised that the restaurant was much larger than I assumed. The employees and locals were all very friendly. While some of the food was average for a buffet, the majority of it that I tried was well above average. The standouts for me were the delicious fried chicken, rolls, and chicken pot pie. I appreciated having the choice of brown or cream gravy for the mashed potatoes. The salad bar was also pretty good, so I was pleasantly surprised. I will definitely return!
