The location of the 32 Custom House building (and the parking lot that was the former Daniels building) provides a sweeping view of the wall from the Weybosset bridge and river. According to the City Department of Art, Culture & Tourism, "Weybosset Street was a site where three important Indian trails met, one coming down from the north, the second up from the southeast Mount Hope region called the Wampanoag Trail, and the third up from Connecticut in the southwest called the Pequot Trail." Gaia's opening idea for the mural was to consider erasure, considering the landscape that existed before colonial settlement, asking the question of whose history gets recorded and whose doesn't. As he captures in his artist interview (viewable above), through partnership and permission seeking with the Tomaquag Museum, the work evolved into a narrative that captures a living person holding legacy and tradition, advocating for human rights and environmental justice, a people still here across time that continues today. As I volunteer at the Visitor Center, this is one of the public art pieces that most people ask about and it's part of the self guided public arts tour established by the Avenue Concept group.

It is quite pretty and flowing, suggesting flames or smoke stretching to the sky. It is quite fluid. The 13 foot tall abstract artwork was made in 2017 by artist Paul Machalaba. She studied at the University of Maryland and the Rhode Island School of Design. Bartlett Wright is currently a member of the RISD/CE faculty. This piece was generated after the sale of the building whose facade it adorns. AS220's Umberto Crenca and lawyer Mark Greenfeld encouraged Coastway Bank to do something with the empty facade. It was finished in 2013. The mural goes onto a 42-feet-tall chimney and two 16-feet-tall street lights...very interesting !

Bridges straits and…read morelights The strait between Narragansett Bay and Mount Hope Bay is only about 600 yards wide with a couple of small islands, sand bars and rocks thrown in for interest. A dangerous place to sail through at the best of times and very interesting in foggy or bad weather. So it was recognized a long time ago that some help for mariners would be nice and a small lighthouse was built here in 1855. Only about 30 feet tall and had a small 6th order Fresnel lens that was later upgraded to a 5th order lens. The light not only helped the boats get through the strait but also assisted the Bristol Ferry than ran across the treacherous area. A very useful little lighthouse that did it's job well and prevented many accidents. Then in 1927 the hulking Mount Hope Bridge was built between Bristol and Aqidneck Island so both the ferry and the lighthouse were no longer needed. The huge bridge served as a great navigational aide, as long as the boats didn't run into it or course. The lighthouse remained but since it isn't easy to see from land it was forgotten and slowly fell into a rather sorry condition. Paint was chipping off and it definitely needed so TLC. Fortunately some great new owners spent time restoring the lighthouse to it's former cute little self and now sits proudly under the huge bridge. It's private and never open to the public but good views can be seen from the water or by the landing under the bridge. This is a residential house so don't get too close and respect their privacy. The combination of the looming bridge, cool straits and lovely little lighthouse makes for a very special place indeed.

It is officially known as The Carrie Brown Memorial Fountain. The bronze central group of figures was cast at Gorham and represents the Struggle of Life. The commission was a result of a competition in 1899 in which eighteen designs were submitted. The winner was Enid Yandell, a young woman who had studied with Rodin and the successful American sculptor Fredrick MacMonnies. Yandell worked on the design in Paris. A plaster-cast of this fountain was displayed at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. It is located in Burnside Park, just across from Kennedy Plaza. Most of the time, the powerful jets of water provide a dynamic view of the park, the city and downtown. At night, lights brighten up this work of art, for many to admire.

Bristol is home to one of the oldest and longest 4th of July parades and the ferry from downtown makes special stops there on big weekends such as the 4th. The city has a skate park, small zoo, wonderful library, YMCA & a couple nice parks. There is a hospital (which I've personally never had a bad experience with except wait time and that was during covid). Lots of shopping and dining (if that's your thing). There are even a few farms in the city. The school system was good (not amazing but good). We've been happy in the city for many years.

I came out of the courthouse and there was a ticket on my car for parking less than 5' from a driveway. Seriously???? I traveled home to review my son's drivers ed book and no such violation is listed. This town is desperate for revenue! The business owners must be livid as this activity would run any outsider out of town! Don't risk this aggression by entering this town. Who knows what other unknown or unheard of violations exist here.
