Here is my story: Very organized Very neat and clean establishment Very articulate Manager Very worthy cause Get there and volunteer for 3 hours. Wash your hands and dawn your gloves. Get assigned to a station and get to work. This journey, I sorted canned goods. We need to check on several things and they are: expiration date of product and condition of good. Each type of food in cans have different expiration dates. They are sorted by container in advance of our getting to work. They had pallets of dried goods, infant foods, paper products, and the list goes on. It is my understanding that Walmart (whose regional distribution center is a block away) brings their stale dated or expired goods to The FBNN for repacking and distribution. Nothing goes to waste. She filled out the forms explaining how many in her household, and when she came out, she had four large boxes filled to the brim with every kind of grocery you can think of including cold items like chicken, fish, and vegetables. The volunteers there look at your requirements based on the number of people in your home. One of the children is a type one diabetic and so they made sure that they were groceries that she would be able to eat. It didn't take long maybe 15 minutes from beginning to end and while I was sitting and waiting, I saw at least six or 7 people come out with giant boxes of food. I have known Jim Peckam who's the director for many years, I have donated food and supplies to them, especially during Covid. But the food bank is not just the only wonderful thing about FISH, you can go there and have a meal every night for you and your family once you register. You can go and do your laundry, take a shower and get all kinds of hygiene products. If you are someone who is trying to set up a home and has no furniture or supplies they will give you whatever you need. If you need a baby car seat, they will give it to you. FISH is amazing and the thrift shop is so reasonable. They supply goods and services to many many poor and homeless people in Carson City. If you would like to volunteer to serve dinners, work in the thrift shop or any other thing you can call them and they will set you up with a job. Carson City is very generous in terms of helping the poor and it's a good place to donate and to volunteer.

Clients are allowed to come once every 30 days to the FISH Food Bank should they need it. It is open from 9 AM to 12 noon, and then again from 1 PM to 5 PM on weekdays. You must see a worker first for an intake. The amount you get depends on your family size. But they have always been very generous. Usually you get things like tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, yogurt, canned fruits and vegetables, frozen blueberries, fresh apples, frozen strawberries, mayonnaise, peanut butter, eggs, milk, frozen meats, juice, breads, cereals, oatmeal, and a some sweets (candy, cake, pie). Today I got two large shopping carts (both top and bottom) full of food. I am not exaggerating when I say they gave me around 120 apples, 50 pork chops, 100 cans of tomato and spaghetti sauce, 15 bags of dried beans, 100 cups of frozen strawberries, 10 large bags of frozen blueberries, and about 15 bags of powdered milk. This is a lot, so much so that I had trouble fitting the frozen items into my freezer. I think they must have been trying to get rid of the food to make room? Last time I just got one shopping cart, which was still a lot. It was difficult to push the carts out to my car across the parking lot in the snow, since it wasn't plowed and we had a huge snowstorm on the weekend. It was very slushy and my sneakers got wet. The first time I went to their intake, the office worker seemed a little angry I showed her my passport card as ID instead of a driver's license, but this time, a different worker was super nice to me. I cannot thank them enough for their generosity and help. This includes all their volunteers who work their tirelessly. They also have a table full of bread and some items they are trying to get rid of each day, and clients can come every day if they want to help themselves. I have gotten things like hot dog rolls, bagels, garlic bread, sour dough bread, and bulk rolls from here, as well as canned pumpkin, individual bags of condiments, milk, juice, water, apple bars, beef jerky, Crystal Light drink mix, and ginger candy. They provide bags for you to use. They also give away large frozen turkeys each Thanksgiving and Christmas too, along with items to make a dinner, such as stuffing, cranberry sauce, broth, gravy, potatoes, milk, pie, etc. Finally, they have men's and women's showers and a laundry room there for those who need it (both free of charge). They also have a clothing pantry, an Education Room, and a van which goes each day from their to the homeless shelters a few miles away in a residential area across town. They give vouchers for gas and bus rides for those in extreme need and also are an agency to administer the NV Energy SAFE program for those who need help paying their electricity bills.

I went to this non-profit center and food bank Wednesday, April 3, 2019. This building is located…read morenext to a school. They have small parking a lot (no handicapped spaces, by the way), which was full because one car was not parked correctly and took up two spaces. I saw someone else access the place by pulling by the center using the school parking, but there is a sign it is only for school personnel during the day, so I was weary of that. Instead, I parked on the street, which was a little difficult, since there are like literally 10 feet piles of snow still in South Lake Tahoe, even though it was April! WTF? I used to live in the snow-belt of upstate New York, and by April there was only a little bit of snow. When I went in, the office was empty, as they were having a meeting in the backroom. A lower-ranking worker, who was outside bringing in the pallets of food, was nice, telling me to go to the back room, and also apologizing for blocking the entry way. He also sneaked me extra bread at the end. The other employee who came out of the meeting was super friendly, and showed me what to do. It is very informal there. There was no line. You just walk in and you can take one pre-made bag of commodities, and whatever bread and other items they have on the shelf by the kitchen. There are no forms or verifications required. Their website said they only had USDA commodities (food) beginning on the second Friday of the month until they run out, but I guess they must have changed that. In the office there were all kinds of brochures about other services offered in the community. This location also offers English language classes, parenting classes, and a clothing bank, and runs a used book store called The Bookworks, at the mall in South Lake Tahoe. I came here to volunteer, and to my surprise, there were even younger kids participating. I learned that the minimum volunteer age is 10 years old. Some students were volunteering for school service hours, while others came through different companies and organizations. We joined the second shift from 1pm-4pm. The session started shortly after 1pm with a briefing and task assignments from the group leader. All tasks were explained clearly. The leaders checked on us throughout the shift to make sure we were doing okay and to see if anyone had concerns. Halfway through the shift, we had a 15-minute break, and one of the leaders brought ice cream to celebrate a volunteer's birthday and shared it with everyone. I thought it was a meaningful way to celebrate a birthday while helping a good cause. We actually finished around 3:30pm, and our shift completed: - 5,451 lbs of food packed - 474 boxes prepared for the "No Student Goes Hungry" program supporting students from elementary school through college in Sacramento County. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating, and the facility was clean and organized. Restroom: clean, bright, and decent. Within all of this stuff, was a bunch of new and lightly used clothing. In the past I have donated clothing to my local Goodwill Express. However, I did some reflection and realized that all of the clothing that I donated was being sold for profit. Going forward, my intention was to donate to an organization that receives the donation(s) and distributes them to underprivileged individuals/families free of charge. Some research led me to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. Upon calling to verify their hours (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 10am-1pm and Wednesday, 4pm-7pm), I gathered all of the clothing and hit the road on a mission to make a difference. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a Sacramento Food Bank employee who eagerly began to load my clothing donations onto a cart. Since a lot of the clothing consisted of dress pants and dress slacks, he proceeded to inform me about a program called "Job Smart Clothing." Job Smart Clothing is a program within Sacramento Food Bank that provides career appropriate apparel for underprivileged individuals interviewing for employment or currently employed. How cool is that? I'm not a representative for Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. However, I will say that they provide an awesome service to the community, and that a little donation goes a long way (individuals who benefit from their services often leave with 15-20 pieces of clothing per visit). Before you throw away that piece of clothing that you think is out of style or doesn't quite hug your curves the way that they used to, think about donating it to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services!
