SUCH a great business in our community! Urban Roots is a teaching farm that offers kids camps, adult workshops, and many events throughout the year. I've visited for a few of the Dead Plant Society classes, and have found them all to be super informative and fun! Parking is a breeze as well. Most recently I visited for their Holiday Fair, and it was such a nice set up with vendors scattered throughout the farm and in the hoop houses, coffee and crafts and photos with Santa. Definitely check them out for a great family friendly experience!

I came here for a workshop on gardening. They have a big parking lot available right across the street from the main entrance on Gould St. when I arrived, they had a check in area set up and the staff member greeted me immediately, got me checked in, and gave me directions to get to the class. The class itself was so great! It ran over the scheduled time, but other than that, it was full of great information and hands-on experiences. They had snacks and coffee available and raffle prizes. I will definitely be back for more classes and programs here! If you're a teacher, you can take select workshops for free and get professional development credits towards license renewal, which is amazing!

How lucky are we to have Urban Roots in our community? We got a chance to visit the farm during Haunted Hoops, a fantastic family friendly event where children got to let loose and explore every corner of the space with activities, snacks, and a lot of friendly faces all around. They had a station where kids concocted "potions" from dried sage and other herbs and flowers. There was a broom making station with sticks and twine and beautiful natural adornments. My kid had to choose the largest stick available and then complained when we couldn't take it home. There was a snack table with fresh fruit, popcorn and yes, some cookies. There was even a drink station where they had water on offer AND spiked cider with a suggested donation. The best part of the night was the haunted hoop house. The UR team went all out to make a kid friendly fright fest in there that included lights and sounds, creepy decor, and even some live action for added effect. Gosh. I love love love this place and can't wait for my son to go to farm camp now!

I grabbed a monthly produce box and was blown away by the variety and quality. There were so many vegetables, beautiful flowers, and even a box of crackers. Additionally, they provided some recipe cards to go with some of the produce. The staff was so friendly, safe during Covid, and accommodating as I arrived earlier than my pickup time. Plus, they are a local nonprofit in need of support.

Happy 5th Birthday to Urban Roots. What a fantastic non profit. If you do not know where they are located you might drive right by. They are literally a diamond in the rough. What used to be a illegal dump,a karaoke bar and a rundown motel is now a thriving educational facility for washoe county students. Workers with americorps and the vista program work for a year here under a grant. You can tell they love there job and what they have accomplished by there enthusiasm in there voice. We had the pleasure of talking to Kelsi for awhile and she explained the whole program. For those of you who do not know what Urban Roots is about, let me explain. There dream was to educate children where vegetables came from. Where a egg comes from, what a pig looks and feels like. Many of these kids only know vegetables in a grocery store. They have never eaten a fresh radish, pulled a carrot out of the ground and washed it , and then eat it. The little fire that is being started inside these kids is like planting a seed. It will not happen overnight but hopefully one day the child will come home with an interest to grow Carrots. Urban Roots is taking it a step further and educating the teachers at some schools how to prepare a garden and gro we vegetables. Urban Roots has a couple acres here with corn, tomatoes, flowers and seasonal vegetables. They also have a acre at mill and mccarran in the wolfpack agricultural area. They are learning how to grow hops here. The beer we drank tonight was from there hops. They give the hops to local brewers to show them not only that hops can be grown up here, but they are also tasty hops. One bene that we got by going tonight,is we received a membership and discounts to classes. In September they will have a beer making class and later this year, how to make your own soap. This is a very cool organization doing a ton of good. Check them out.

I was living at Our Place (Shelter) and they contacted me about the transitional housing program. This day completely changed my life around. I entered the Transitional Housing program with a newborn. They gave me a place to stay, assistance with basic needs (diapers, toiletries, food, furniture, etc.), and provided a furnished apartment. Throughout my stay they gave us food to be able to provide a Christmas dinner to our families, birthday baskets for our children, and countless other forms of support! They provided my daughter and I stability, which I can never thank them enough for!! While in the program I was able to attend classes such as book club, financial literacy, and support group. They even paid for therapy! I met with a financial coach every 2 weeks and she taught me how to keep a budget, pay off debt, save, and get back on my feet. I learned so many skills in the program, and these ladies are incredible! They are there to support you every step of the way. When you're in a DV situation it can feel very lonely, but they are always there for you in moments of need! Never in a million years did I think I would have been in that situation, but thank God they were there when I was! I will forever be grateful to these women for helping give my baby and me a great life. I am now in my own apartment, could afford a car, and am able to stand on my own 2 feet and be a proud mom. Thank you DVRC for all of your hard work to assisting women in DV situations. You have changed so many lives for the better!

They have a huge parking lot in the back, so that was really nice (I wouldn't suggest the front parking lot for anything. Its awkward and narrow) The front desk lady was very nice and helpful. I would definitely come back and donate more when I have more to give.

Did you know the youth homeless population is the fastest growing in the nation?…read more As a masters candidate at UNR, Lynette Eddy did, and she saw a need to get ahead of it in our community, starting the Eddy House to help, and today this is one of the most successful in the nation! I had the opportunity to work for the first version of this NPO near the beginning, when they owned a home in NW Reno that provided a safe place for 5-8 young men to live and owned a restaurant in downtown Reno as a work experience for them. I knew the organization was vital then, but it just wasn't the right format for them to deliver their maximum impact. Over the years they learned a lot, and under the leadership of some extremely astute folks, they've grown into the vital community organization I always knew them to be. Starting with the YOU, they helped homeless youth find purpose and footing, access to necessary resources and opportunities to learn academically and about themselves with the support of some great local partners. In the last year they realized their dream of opening a 24 hour drop in center for youth, something so incredibly needed by our community, and they continue to advance their mission from there. Now they need our support more than ever. If you can, consider sharing something with them so they can continue to serve the community.
