This was my first experience with Axe Throwing. Overall it was great for a first experience, but I don't know if I'll be back soon. I went for a company event with about a dozen of us. We have two coaches run us through a tutorial, followed by a tournament. It was very clear that some people had a knack for it. Others, like me, didn't get the axe to stick into the board. If getting the axe to fly back at your feet was a good thing, I was a pro a that. I didn't get great coaching on how to do better so it was frustrating for me. Out of the entire 2 hours I only got the axe to stick in the wall maybe 5 times out of 100. Then there's a points system to decide winners once the axe sticks in the wall. Overall, my company had a great time with the axes and the inside bar was a nice surprise. In my opinion, it is a very expensive activity. The cost and coaching are why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I recommend going in a larger group (6+) to split the cost. read more

So many questions... When did Durham become the capital of hipsterhood? Why is sinking an axe in wood so rewarding? How much money is this place raking in?! Okay I'm cheap but it has to be crazy inexpensive to maintain this no frills old warehouse with metal fencing, wood, and $20-30 axes. So $22 a person for an hour seems crayyyy. I love my friend whose birthday it was but had I known it'd be that expensive I would have probably decided to Netflix and chill. We did have fun, just would have been better if we didn't spend so much on the evening. One of the friends we went with is on a league. Interesting hobby but maybe it's more cost effective? Nice people, good coaches, just too hipster for my typical scene. read more

Had a great time here last night. Before yesterday, I didn't even know axe throwing was a thing. A big group of us friends visiting from out of town went out in search of fun and found this place. We had to wait a bit for our turn with the coach but they have a bar and we ran down the street for pizza which Urban Axes let us bring in to eat. The highlight was our coach, Melody (Melanie?). They were clear in their instruction, focusing on safety, and had a great sense of humor. They also gave us great tips along the way to help us improve. We got some practice swings in, then the competition was on! I'd go here again in a heartbeat! read more

I was excited to come back after I heard they opened up since COVID hit, and it did not disappoint! Doors at the front were left open to freely circulate air, all staff wore masks at all times, hand sanitizers were readily available, and our group was placed more than six feet apart from the other guests. I felt completely safe. We had Bradley as our instructor and guide and he was PHENOMENAL - very personable, patient, and knowledgeable. My parents were newcomers to axe throwing and my sibling has autism and he went to great lengths to make sure everyone in my family had the proper technique and was having fun at the same time, even if it involved repeating himself over and over again. Bradley is a true gem and I'm so glad to have this business back up and running during times like these. We will be back! read more

Didn't know what to expect with an Axe throwing bar but wanted to check out Urban Axes for some time. Let me tell you it was the funnest night I have had for in a while. It's a cool location and a great set up. You are assigned a coach (Zoey was great to tell you the rules and to teach you how to throw the axe. It was much harder than I thought but I finally got it. After we all got a few times to try we ended up playing King of the Hill which me being the competitive person I am loved that the best. The whole staff were great and super helpful. After another date night activity was cancelled, our crew was scrambling for another fun and unique Friday night outing. I had seen a few friends post about Urban Axes and with my naive crew in tow, we decided to give it a try. Thankfully, when we went to book it on the Wednesday prior, there was still availability for the Friday evening time slot. Booking: I spoke to UA on the phone to confirm the minimum of 8 people (or less than that and your group splits the ultimate cost of 8 people). Thankfully we were able to wrangle up the full crew and reserved the 8pm time slot through their online web portal. It was easy to do and they only pre-charged for 2 of the 8 slots. Arrival: We had dinner by the American Tobacco campus, and now knowing where UA is located, we could have found plenty of other options a lot closer. It also looks like there will be a food hall a stone's throw away so this will be even more convenient to lots of dining options. We arrived to an assuming warehouse type building. Would could see what looked like bowling lanes of axe throwing through the window. We were immediately ushered in at the front desk and checked in. We had pre-signed the waivers before we arrived (they emailed a copy out when I confirmed my reservation), which made our check-in a breeze. Our coach, Karen (?) led us to our target. Lesson: Our coach walked us through the axe throwing rules and tried to ease our fears about the process. A few of us had recently seen the viral video of an axe bouncing back at the thrower that came out the week before, so we were a little apprehensive. We were slightly put at ease by confirming that they do not have rubber handles on their axes, which would obviously bounce upon hitting a rubber mat. How another facility thought that was a good idea was beyond me, but seeing the axes and 'bounce-ability' in action still made us antsy. 2x2, she coached us through our first throws. Some of us were naturals, others (myself included), not so much. But that's ok, hold my beer... because wait, there was a bar in house! Wine and beer available for purchase while you played. This didn't seem like the best combo in some instances but I will admit, my axe throwing improved considerably after the first couple (after which it promptly plummeted... there is a point where you should quit your drinks while you are literally ahead in your throwing...). Once we all had gone through our lessons, we went through a bracket type gaming system whittling ourselves down through to the finals. The heckling and name calling, with our new-found axe throwing confidence led us to a nail-biting final round where only one of us could reign as champion. Settling the bill: I was wondering when everyone would be charged for their games as I had only pre-paid for two entries. But about halfway through our 2.5 hour session, someone came through and settled the rest of the bill with the option to tip our coach. It was a smooth process and nice that we could each contribute without having to have one person footing the main charge. Overall: We had a fantastic time. We all talked about our next visit and 're-match' though none of us will be joining a league anytime soon. I would definitely recommend this for a unique night out with friends. you can also drop in to rent a target to practice, though I would call or check their website for those details. We used every bit of our 2.5 hours so no reason to be concerned that it wouldn't be a full event or that it's too much time to really entertain a group. Went to Urban Axes today for a team building event and had great fun. This place is situated in downtown Durham on Foster St. so parking may be a pickle depending upon when you come. The inside space is great. It offers a bar with a variety of drinks, it is spacious and cool (thrown axes can drum up a sweat). You are able to fill out the waiver prior to arriving which is very convenient. When doing so make sure you input your full name that is on your driver's license. If you do not fill out the waiver prior to coming they have several systems set up so multiple people can complete at once making the set up very efficient. Bradley was our coach and he was amazing and very patient. He provided great feedback. I started off not sticking anything and by the end of the event I ended up in second place out of 7 people!!! An amazing feat for someone that is uncoordinated . I would definitely recommend Urban Axes for a fun night out with something different to do or as a team building activity. Will be back. We recently came out with a group of 10 to celebrate my birthday, and had a fantastic time. We had a few who weren't completely sold on the idea going in, but Chloe was fantastic and quickly put everyone at ease. We had two lanes, and started the evening with hands on training to help us figure out how to throw. We followed that with two rounds of throws (5/5/5), switching lanes (30 total), with adjustments as needed to help us figure things out - with the goal of seeding us for the final tournament. Then ended the night with a single-elimination tourney with everyone on the team, 5 throws per match. So only two people throwing at a time, leaving the rest to spectate, take pictures/videos, and get beer/wine/cider at the venue bar. Really awesome concept, and eager to get back here and try again! This place has their system down pat! A friend of mine had their going-away party here this weekend and I was amazed at what an incredibly well organized event this was for a group of about 20 people. We made the reservation ahead of time and they had our party name and time in a whiteboard when we walked in. They have the safety waiver online so you can take care of it ahead of time and check in was a snap. We had our own little corner with two energetic and enthusiastic coaches (thanks Dee and Bri!) who showed us the ropes for those of us who hadn't thrown before and organized us into pairs for various types of competitions and tournaments. This was great because it kept everyone moving and everyone got equal chances at throwing. It was also super fun to have a little competition with the bracket tournament. They also take safety really seriously, which I also appreciated. Would love to bring more groups back here! Some additional deets: 1. parking in this area of Durham is pretty bad. It's only street parking which gets really tight on weekend nights. Allow yourself time to find a spot and possibly walk a bit to get there. 2. No BYOB. I've heard some axe throwing places do this, but not Urban. They have a bar outside that sells beer and cider. Honestly though, I'm fine if hundreds of people wielding axes don't have limitless access to alcohol. 3. You can bring your own food. 4. Cost for our group was $35/person. My friends and I went to Urban Axes last week and had an absolute blast. Pro tip #1, go ahead and make a reservation even if you think (and Google shows) its going to be a slow night. We went on a Thursday and initially were turned away because all the lanes were full or reserved. We were super bummed but went ahead and signed waivers just so we could watch other folks throw and have drinks, and ended up chatting with an "axpert" who was able to get us a couple of lanes and another axpert to oversee a session for us. Super grateful because we had an awesome time! Sessions were $20 per person. There's a cute little bar area with beer/wine. I always felt safe even with drinks flowing and axes flying- shout out to Matthews for being an awesome axpert. Bathrooms were clean and staff was super welcoming, even when we first came in and it was full. Def going back soon. Give it a try!! read more

We went to Urban Axes today for a team outing & IT WAS SO FUN!!! Prior to doing so, I had some hesitations just because I wasn't sure if it would actually be fun, not to mention I was a bit scared. However, this was actually incredible. We stayed for about 2.5 hours. We had amazing & motivating guidance. They were incredibly friendly and patient. We had about an hour or so of practice, and then did a round robin & competition. I highly recommend this for a fun, friendly, and competitive outing with friends, family, or colleagues! The staff was very friendly and helpful... that is all the good I have to say. This was absolutely NOT worth the money and I will not return. We started late, got paired with TWO other groups and only spent like 10 minutes actually throwing due to having to rotate out the other groups on the same area. It was 100% supervised and there was no variety to the games like other axe throwing places have. We spent majority of our time watching the others play and what we did was boring. I came here today for a company event. I've been to an axe throwing place in NYC, and felt a little disappointed with the service. Urban axes was the exact opposite. Our coaches Bradley and Kevin made this event epic. They went out of their way to make sure everyone had a great time. Went to Urban Axes for the first time on a Saturday night and had a great time! We just did a walk-in vs a group outing and had to wait a 20 minutes or so for the next lane to open, so we grabbed a drink and walked around checking everything out. Very cool place. Once our lane opened, we met out coach, Zoey, who's job it was to make sure we were safe, teach us what to do and ensure sure we had fun - she succeeded on all counts! Zoey was very knowledgeable, friendly and patient which are all crucial qualities when people are throwing axes! Being a Saturday night, like others have mentioned parking can be difficult to find in that area but it wasn't too much of a hinderance. We held our team end-of-year holiday celebration at Urban Axes -Durham, and it was a perfect experience. The coaches, Bradford and Ari, were incredibly helpful, kind, and fun! We had a taco buffet and an open tab at the bar--everyone enjoyed the amenities. The games were super fun. Everyone was able to sink axes into targets with just a little practice. I have been to this location many times all of their employees/coaches are amazing but i was throwing terrible tonight and thanks to smiley i found my throw back because she watched and caught my errors long story short I dominated the next round feeling comfortable like the axe was a part of my hand. Im not saying there aren't many great coaches because I have never had a bad experience. If you haven't been to urban axes in Durham you're missing out, its a safe and exciting night to spend your night. I make new friends every time I go and have a great till doing it, for only $20 per round. I have brought many friends and everyone has had the sane opinion. Every time I come here I have a great time. This time we came on a Monday and we walked in and started playing right away. Our coaches were carter and smiley and they were really awesome.
